The Night of the Falling Stars
I’ve always lived in the city, from Berkeley to LA to SD to Rome, but I’ve never had the opportunity to see a shooting star before.
Recently, M and I have been taking a break in the countryside of Abruzzo, Italy.
Around August 10th-13th in Italy, it is known as San Lorenzo, the night of the falling stars.
This particular San Lorenzo of 2020 is quite special.
As Earth’s orbit crosses the stardust ejected by the comet Swift-Tuttle as is goes around the sun, one gets to witness magic on Earth.
On this particular night, M’s mother said to me, “Tonight around 11:30pm the stars will fall. Don’t forget to make a wish”
So M’s dad camped outside starting around 9pm, but he never got to see one, so he went back inside before 11:30pm.
I came outside around 11:15pm just to see if they would fall for me. I told the sky,
“Just give me a sign, let me know if I’m on the right life path. Am I living my true life’s purpose? Tell me, and I’ll keep going with all my might.”
I stood there for a few moments, with my head held high, hoping the stardust might show itself to me. As I was staring at the sky, my eyes focused on one little star that was blinking. It was fading in and out as if it was burning.
I had completely forgot about my hopes to see a shooting star, as I was mesmerized by the beauty of the night sky.
Then it happened, a ray of white light streaked for the quickest millisecond and something inside me was filled with hope. It was the most out of this world encounter I’ve seen in my life. Images, videos or stuff we see in moves is incomparable to the actual sight of a falling star.
I said thank you night sky, and I took it as a sign that I am on the right path.
The sky was talking to me, telling me more than just this, but it didn’t bless me with just one star, a few moments after, I called M outside to share the magic.
He came outside and we both held hands with our heads toward the sky. For a few moments he had doubted that I had even seen one, and I told him, if you just believe, it will come.
Just as he put his head down, I saw another. This time I had just seen a glimpse, and I felt like the stars were actually trying to tell me something.
M was starting to disbelieve the possibility of seeing anything tonight, even though he had seen many shooting stars in his life. He decided to head back inside, but just as his body turned I saw a magnificent sight and my body naturally let out the houl of a wolf.
I squeezed his arm as he turned his body halfway towards the sky. We both witnessed a huge red-orange like fire ball that left a trail of dazzling blues and majestic purples. The trail had cosmic dust flying behind it.
We both looked at each other and smiled, we kissed. We stared into each other’s eyes, closed them and I said,
But maybe life is better than out dreams? better than any movie, better than any novel.
Even the day to day things may not be exciting, but magic happens if youre seeking it.
