Have you ever heard of a Digital Asset Manager?

  Probably not. Because most small to medium businesses don't manage enough content to require a large library of assets, not to mention they can be extremely expensive just to host and distribute files. 

DAM's as they're lovingly referred to, are often used by very large companies to manage and control vast amounts of digital content and assets around the world. For most of us what we need a small, simple solution effectively move assets between parties. Cloud based sharing is good but a little too unprotected for most small businesses, not to mention they don't integrate with your bookkeeping services or billing operations. The process of content delivery is broken and disjointed between different platform services. We want to change that.

Big payments vs. the lightweights — Why simple services win.

With the proliferation of payments online the way we purchase things is no doubt evolving. In this Techcrunch Disrupt NY panel with Gumroad, Stripe and Paypal, you can almost feel the difference in attitude between the brands.

Payment behemoth Paypal speaks more about themselves and continue to focus on the sheer number of their user base to garner attention from developers, and tout new features as it attempts to become the big money platform. While smaller startups like Stripe recognizes the need for consumers to make payments in multiple forms and provide more flexibility while being more lightweight. Gumroad's CEO says it is focused on the consumer experience and we share that sentiment and that's why like Gumroad, we choose to build our app on Stripe, providing more flexibility for our users.

The entire monetary industry is changing and we strive to make life and business easier and more fluid across all mediums and devices when it comes to digital goods and payment.

A years worth of debate on whether or not to send native content.

Have clients ever asked to for native or raw files? Are they entitled to them and if so how do we stipulate the value of that work? 

Native digital content contains much of your proprietary techniques, purchased resources and expertise. Final art is not the same as original art. Be careful to define how you handoff those types of files and the compensation.

Dealing with Clients From Hell.

There are many ways to cope with difficult clients and/or companies. Most involve lots of complex legal language, scare tactics and ultimately social embarrassment. Those aren't always the best method since it tends to be driven by fear and pits both parties against one another making the completion of the process that much more difficult and painful. We recommend using a combination of solid contract verbiage that specifies the preferred method for handing off work and the right tools for doing so. Delivering software brings its own set of challenges but for digital files, an escrow service is the ideal solution.

Product development and associative thinking.

We've always been big believers in mashups. It's the creative overlap of two existing products, where the area in between becomes something even better that the originals. The sum is greater than it's parts, some might say. This is a cool example of product-in-product placement where the new service amplifies the value of both partners. It takes a certain amount of creative thinking to see these kinds of potential associations between two products and create a beneficial relationship.
