Been talking to a lot of people about the Hollow Knight Wiki gender stuff
And maybe it's "over" in one sense, that the wiki has gone back to relying on the English text of the game. Which is good. But at the same time there's been a lot of hurt feelings over how this was handled. And I agree with @grollow that an apology would be warranted
I was pretty frustrated with the way it was handled. Was following it in the wiki server. And I don't want to get down into the details, but just. As a general philosophy for approaching the wiki, to record canon information. I don't think we need to chase down every bit of information outside the game. (Paraphrased) sentiments in some of the wiki discord convos of "we need to get more info on the secret NDA document from the translators" "we need to email Team Cherry to confirm" "Team Cherry needs to release the secret document" or the most extreme sentiments (not by mods, to be clear) "Team Cherry has an obligation to resolve this and they caused it by having ambiguity in the game by having Hornet use they/them so much". I fear that's overstepping boundaries a lot to try to get other people to resolve your own perceived lore issues. None of these people involved in the game owe us anything. Especially not those who can be sued under NDA. Ambiguity is fine. Ambiguity is often in real life. Canon not telling us everything 100% is just how the game is
Now such sentiments, I can't fully remember who said them or what their position is in the wiki team, or even if some of them maybe just joined that server during all this controversy. But at least some of the sentiment was there from seasoned wiki people, and from the wiki's latest statement they're still waiting on this stuff from devs. And well, I think @devilcatdarling said it best (in a (non-wiki) mutual discord--thanks for letting me share):
"This will obviously be superseded by official publically verafiable developer confirmation." Idk bro I think specifically calling characters it/its and they/them in multiple instances within the game itself is a developer decision
On top of all this, there are still some unresolved issues. Even as I was writing this post, I find this, in an ask right before the latest wiki announcement:
As an example rule we still use, we don't assume any character goes by multiple sets of pronouns or have atypical pronouns unless they have stated as such (such as with Cardinius), as that is typically not something fiction writers take into account unless gender presentation is a major point of the plot/storyline.
I'm pretty sure Team Cherry has dealt with gender repeatedly, on purpose. Team Cherry has used "atypical pronouns" like it/its repeatedly, on purpose. Who doesn't know of the vessels being considered genderless (phrased this way because we don't hear their own thoughts) and Hornet being the gendered child? The developer's note on the Pale King possibly only gaining gender in his small bug form? Why would Team Cherry stop thinking about it in Silksong?
Opportunity to link to my old post I guess, where I did an entire analysis of pronoun use in Hollow Knight with a focus on it/its. It/its isn't just used by Cardinius. It's everywhere! It's practically the default in Hallownest.
I don't have any good words for a conclusion here, just. I'm glad the wiki is making changes but. This stuff isn't really over yet
