The lack of an immediate rejection is reassuring on some level. it registers relief and a calm in his systems he found himself content with. Though physical scans still showed high levels of what looked like anxious behaviors in Lex’s body. Temperature, heart rate.. Stammering of words.
He was not- What is the phrase…?- Out of the woods?
There was almost a faint twitching at the corner of his mouth as Lex brought that old gift into view. Still worn on that same wrist just like the last time they’d parted. Lex never gave him up… What else could that mean? The teleportation worked for nothing else but to see him. To be with him. To unite them no matter how much distance and stars were between them…
But it seems that may not have been enough to make the other want to see him all that time.
“I suppose you are right.. A failure on both of our parts.” Brainiac concurred, softly. Very aware of where they were and that someone could very well be leaning up against the door, eavesdropping on their conversation. Of course anyone foolish enough would sorely regret it, one way or another.
Of course, all the while during this he continued to glance down at Lex’s clearly injured hand. Had he broken it? Well.. That would certainly teach him to not lash out physically..Without thinking to ask for permission he reached out and grasped Lex’s delicate human hand in his, massaging his thumbs over the bruised knuckles in an attempt to ease the aching. Second nature even after years apart.
“Lex Luthor..” He began with a cool levelness in his tone, “To forget you were a part of my life is to forget my own name… And that is far more sentimental than I intended but here we are… My point being that my absence was never due to a lack of interest. Merely a lack of awareness…And for that, I take ownership.”
It had been quite awhile since he had heard Brainiac’s voice at all, let alone this soft. It was a bit jarring, the reminder that he could sound like that. It had been far too long, and as much as he wished it was, Lex’s memory was not perfect. He was faulty in the way that all humans were, memory being a sometimes sharp, but often faded thing. The sound of his voice had faded. Now it was back.
He would try to commit it to a memory that wouldn’t be as subject to degradation over time. Hopefully, this one.
Of course, he knew why Brainiac was lowering his voice, and while Lex doubted that anyone else was nearby, it was possible. It wouldn’t be difficult to deal with, if it was (with the exception of if the alien flew by, like he had originally thought), so it didn’t overly bother him. He appreciated that Brainiac did, though.
There were more important things for Lex to think about right now, though.
His hand still hurt a bit, although the pain was starting to dull. It rose up a bit again at the touch, but it was soothing at the same time. Nice. His fingers curled.
“You certainly know how to make a dramatic return,” Lex found himself smiling, pleased and calm. Even if he had been angered, such words would almost certainly had diffused his feelings. “I understand. If anyone could understand you having a lack of awareness, especially for a span of time that is brief from your perspective, it’s me.”
“And, it’s alright. Lack of awareness on one hand, pride on the other--these are obstacles we can overcome.” They had overcome far worse, after all. Hatred. Difference. Hatred, again (both times on Lex’s count, and he was very aware of his past flaws).
“I missed you,” he said simply, “I thought of you every day, so much so that I almost did defeat my pride, a few times. I should have, but I failed in that regard--and I am at fault for that. But, I am delighted to see you again.”
We reap what we sow, Luthor.

Brainiac was unprepared for the strike and took it with surprise. His white eyes shuttered as he felt no pain, but instead a mild vibration through the sturdy metal plating. Lex could not have expected that to harm him.. But perhaps that was not the intention..
“I may deserve that…” Brainiac confessed flatly, glancing quickly down at the red, bruising knuckles on Lex’s hand….But he did wish Lex wouldn’t harm himself to make a point..
There was so much he wanted to say but the reality of the situation could be summed up in few words. The explanation was standard, no great event kept him away. No cosmic emergency that needed his tending… There was no world shattering thing that pulled him away and he was never damaged in the time he was away… Which perhaps made this all the more irresponsible and cruel. To leave for so long for no good reason…
“I was exactly where you last saw me.” He stated calmly, the familiar void in his voice that kept all emotion neatly below the surface, “The ruins of Krypton. Continuing my restoration project. I never left that sector and continued my work for all of that time.”
“What I did not anticipate, however-” He continued, “Was how differently time moved so far away from Earth. And how unaware of time I have become in my current state…”
He looked away, glancing out the window at the city. It looked nearly the same as it once did. There were a few new sky scrapers being built in the distance. Some of the old ones clearly had been repaired. Likely from some super-villain making a mess of the place. Life on Earth moved so fast for a being who would never age. And human lives were so short. Too short to lose two years..
“I became absorbed in my work..I had anticipated returning sooner but when I paused, i realized how much time here had truly passed… I suppose part of me assumed that you would attempt to contact me and that would ground me in reality while I worked… But you never did.”
And he asked himself why the entire trip back to Earth… It was clear now that he’d offended the man. Left him without explanation and returned expecting to be invited back into his life. But why didn’t Lex reach out sooner? Why let two years pass like this and not even try and discover why? The Lex he knew was more tenacious than that… But perhaps Brainiac was looking to displace his own blame.
“I returned to earth to find two years had passed…” He turned back to Lex and just looked at him. Looking at every line on his face, every curve of his features. The wrinkles at the corners of his eyes.. He’d lost two years with Lex that he would never be able to recover. And something in him agonized at the thought.
“No physical action, or material gift will return the time I have stolen… All I can offer is an apology…”
Lex shook his hand again, ignoring the stinging, moving it to end the paradox that was painful numbness. The pain was quickly fading, although it would be sore for a bit after this. (This was not the first time Lex had futilely punched someone or something.)
He didn’t miss Brainiac’s lingering look on his hand, though. Relief, his mind whispered traitorously. Forgiveness was surely incoming, it always was--he had forgiven so much to make this work in the first place, why throw it away now?--but that didn’t mean that he was going to make it easy. Or immediate.
Because the other emotions still churned, rushing in his mind. It was quite frustrating, difficult to center himself--he felt destabilized. But, he was justified in feeling such. It was still bothersome though, after having maintained control of himself and his thoughts for so long, to lose it so easily. Although, for Lex, this lack of control simply resulted in this cacophony of emotion, slowing and muddling his thoughts. It could be worse. But, it was still irritating.
At least Brainiac took the punch well (emotionally, not physically, obviously a simple punch would be nothing to him). That itself got at least half of these feelings under control. It had let Lex vent, and venting with words would have likely just made this situation...far worse than it had to be. Amusingly enough, punching was better than talking, just in this situation.
He...was not actually surprised at all by Brainiac’s justification. Or, lack of one, rather. Lex had had two years to think about all the possible reasons for the absence, not that he was constantly thinking about it, he did have his own life and goals, but--well. Two years and sixteen days was a long time to think.
One of the easiest ones to consider, really, was Brainiac getting lost in his work. He never did anything small, and Lex himself would get lost in his work and often ignore his body’s needs. But, his body eventually informed him of those needs and he couldn’t run from them forever. Of course, he could imagine himself without them, without those limitations, and it was so easy to imagine himself losing days, weeks. Years.
Still, the anger of being forgotten nagged at him, and he could burst, could snarl about how insignificant he must be, to have been forgotten like that. That he shouldn’t have to be the one to remind the other that he existed. That he spent every day of his life on a single planet, easy to find, often in the same few buildings--
But, the anger wasn’t worth it. Fighting and yelling wasn’t worth it, not when he was finally back. Not when Lex felt like they had done enough of that.
Raising a hand to rub at his forehead, Lex sighed, “Don’t...you don’t have to apologize. Obviously both of us did nothing about it, even though both of us could have.” He tapped idly at the wristwatch he wore on his left hand (the one he did not punch with--he did not wish to injure his dominant hand--not even to make a point).
“I...” Ugh, this was. Undesirable. Some prep time before this reappearance would have been appreciated. A text at least. “My pride was an obstacle,” he admitted, “If you weren’t thinking of me, I wasn’t going to crack first. Not that that is an accusation, because it isn’t intended to be such, but it is simply how I thought.”
((Some doodles I did tonight of an old ship I’m amazed I can still write for. Bless you @destinedforgodhood

“Now this is a much more reasonable statement.”
i-amkrypton:
The expression on Lex Luthor’s face was unreadable. He may now have a greater grasp on emotions but Brainiac was far from a mind reader. He couldn’t help but wonder what the other must be thinking now. What thoughts about the machine must be going through that brilliant mind at finally seeing him. For the first time in a very long time.
He remained outside for only a moment after he was invited in, processing all variables he could gather. Body Language, heart rate, heat levels… Anything that might guide him in a safe direction with this situation he knew was going to be… Awkward.
Before Lex’s eyes the alien intelligence dissolves into light and vanishes and a moment later the room goes warm as he appears in the office. Despite the spacious room, the warmth of his body rebuilding itself can be felt from wall to wall. Not enough to make a human sweat, but enough to notice a distinct change.
“I did not want to assume…” He began, fixing his gaze on Luthor.. Who was not terribly far from himself but a polite distance.
“It has been a while.. Still maintaining odd hours I see.” Brainiac attempted levity though he could sense it would not do him any favors.
“….. I can explain.”
Lex stood up from his chair as the robot disappeared before his eyes. Expecting it, he turned, the heat was familiar, he remembered the teleporting before, on many occasions he had seen this. Years ago. He watched Brainiac appear, suddenly in his presence, in his space, there after so long--
Several emotions coiled in his mind, and usually he was so much neater with these things, so much more compartmentalized. But, it had been two years and sixteen days, and he didn’t think that there was any human on the planet who wouldn’t be affected by such a wait. A wait, a pause, a time in which he was left wondering if he was insignificant to a god. If he had bored him. And, if he had bored him, would he ever again be deemed worthwhile? There was anger, bitterness and resentment at being left for so long. There was love, bright and enthralling, overpowering the test of time that had been waiting. Desperation, a need for validation, loneliness, hopelessness, longing.
Ugh, it was unpleasant. Unbidden thoughts, rushing to the surface, the years of doubting and wondering, of hesitance and immobility. The lack of progress in himself concerning these feelings was staggering--that they all rushed back, so uncertain, so jumbled and unorganized at the mere sight of him--
Lex calmly closed the distance between them--
and punched Brainiac.
The impact clanged dully, a harsh sound, but Lex didn’t really hear it over the pain blossoming up his arm. His fingers were crushed together, painful and smarting, and he suppressed the flinch as he pulled his hand back to his side.
He now directed his attention up to Brainiac’s eyes, to that wonderful face he hadn’t seen in far too long. “Where were you?” Lex snapped, one emotion finally rising to the top, overpowering the rest. It was the predictable one, he should have realized this was how he felt. Anger. Familiar, comfortable, and burning bright in the pit of his stomach.
It wasn’t the kind of anger that would last, though, already he could feel relief dousing the flame, bringing him down. The intensity of his anger left his eyes, zapped now that it had been expressed.
He sighed, gingerly flexing the fingers of his now-slightly-injured hand. Relief.
He was so relieved.
What kind of hair gel do you use?
“I’ve never heard that one before. How creative.”

i-amkrypton:
The hand pulled away from the glass the moment Lex turned around. Struck with confusion, Brainiac couldn’t fathom why the man was saying such things to him. Why does he think the AI will be ‘on his ass’ about anything? When was he ever?
Hm.
Glancing back over his shoulder and at the sky above to make sure there was no one else occupying the space outside the window Brainiac realized his error. The city behind him was bright and alive with light. And it was all behind and below him… From where Lex sat he must look like a shadow…. A shadow wearing a cape-
Ah. He realized what was happening a moment after. Were he the type to say ‘oops’ now would have been an appropriate time.
He set his gaze back on the pristine office window and silently shook his head. No doubt those windows were sound proofed so talking would be a needless waste of energy. Instead he shuttered his eyes and began to emit small amounts of glowing light from behind the glassy white. Just enough to illuminate him as his hand reached for the glass to tap again. This time it was not just a silhouette. Along the edges of his slender hand, the faintest bit of soft green could be spotted. Kal-El was many things but green was not one of them.
The alien was still, not responding, but of course he wasn’t, he wouldn’t say anything, he would just float there all smug and--oh. Oh.
Lex had made a mistake. That was not common.
For a half-second, the glow confused him. But that was only because he had been so long--his mind counting the days and keeping track even when he avoided thinking about it. Then, he knew exactly who it was he was looking at. Someone he hadn’t seen in 2 years and 16 days. Someone who had been dear to him (and still was, despite any consideration of moving on).
His rage vanished in an instant, snuffed out like a candle, leaving him with an emptiness. There was a dim sense of shock and, slightly, of wonder, but the feelings felt muted, far off in the unexpectedness of this situation. After all this time, he hadn’t been sure he would ever see Brainiac again. He had assumed he wouldn’t, it was safer to assume not, rather than to hope for otherwise.
Hope was hardly Lex’s domain.
“Brainiac,” he said, voice low, although he knew that he would be heard regardless of his volume. “I don’t believe you’ve ever bothered to knock before. Get in here.”
[ image: a loose comic of toyman and lex luthor.
first panel is lex luthor, sitting in his office with his hands under his chin. he turns to face toyman, who is fiddling with his sleeves, rolling them up so his arms are shown. lex asks, “did you finally get over yourself-”
and in the next panel, he’s interrupted by toyman punching him in the face. lex looks vaguely annoyed by this. ]
The Joker just loves to annoy Luthor by getting all up close and personal with him. Luthor’s stoic expression while enduring it is the best thing, I swear. joker: GIFs | animated | tags
