Hardest part of writing is accepting that some people will not fucking get it & you just have to like cope with that because over-explaining it just makes it worse
I will not over-explain my art to the stupidest people on earth. I'm writing for people who know what I'm talking about. Mantra that will save you. David Lynch was right

Ms. Tippett: What do you mean? What is the assignment? 10 observations of their actual world?
Ms. Howe: Just tell me what you saw this morning like in two lines. I saw a water glass on a brown tablecloth, and the light came through it in three places. No metaphor. And to resist metaphor is very difficult because you have to actually endure the thing itself, which hurts us for some reason.
Ms. Tippett: It does.

GIRLS NIGHT GIRLS NIGHT GIRLS NIGHT
in an au where there's no kira and lawlight really do just meet in college light takes L home for dinner and is like ok we both know i have endless patience with what a weird freak you are due to how much of saint i am as we both know. but please try not to be too weird of a freak when you meet my parents. L's like yes okay whatever and then spends the entire dinner with his back really overexaggeratedly straight and making excessively normal small talk about american baseball and the stock market and light's family is bemusedly enchanted but light correctly interprets this as an act of passive aggression and a declaration of war and breaks up with him dramatically over dessert and then cries in his bedroom all night while light's parents are really confused why their nice son seems so angry with his perfectly polite and normal boyfriend who thanked them so sweetly for the ice cream. and soichiro walks L to the train station and bonds with him about law and then is like light i don't know why you behaved so shockingly at dinner tonight when ryuzaki (L uses a fake name for absolutely no reason at all in this au like just to be difficult) is such a nice young man and light punches his wall
you know in this instance i actually feel like it's pretty faithful

This is a dangerous sentiment for me to express, as an editor who spends most of my working life telling writers to knock it off with the 45-word sentences and the adverbs and tortured metaphors, but I do think we're living through a period of weird pragmatic puritanism in mainstream literary taste.
e.g. I keep seeing people talk about 'purple prose' when they actually mean 'the writer uses vivid and/or metaphorical descriptive language'. I've seen people who present themselves as educators offer some of the best genre writing in western canon as examples of 'purple prose' because it engages strategically in prose-poetry to evoke mood and I guess that's sheer decadence when you could instead say "it was dark and scary outside". But that's not what purple prose means. Purple means the construction of the prose itself gets in the way of conveying meaning. mid-00s horse RPers know what I'm talking about. Cerulean orbs flash'd fire as they turn'd 'pon rollforth land, yonder horizonways. <= if I had to read this when I was 12, you don't get to call Ray Bradbury's prose 'purple'.
I griped on here recently about the prepossession with fictional characters in fictional narratives behaving 'rationally' and 'realistically' as if the sole purpose of a made-up story is to convince you it could have happened. No wonder the epistolary form is having a tumblr renaissance. One million billion arguments and thought experiments about The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas that almost all evade the point of the story: that you can't wriggle out of it. The narrator is telling you how it was, is and will be, and you must confront the dissonances it evokes and digest your discomfort. 'Realistic' begins on the author's terms, that's what gives them the power to reach into your brain and fiddle about until sparks happen. You kind of have to trust the process a little bit.
This ultra-orthodox attitude to writing shares a lot of common ground with the tight, tight commodification of art in online spaces. And I mean commodification in the truest sense - the reconstruction of the thing to maximise its capacity to interface with markets. Form and function are overwhelmingly privileged over cloudy ideas like meaning, intent and possibility, because you can apply a sliding value scale to the material aspects of a work. But you can't charge extra for 'more challenging conceptual response to the milieu' in a commission drive. So that shit becomes vestigial. It isn't valued, it isn't taught, so eventually it isn't sought out. At best it's mystified as part of a given writer/artist's 'talent', but either way it grows incumbent on the individual to care enough about that kind of skill to cultivate it.
And it's risky, because unmeasurables come with the possibility of rejection or failure. Drop in too many allegorical descriptions of the rose garden and someone will decide your prose is 'purple' and unserious. A lot of online audiences seem to be terrified of being considered pretentious in their tastes. That creates a real unwillingness to step out into discursive spaces where you đ«” are expected to develop and explore a personal relationship with each element of a work. No guard rails, no right answers. Word of god is shit to us out here. But fear of getting that kind of analysis wrong makes people hove to work that slavishly explains itself on every page. And I'm left wondering, what's the point of art that leads every single participant to the same conclusion? See Spot run. Run, Spot, run. Down the rollforth land, yonder horizonways. I just want to read more weird stuff.
please try before assuming you will fail at something and become paralyzed by fear and end up doing nothing. give yourself the chance to try what youâd like to do. maybe you wonât fail. maybe youâll feel a little better just for trying. no one is judging you as much as you think they are. try.
and you donât need to be great in your first trial. itâs okay. you can learn along the way. youâll be okay. you can do this.
Here are my Dungeon meshi stickers! I basically thought "hey. lots of people will have cute food themed stickers. And that good and well, but I want that serious stuff too!" So I decided to make a series for the main gang based on sense of self instead!
Carpenter and woodworker Sawyer Macaulay loves everything about living with her dog in her little cabin in a California mountain town. Everything, except for the gossip. Especially since she doesnât share the excitement the rest of her neighbors feel when Oscar Sarkson unexpectedly drops dead. Sure, most of the town hated Oscar, but Sawyer got on fine with him. He sold her woodworking in his gift shop, and she didnât pry into his private business.Â
It worked for both of them. Right up until he died, that is.Â
Now everyone in town seems to think she must know whatâs happening to Oscarâs store and the rest of his money and property. All she knows is that everything he owned has been inherited by a distant relative. But everyone knows that.
Eddie Martinez is the contractor hired to remodel Oscarâs building and Sawyer starts working for him. But any attempts at finding out more about the mysterious heir from him are met with evasiveness.
In between uncovering shocking secrets as they remodel the old building and everyone in town pestering her for information, Sawyer has her work cut out. She needs to find out what really happened to Oscarâand whatever it is Eddie is hiding. Especially if theyâre connected.Â
To Sawyer, these secrets are like wood rot that goes deep. And as any carpenter knows, the only way to get rid of rot is to cut it out.

Thereâs a bunch of adhd advice out there thatâs like âpeople with adhd tend to work better under deadlines due to the anxiety so here are ways to artificially induce a stress response in order to get you to get work doneâ and itâs like well what if I donât want to be stressed out all the time in order to function
this gold shouldnât stay in the comments

Even short-term consistent high stress situations can lead to burn-out, which can take years to recover from, not weeks. You need to make sure advice for âmaking your ADHD work for youâ is actually working with you and not weaponizing your brain against you. Hereâs some techniques that really do help me.
Use all tools at your disposal. Get a bullet journal and make lists. Put down appointments in your phone and a physical planner. Set timers and reminders for things you need to get done. It takes practice, you do need to work on the habit, but it does help.
Write shit down immediately. Listen, youâre not going to remember it. You wonât magically recall that apartment, that birthday, or the thing you promised to bring to the party tomorrow. Write it down the moment you learn it in a place you will consistently check (again, shout-out to making lists and using a planner). This works so much better.
Use multiple alarms. I have an alarm to get up, leave for work, take my meds, and get ready for bed. I need those alarms, and I could probably use more. Sometimes I turn them off and forgot, but using them keeps me on track.
Be consistent! Wake up at the same time, try to go to sleep at the same time. Eat food and go to school or work at the same time. If you have time blindness, set up those alarms to remind you to do things.
Chunk your goals. As small as you can make them. If âdo the dishesâ is haunting you, split it up in your list as taking the dishes out of the dishwasher, putting them away, filling the dishwasher with dirty dishes, clean the sink, etc. Whatever works to keep you on track.
Schedule your writing/art/hobby time. Listen, I know this one sucks. Itâs nice to spontaneously burst with creativity, but if you donât work on sitting down and doing it consistently, youâll struggle with finding time to pull from that well you know you have. Make use of all the tools above - checklists, timers, goal chunking - to get your creative endeavors going.
Ooooh I like these! hereâs more that have worked for me
âBankâ executive function. ADHD comes with itâs highs and lows, so when you get the Inspiration tm, that is an excellent time to set things up for future you. This could be replenishing your emergency snacks, breaking down to-do items into their smaller tasks, finding or making accessibility tools, etc.
Find ways to add more fun dopamine to harder tasks. I made this post a while ago about how I approach that, but if somethingâs not stimulating, find a way to connect or interweave it with something you do find stimulating and importantly, fun. This helps to achieve the same thing that deadlines do â increased stimulation â without the damaging effects of stress, since youâre using more happy chemicals than stress chemicals
If itâs important, make sure you can see it often. This is why I put all of my to-do items in my calendar instead of some separate platform, and also why I try to keep as many of my storage situations use either shelves or clear bins, and all of my food is in clear jars or prominently labeled
Have grace for yourself. This can be hard, but when you have the space, try to ease off when your executive functionâs not working. Burnout makes executive dysfunction worse, and powering through without using your accessibility tools takes a lot more energy, which can deplete nonexistent reserves.
Donât marry yourself to âproperâ ways of doing something if it doesnât work for you. Trying to do something in a way that doesnât work is just gonna use up more energy or make something less convenient. Besides. Other people really donât care if you do things differently, and if they do, that sounds like a them problem.
Revisit old tools. Did that thing you tried and then stopped doing actually not help you? Or was it an effective habit that you accidentally fell off of? Sometimes it really is the first one. But if youâve stopped doing something, examine why, and if the answer was âI forgot,â remember thereâs no shame in that, just try again
Make it inconvenient to indulge harmful addictive tendencies. Many ADHDers are more likely to form addictive tendencies just because of how our brain latches onto the dopamine sources. Inconveniencing yourself here can be putting things out of sight or in a location that takes a bit of effort to access so itâs easier to assess âdo I actually want to be doing this, or am I just doing it because I saw it and now I feel compelled?â
watch the fuck out. if your freak matches well enough youâll both disappear like in tetris
