"Oh yeah, we have an outdoor Corgi, he just gets so bored cooped up inside all day. He knows to stay off the road. Don't worry, he's way too smart for coyotes and the neighbor's know to look out when they drive past."
"Us? Oh, of *course* our Dachshund sleeps inside- we just let him out in the morning and make sure he comes back for dinner. He just does his own thing, no worries."
"Um, you know it's not humane to keep a chihuahua confined to an apartment? They're dogs, they're natural predators. They need to experience hunting behaviors or they get depressed. No we don't leash ours, he absolutely hates it, we just let him come and go whenever."
Yall get how fucking stupid that sounds, right? So stop letting your goddamn cats get eaten and attacked and infected and hit by cars
A toddler would probably love full unattended access to the neighborhood too, but we don't do that either, do we
It's 2026, "keep your damn pet in a house or in your view" should not be controversial
I had to go on a hunt for this but it was worth it. 100% agree
I believe this is the case being talked about by Silas P Silas:
As in almost all cases, this isn't a case of a computer DELIBERATELY being made to discriminate, it's a case of a computer RECKLESSLY being made to discriminate. Which isn't even a tiny bit better, but is an important distinction for when we talk about the dangers of this kind of thing.
AI is trained off of available data. Available data is about the real world, where racism and sexism and all that shit exists. Unless you carefully put effort into making sure that bigotry is EXCLUDED from the training, it will by default be included.
We've known this forever. There is no excuse. They don't bother, or they do a shitty job at it, because they want to make more money and carefully curating your own custom dataset without racism in it is not only extremely difficult, but very expensive.
The "elder millennial" "xennial" age group had such an interesting relationship to tech growing up. We just kept rolling w/ the changes that have been nonstop, but our earliest days were pre digitial.
Like I remember when the only way friends could contact me was the old shared house phone...probably the last generation in mainstream US life to say that. I remember the internet arriving and being INFINITELY more competent at using it than adults and fucking around on AIM and chat rooms. I remember pagers and adults having them but wasn't old enough for one until they were already obsolete.
I was taught how to formally handwrite a letter and address the envelope. Followed by mandatory keyboard typing classes and "computers" starting as a "specials" in elementary school.
The first cases of cyberbullying started in my generation. Adults had no idea how to address it.
We were at the front end of cell phones and texting becoming the norm, by my late in my HS/early college times. I remember owning totally separate pieces of tech for digital photography, playing music, watching video, playing video games, GPS/navigation, scientific calculator, an alarm clock, flashlight, etc. many replaced by smartphones. And I remember being an early smartphone adopter in my late 20s.
I remember the screeching hell of dial up and how fucking pumped we were when much better DSL/cable internet started. I remember sometimes having to print out papers for college to some professors and hand them in person and for others, having to submit them by email or online uploads instead. In my early career, I remember having to fax paperwork as much as I emailed it.
My home has physical media in VHS, DVD, and Blue ray formats. I remember when VHS was officially phased out as the standard format.
I had more cellphones with gimmicks across the years than I could count. The old Nokia brick. The tiny phone SNL mocked. The sidekick full keyboard that flipped out. The Blackberry that was my first time getting email on the go. The original Droid. Early iphones.
I'm Mark Zuckerberg's age...aka of the generation of women he was ranking hotness of in this pre-Facebook days and the target group he rolled out The Facebook for...I was on it when you had to be at an invited college.
Idk why I'm writing this. it's just interesting to me. I think part of why my generation is so adaptable to new tech is that we've always had to be...unlike my niece who is starting high school and has literally ONLY ever known tech on a phone or tablet. But also unlike my 87 aunt who didn't interact with tech much until she was in her 40s and older.
A woman not shaving or wearing a dress or wearing makeup or wearing femme clothes or having styled or long hair or caring how she looks or using a masc name or whatever else is actually a neutral thing and not a sign of her being depressed or giving up or being sad or whatever
Extremely predictable, tbh, that this post, made my a trans woman about my experiences as a woman, about my relationship with gender, about how I get pressure to perform to a more feminized gender presentation, mostly from other women, is being reblogged as #radblr because I didn't actually mention being trans, since it wasn't relevant. I'm thirty or forty years old and I have very, very little interest in arguing with anyone on tumblr anymore, but if you're out there relating to this post, and also performatively yelling that trans women are men, or talking about how "you people don't really view yourself as women" or whatever, then all I can say is perhaps pause a moment to consider that our experiences are not all that different, and maybe choose empathy rather than whatever reactive hate you have been choosing.
abortion on demand without question apology or moralization
i literally love abortion. thank god for abortion 🩷
If someone was letting their kids starve, they educationally neglected them, they denied them access to health care, left them out in the elements lacking shelter, etc., reasonable people would object.
And it would all be the more horrifying if we learned those parents not only have adequate resources to easily feed, educate, house, and provide healthcare, but they hoarded all those resources and didn't use them for what their kids need, reasonable people would object.
If they also unnecessarily exposed their kids to diseases, locked some of them up in dungeons, and outright killed others, reasonable people would be horrified.
If those clearly evil and corrupt parent/guardians were confronted with objections but they refused to address them and instead constantly talked about things like how much they need the bible to be read in schools, that they love guns, are afraid of hormones, or that they believe that fetuses are sacred, or that kids shouldn't read certain books, or that we should be bounty hunting women who have certain procedures done...most reasonable people would idk...melt down with rage...?
Anyway, this is about the Texas government.
Just your annual heads up, Northern Ontario is actively on fire with little resources from the provincial government to combat them. Over 144 fires on record, you've seen the fire from Armstrong and another from Collins, but several First Nations along the corridor have lost their homes and have been displaced. Please keep them in mind this season as the fires have devastated their homes and displaced them, some were evacuated to Niagara where they face indiscriminate racism.

Both the Nokiiwin Tribal Council at 384 Fort William Road and the Superior Inn at 555 West Arthur Street in Thunder Bay are accepting donations for evacuees. They've posted that they're in dire need of baby and toddler supplies (especially diapers and formula) and cat and dog food and supplies. (X)
Anishinabek Nation is also accepting donations in solidarity w the Namaygoosisagagun First Nation

Today I learned that the murderous US christo fascist white nationalist government has decided that not only should it be illegal for trans people to access the hormones they need… They are now attempting to force testosterone on cis men in the military
Sorry suckers...hormones are only for really dudey dudes who put their whole backs into the killing efforts.
I remember back when the news only used to horrify me with something uniquely newly terrible like… weekly? It’s a couple times a day now. Yay.
Wait... Isn't that an onion story?
I think they just posted about the us military testing 30+ year old military personnel.
Did the most famous satire outlet accidentally post a true story?
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced new testosterone screenings for troops 30 and older. Screening is automatic, but treatment is volun

it's kind of crazy climate change has occurred at such a remarkable pace that I and everyone else around my age can remember a completely different climate in our childhoods. I truly watched winter gradually disappear in my life.
"You're too young to remember this, but there used to be so many insects outside that you would have to clean them off the windshield after a long car ride" is the kind of sentence that would have been in a cheesy scifi short story earlier in my life, perhaps submitted to a literary magazine and accepted to show support for its environmentalist message - now it's something I've said in earnest.
Controversial take but I think we more often need to accept that sometimes it’s not personal, but that a person still doesn’t fuck with us. They don’t want a relationship with us, they don’t wanna be our friend. We’re not their type for whatever reason. They don’t hate us but they aren’t interested in building something with us in any capacity. It’s not that they have a lot going on, it’s not that they can’t receive love, it’s not what a lot of people concoct just not to deal with the sting of rejection. Sometimes we’re just not somebody’s type. And that’s okay and we don’t have to curl up in fetal position in a corner about it. We will not be the type of every person we encounter and that is natural and nothing to lose sleep over
What's that quote...something something why do you expect everyone to like you, you don't like everyone
Not being someone's flavor is a good thing. If everyone found me "nice" or whatever, I'd not be me. I'd prefer to repel some people, ya know?
One of the world’s most influential intellectuals offers an intimate look at how her personal life informed her public, political journey to
I've just finished listening to the audiobook memoir of Dr. Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw the mother of the terms Intersectionality and Critical Race Theory (among SO MANY OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS to US culture.)
I knew how influential she is to feminism and anti-racism, but I didn't really KNOW know just HOW influential. Her intellectual contributions, insightful analysis, sociopolitical commentary, writing, and punditry was relevant to and at the heart of so many of the most important events where race and gender interacted, such as Anita Hill's role in the confirmation of Clarence Thomas, the OJ Simpson trial, the murder of Trayvon Martin, and on and on and on.
I can't recommend it enough. Her story is engaging and what she shares that offers insights into her personal experience of it all is fascinating. You get to learn exactly what the moment was like when she created intersectionality as a legal theory. She walks us through what it was like being a child involved in the civil rights movement of her hometown in Canton, OH, right through the hideous 2026 "anti-woke" moment and the systematic attack against the careers and dignity of black women today. Her story is both personal and political and she weaves it all together so well.
I highly recommend this listen or read...most of all, if you, like me are one of those third wave white feminists who for a while called yourself "an intersectional feminist" (likely in the 2010s) then I'd like to underscore: We owe Dr. Crenshaw not only our attention but also PAYMENT. Buy her book or borrow it from your local library to ensure that she gets the funds due to her for her contributions, and you continue to learn. And you DO NOT need to support Amazon in the process. I was pumped that my library queue of holds for both the e-book and audiobooks were so high that additional copies were purchased.
