so i've been thinking about writing something that heavily features flashbacks to the characters' time in high school, but i have a character who came out as nonbinary and changed their name AFTER high school. my question to nonbinary people who have changed their name and consider their birth name their dead name —

is it okay for the flashbacks to call them by their old name/pronouns?

#for the most part I think it's fine? it's hard to explain but I think the context matters a lot too #but that's kinda hard to determine without someone reading it and giving feedback ig #and I think that would be better suited for a sensitivity reading after the main draft tbh #but for the most part that is still part of the character's history and experience #and it's usually a safe bet to use whatever the character uses at the time #so like doing the switch in name/pronouns as the character is figuring it out too if that makes sense #ofc others may feel differently but I think being as factual to the character's own experience is fine

I think I'm gonna order myself some eye patches bc my eye has been playing me up all day and I'd just prefer if I had the option to just not use that eye sometimes

#those not in the know - I have duane syndrome and sometimes the eye that overcompensates gets tired and I struggle to look at things #I did have a regular eye patch but it never fuckin stayed put so I'd have to get an adhesive one
