INTRO.
The sky rained heavy the day you were born, followed by a drought that dried up your town, so they call you cursed. Your infant years were dry, with many showing cracked lips and hollow eyes. Your father, your older brothers, many others in your town looked at you with disdain. Old superstition, really. It was only a coincidence that your birth coincided with the last heavy rain of the year. As the lake dried up, so did the tourists and your father was laid off from his job at the nearby hotel and your mother, the local seamstress and washer woman, even struggled to find either work or water.
The next heavy downpour occurred three nights after a neighbor’s little boy was born. A blessing, they insisted. The blessing to your curse. Wasn’t it always this way? You didn’t call away the storms, just as your neighbor didn’t summon the rain. But the damage had already been done and the lines were drawn. You were unlucky, and nothing you could do in your life would change the mind of those in your hometown. Your childhood isn’t easy, and your family doesn’t make it much easier. Your older brothers, twins, with mischievous glints in their eyes, enjoy tormenting the local tourists. Your neighbors assume you’re just as malicious as they, even when you spend most of your days at home babysitting your younger two siblings.
You do try to combat their perspective of you. Your head held high, you always have on a clean shirt and, once you’re old enough, you begin tailing behind your mother for work. Dreams are for your younger siblings, you have no ambition to be a movie star or a millionaire. You know this is not what life has in store for you, though there is a secret wish in your heart that you’ll save up enough money to take you away from this coastal tourist town. Somewhere where the locals don’t know your name, where you can be a tourist in your own right. But money is always tight, and as soon as you’ve saved up enough to go somewhere and be something, there’s always an emergency. Your brothers need bail money. Your father doesn’t have enough to send your younger sister to school. Your mother is too ill to keep up her work. The roof on your home needs to be replaced.
So at eighteen, you do what needs to be done, as you always have. The application process at the local gentleman’s club is quick and easy - just like their staff. You have a job before the night starts. Some of the girls welcome you with open arms to show you the ropes. Not all are friendly. But you’re not there to make friends or to feel pretty, you’re there to make ends meet, and you know that if you twinkle your eyes at the right patron, you could be set for life and kiss the whole state goodbye.
Somehow, it’s the patron that you don’t pay attention to that becomes your savior. The other girls can tell he and his associate are business men and try to draw their attention, but once they see how his suit is a size too small, they lose interest. You treat him all the same. After the show, he pulls you aside. You imagine that you’ll be asked to do more - it wouldn’t be the first time, but its not your attention he asks for, its your opinion. Which you decide to give, freely. Who is he to you, anyway? Surely he will finish whatever business has brought him to your home and he will be gone and forget that the conversation had ever occurred. But he’s there again the next night. And the night to follow, always asking for you, you, you.
You’re not surprised when he asks you to run away with him. It happens with some of the girls, from time to time. You watched as your friend came back to work two weeks later broken-hearted and without a penny to her name. You’ve learned from her experience and turn him down. But he’s more determined than most of the gentleman callers that frequent the club. He offers you a deal, give me a year to prove I can be worth your time. You think it’s an impossibility, that he’ll return home and forget your stage name, so you accept. But life at home takes a turn for the worse - your brothers start a fire at the hotel your father works at, and somehow your town wants to blame you and your mother, for not watching them closer, for letting them grow up like this, for always being cursed.
A year passes quicker than you ever imagined, and there he is again, back in the front row of your club. His suit fits better this time. He’s still not a wealthy man, but you begin to see the makings of one. The other girls try to keep his attention this time, but he only has eyes for you. When he asks you to run away with him again, your answer is already on your lips. You get married, you learn his language, and then another on top of that. Somehow, you’re happy. This isn’t the life you ever imagined for yourself, but it’s a life well fought for and earned.
When you lose your best friend, it's unimaginable. You watch as your husband loses the man he nearly considered his brother shortly after. And then you lose your husband, too. You begin to think those old grannies in your hometown were right - maybe you are cursed. You’ve lost too much as it is - your brothers, your friends, your connections, your husband. But you won’t lose anything else, and to that you are determined. You emerge from years of grief with only one thought in mind: you will protect what you have left, and you will do so by any means necessary.

INTRO.
It’s the summer of 1969 and your mother does not want to be your mother. You’re born into the world with your fists curled and a screaming wail, ready for a fight before there even is one. The doctors hand you to your father first, not your mother. Never your mother. Her first weeks at home are difficult. You won’t stop crying, but your cries don’t rouse her from her bedroom. The neighbors complain, and the landlord threatens to call CPS. Before you are six months old, your mother is gone. It is the best thing she could have done for you. It’s also the worst.
What you and your father have are special. You’re his little guy, and you quickly have become the center of his whole world. He never expected to become a father, and parenthood surprisingly comes easy for him, mostly in those early years. He colors chalk with you, he lets you stay up late watching scary movies, he lets you skip school. You grow out of your shoes and pants and he shows you how to stuff things in your pockets from the store. In school, your teachers ask you what your parents do for a living. Other students say doctor or lawyer, receptionist, and pharmacist. You find you don’t know how to answer. Your Father is around, more often than he’s not, but sometimes he comes home cut up and bloodied. Sometimes he gets you to stitch him up. Sometimes his blood gets on your hands.
He’s taught you not to talk about it. You know better than to not listen to him.
Then you’re twelve and there’s a knock at the door. You think it’s the pizza you ordered. But then the door shoves open and armed guards push past you, restraining you. They clear your bedroom first, and then your fathers. Red and blue lights blink from behind your living room curtains. Your father is pulled out in handcuffs. Those left behind have to figure out what to do with you next. The leftovers, the aftermath. You’ve done nothing wrong - you’re only twelve, after all, but they put you in the back of a car all the same and you spend the night with a detective until they can find what to do with you.
Your teen years are dark and troubled. The state forces you to see a counselor and meet with a social worker. You slip out on both. You don’t consider yourself troubled - your father never did, and your heart aches for the messy comfort that he once provided. It’s not hard, you grab your foster parent’s set of keys when they aren’t looking. And you drive, long and hard across state lines. Someone at a gas station rats you out when you stop for fuel. Within an hour, you’re in the back seat of a car again, though this time with handcuffs digging into your skin. Just like your father.
Because of your age, your history, and mostly your social worker, your sentence isn’t so bad. Troubled. They keep throwing that word around. Are you troubled? You have a difficult past and a hard upbringing. You’ve experienced a much longer life than most at only the age of sixteen. They call you troubled and you still roll your eyes. Lively, you prefer it called instead. Vivacious. Carefree.
The detention center does not teach you much. Upon your release, they call you rehabilitated, but you do not agree with the word either. You did not need to be rehabilitated, you needed to reach eighteen, to get the freedom every other adult has in the world. And once you do, you don’t look back. You never stop. Life has too much to offer you. New concerts, new movies, new songs, new clothes, new jobs, new people. Everywhere you turn offers a new experience. Everyone you meet has a new story to tell. Everything you do is another page in your own novel. And you just want more. Troubled? No, you were never troubled. You just love feeling of being alive.
