Alice Isnât Dead is a new serial fiction podcast from the team behind Welcome to Night Vale.
A truck driver searches across America for the wife she had long assumed was dead. In the course of her search, she will encounter not-quite-human serial murderers, towns literally lost in time, and a conspiracy that goes way beyond one missing woman.

part one, chapter two: Â alice
âI thought you were dead. I really did.â
âI couldnât think â I really couldnât â I couldnât think of another reason you would vanish like that.â
âJust gone. Just not you next to me in the mornings or coughing before bed. The halo of warmth you made in the air around you, just air now.â
âI mourned you, ___. Iâve never loved anyone so hard. From my goddamn gut.â
âSo screw you for that. I mean, really.â
âI donât think the landscape is that bad, really. JustâŠanythingâs a letdown from the mountains.â
âI donât think the world passes through here. I donât think the world has been to this place in a long time.â
âI went to groups. I sat in circles and talked about you.â
âThatâs what we do now, right? As a civilization, we sit in a circle and we describe the shape of the monster that is devouring us. We hope, like a talisman, that our description will provide some shelter against it.â
âIt wonât, though. We are helpless.â
âThe circle was fine. It waâ It was good, actually. I talked about you, how you were always a little strange, but ___, I never thoughtâŠ.I never thought.â
âSomewhere in the heart of somewhere else.â
âAnd there you were. Right among them. Looking like you knew exactly what was going on, looking like nothing was a surprise to you.â
âNothing ever was a surprise to you, was it? You always knew everything.â
âSo, my ___ wasnât dead. Thatâs good to know. Thatâs new information.â
âHoping to ward off the monster by describing the shape of it.â
âI quit that job. Oh, you would have been so proud of me!â
âItâs all so clean now. SoâŠexpected. Every relationship, no matter how long, no matter the history, is expected to be temporary. Separation is never a surprise.â
âThere are different types of desert, you know. There is desert that is something â itâs mesas or itâs sand, it has contours and its own spatial language â and then thereâs desert that justâŠisnât.â
âFlatlands is the absence of everything else. I suppose that this, too, has its own spatial language, butâŠboy, am I glad to see trees again.â
âAre you doing this? ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?â
âIâm going. Iâm driving. I donât know what to do! I donât know what!â
âI thought you were dead.â [Sigh] âMaybe you are. Maybe Iâm chasing a ghost.â
âYour gift to me, I suppose?â
âI donât know what this meant. I only know that itâs meaning does not include me. I am not necessary to it.â
âThere are a lot of different types of freedom.â
âWe talk about freedom the same way we talk about art, like it was a statement of quality rather than a description.â
â'Artâ doesnât mean good or bad. Art just means art. It can be terrible and still be art.â
âFreedom can be good or bad, too. There can be terrible freedom.â
âYou freed me, and I didnât ask you to. I didnât want you to.â
âI am more free now than I have ever been, and I am spiraling.â
âI want our lines to cross, even one more time.â
âYou owe me an explanation, and I am going to see that you make good on that. Iâm going to hear whatever story youâve got to tell, and Iâm going to hear it from you direct.â
âYou may think youâre free, but youâre not. You are not free of me.â
