On Cas' birthday Dean wakes him up with a kiss. Cas kisses back, eyes still closed, reaches out to pull Dean close. As his hands roam Dean's body, first he hears some rustling, then feels something plasticy over Dean's shoulder, so he pulls away asking "What's this?"
He looks so adorable with sleep in his eyes and hair all messy that Dean has to fight the urge to just pull him into another kiss and just keep kissing him into late afternoon but he collects himself, clears his throat and says, "It's your birthday gift". Cas looks confused for a moment, so he adds, "Come on, peel it off".
Cas does, revealing a red tattoo of a handprint. Cas' handprint. Right where the brand had been. He cannot stop looking at it. The skin around the ink still looks swollen. Cas opens his palm, hovering just above it, careful not to touch the fresh wound.
The handprint hadn't been planned, it had just happened. Turns out being dragged from hell by a celestial wavelength could do that to a human body. Still, Cas had been sad to see it heal and disapper over time. But now, Dean choosing to get it tattoed, choosing to get permanently branded, where Cas touched him for the first time-
He's speechless, his gaze darting berween Dean's shoulder and his face.
"Dean, I-" he starts to speak but stops because he doesn't know what to say. How to express the enormity of what he's feeling with something so small and trivial as words. So instead he sneaks his hand up Dean's neck, pulls at the hair at his nape, kisses him with everything he's got, wirh everyrhing he feels for this man.
"So, you like it then?" Dean asks when they pull away, still close enough to breath each other's beath.
"I love you," Cas tells him then, forehead pressed against Dean's.
And really, that's not the answer to Dean's question but it also the answer to all of his questions - past, present and future.
"Happy birthday, Cas," Dean tells him and doesn't hold back the fondness in his voice.
