Samuel took the hint almost immediately, his hand reaching over to give the other’s shoulder a small squeeze. It wasn’t exactly uncommon for Sam to take things too far, and evidently enough he had done just that with Connor. An apologetic smile whisked its way onto his features before it turned into a grin.
Until food was mentioned, Sam wasn’t at all aware of how hungry he really was. A load grumble from his stomach quickly prompted a sheepish laugh and a shrug. It served as a not so subtle reminder that, whilst he had gotten on Connor’s back about his unhealthy behaviour, he had just pulled the same stunt today. Long hours at work often meant having little time for eating. Thinking over Connor’s proposition, Samuel nodded. He supposed it wouldn’t hurt to eat unhealthily for one night– at least it shouldn’t.
“Sure.” Samuel briefly turned his attention back to the bar as he finished off his drink, signalling for the bartender to get him another beer. “I mean if you don’t order them, then I will.”
▌ ▲▐ ───── Glad for the change in subject matter, Connor flashed a crooked half-smile towards Samuel before getting to his feet. He headed over to the bar to place his order, taking a moment to start a bit of polite conversation with the bartender there. She was a charming thing, a little too classy to be working at a bad in the middle of the inner city. A college girl just trying to get by. Connor could relate; he had been there once before, doing odd jobs to survive, applying for scholarships and getting very little sleep. Simpler times, or so he reminisced with a sense of IRONY.
The young lady did poke a bit of fun as he ordered a sparkling water along with the onion rings, which got Connor smiling that goofy smile of his in response. He gave her a wink as she handed over the glass, and he was surprised to see her blush a bit. The two laughed and the bartender assured him his food would be right out. The detective nodded in thanks and headed back to his table, scooting in next to Samuel again.
“So, apparently they have some kind of chipotle spice you can add into the onion rings,” he mentioned nonchalantly and sipped his drink with a small grin. Back to being energetic - Connors sour moods never lasted, gratefully. And just like a big kid he could get excited over the most inane of things. “I hope you like spicy food.”
Noting Connor's change in mood, Sam was glad he was back to being as energetic and childish as usual. It brought a little life back into the conversation. There was a beat before, just like earlier, Sam gave a little shrug in response. "Mhm. Love it." Not something the detective would eat regularly, but he definitely did enjoy the occasional spicy meal. "Never tried chipotle spice with onion rings before though. Sounds like it'll be pretty good."
There was a moment of silence from Sam before he brought up what had just happened at the bar, both curious about it and maybe a little jealous. His friend seemed happy enough about the bartender (and Sam was more than glad to see him smiling and laughing like that), so he might as well pry whatever information he can get out of him. "So, I saw you were getting a little too friendly with that bartender over there." The light teasing in his voice did nothing to distract from the slightly jealous tone and the sight of a small pout that managed to sneak onto his lips, which he tried his hardest to pass off as a lopsided grin. "You get her number or did you just spend all that time talking and flirting with her for nothing?"
