Ok so I'm not going to lie I entirely copied this off this painting.

As far as I can tell this is of King Louis I of Spain, so it makes sense why he looks like he's wearing a metal chestplate, because armor was not worn at all in battle in the 1720s. I've seen it a lot in paintings of upper class men, thought. He also has a lot of gold embroidery on his coat, which throughout the 18th century was a signifier of class. Fun fact, people even had thread picking kits where they would pick out all the hand-woven embroidery because it showed they had the money to purchase new clothes if they ruined them.

January and Jane from The 10,000 Doors of January!

From what I gathered the book takes place in the Edwardian era, which is one of the best periods of European fashion in my opinion. January is wearing a fancy lady lingerie gown--which just meant a lightweight white summer gown. I put her in one because she's supposed to have grown up higher class, though from what I can tell through research I think lower class ladies would have been able to afford lingerie gowns as well.

Jane is wearing a jumper dress, which were all the rage in the edwardian era. I could have drawn her in a maid outfit, but that didn't seem right since she is one for so little of the book. I thought the maid outfits of the edwardian era looked a little like jumper dresses so I put her in one. I wasn't super sure what to do with her hair, and tbh I'm not sure if I liked what I ended up with. She's described as having short hair, but most of edwardian hairstyles required long hair but looked short because it's all pinned up. So I just gave her short hair and went with it.

Benito Cereno art for my English class

Historical fashion stuff below

From right to left in the lineup its Cereno, Babo, and Delano.

For Cereno, he’s described as having a neat velvet suit and a sombrero(???) so I gave him that.

Babo is literally only described once as wearing trousers made from topsail fabric so I drew him in a basic 18th century sailor outfit

Delano is wearing a naval suit from hopefully around 1799 if the singular painting I found is accurate. I didn’t make his hair accurate because he seems like the kind of person to be behind the times and also cause I didn’t want to make him ugly :D I hate early 19th century hair

Explanations below the cut

On the left, the blue dress is similar to this painting of Henrietta Hobart (1688-1743).

She's wearing an apron here (I think) because this is a theater or masquerade outfit, which were usually a little more eccentric. Because the blue dress in my drawing is supposed to be from when the character was younger, I kept the apron because wearing one (when not in masquerade/theter dress) would signify you were still a young woman. Like in this painting "Charles Ambler with his elder brother Humphry and sister Elizabeth, 1726."

Second outfit on the left is not based in historical reality of the 1720s. It's supposed to be a little more sporty, since the extent of "sportwear" you get for women at the time were riding habits. She's wearing stays over a chemise tucked into men's breeches, and a pair of buckles shows that were populat in the 1720s. On the right, the drawing on the left (like that's not confusing. anyways) is my take on a pirate/sailor outfit from the time. I haven't been able to find any drawings of sailor outfits from the 1720s specifically, but there are plenty from later in the decade. Most usually show a white shirt with some kind of short coat, and either breeches or petticoat breeches. This outfit's a more formal version of that with a long waistcoat over the top. Outfit on the left of the right image is pretty similar in concept.
