Actually, I’m prouder right now of the one on the left, because it was never meant to look finished. It’s a thirty-minute worksheet where I worked out problems for a finished piece — like an outline for a book. You’d never compare a book to the outline and say the book was better; they do different things.

So the thing on the left was always meant to be a quick value study, and the one on the right is a face with four hours in it, the value problems already solved in all the quick pieces before it. 

I’m prouder of the one on the left because I knew before I got into this that I could create a photo realistic rendering with colored pencils,* but I wanted to learn how to create incredible renderings of things that didn’t exist, lighting situations I had never seen, and, in this case, a young woman I’d never seen in a dramatic lighting situation — and to do that, you have to do a lot of pre-work. I knew this lesson for writing but had never worked this hard on my art, so I’m proud of that pre-work because I’m glad I’m learning new tools
