“I say we kick them out, use one of the cars to drop them somewhere and drive away.” He gave a shrug, knowing it wasn’t worth wasting the resources on the thieves but the idea of killing them publicly made his stomach turn. “Not much we can do now unless we can get the council to stop it.”

“We can try to convince more people. I know this might come to bite us in the ass later on. Going against what the SEALS want, but we have to try, right?” Devyn shook her head, not quite believing it had come to this. After everything everyone had already gone through, the last thing these people needed were to watch someone else die.

“They’re looters. They put people in danger by stealing supplies. If they get off easy any power outage could mean the whole mess happening again.”

“I’m not saying you’re wrong. I brought them in because I didn’t think they deserved to walk out of here. But there’s no need to put everyone through a public execution and you know it won’t be a shot to the head. They’ll make it slow and long.”

“Everyone is fully aware of the punishments around here. It’s the first damn thing we tell people. Follow the rules or deal with the consequences. And these are the consequences. It ain’t rocket science. So I don’t exactly feel guilty.”

“This is ridiculous. How am I the only fucking person who thinks it’s crazy. I’m not saying they shouldn’t suffer the consequences of their actions. But a public execution is pushing it.”

I was simply saying they’re idiots for stealing at the time they did. Of course they were going to get caught. And now they’re going to die. Oh well.

“You really don’t have a care about anything, do you? What about all the kids and people that haven’t done anything and will be forced to watch?”

“How do you think people will start acting if we don’t punish the looters?”

“How can you even say that?”

“You’re an asshole because you didn’t guess that I had lived in the streets because, you know, you can’t read minds? Nah.” He gave her a small smile. He was well aware that a good portion of his life hadn’t been exactly ordinary, so he didn’t blame people for making assumptions sometimes. Especially since most times he talked about his past he explained things sort of vaguely. “Uh, not really. At least not that way. Honestly, except for that one time back in high school, I don’t really do relationships.” He didn’t mention it that he also still missed Matt one hell of a lot, especially after all they had been through after the outbreak. “So, your turn. Tell me about yourself.”

“I’m an asshole because I made an assumption about you without really knowing anything.” She shrugged, the guilt on her face was evident but it vanished within a few seconds as she took a deep breath and let her eyes wander over his features. “That’s how I felt. Apart from the fact that I’ve never really had anything stable in my life. But you never know what can happen. Don’t close yourself off to that option just yet, yeah? “ Smiling softly at him, her smile faltered all too quickly when he told her to talk about herself. The one thing Devyn hated but it only seemed fair. “Born and raised in a strict military home. My parents weren’t all that fond about the idea of me going into the academy as they had pulled strings to get me accepted in the military. We drifted apart. I was kind of their miracle child in a way, single child who hated the military lifestyle.”

“Not saying you’re wrong but hear me out. One can assume that most of the people here know I’m a bastard. They’re more or less aware that I’m giant dick that not is not only highly trained but has a team of highly trained men at my beck and call. Despite knowing that, they stole from us. I think we’re past the point of people just knowing of the consequences being enough. People knew about the death penalty and other such consequences and they still stole back before all this zombie shit happened. Having to actually watch someone die? It’d make ‘em think twice before doing something so foolish and selfish again.”

“It sounds to me that it’s all revolving around you and how other people see you. No offence, but that sounds more like a personal problem than anything else. If you’re afraid of appearing weak and kind -- then you need to figure that out. But you talk about them stealing from us, yet you want to make our people suffer through a public execution in order to punish them and keep them ‘in their place’. I don’t see what punishing a whole town that’s done nothing but help and keep our people safe will do apart from cause harm. --- Just think about it. But know that if you do go through with this. I won’t be attending.”

“I made my choice.” she said looking at the brunette, all in all, it was just a game. 

Lexa had no intention of drinking the girl’s alcohol, she just enjoyed riling the girl up, especially when it was over a bottle of alcohol. Lexa walked on past the brunette, rolling the alcohol out the door. 

“Now you can go get the bottle.”

Chuckling when the blonde rolled it away, Devyn couldn’t help but roll her eyes. She had never met anyone act so dramatically and like a child. 

Instead of leaving the blonde’s apartment, she stepped closer towards her as her eyes ventured over the woman. With a look that resembled disgust and pity, she finally turned around towards the hallway. If there was one thing she wouldn’t do, it was participate in such childish behavior. 

“You’d do best to stay out of my way,” she threw over her shoulder.

“Could be worse, I’m getting sleep. Can’t say it couldn’t be better though. Don’t know if anyone is sleeping well these days. But I don’t think its been worse than normal. Guess I was wrong. If only Starbucks or Dunking Doughnuts was still a thing.”

“That’s a valid point. I haven’t been getting any sleep at all, and it’s honestly a miracle that I’m still standing straight at this point. I would kill for a Starbucks, or anything with sugar in it right now. Decent coffee is probably what I miss the most if I’m honest.”

The girl either had no clue, or was a fool like the rest of anyone that doubted Lexa. Appearances were deceiving, and Lexa didn’t mind to give this one a rude awakening. A chuckled escaped the blonde as she watched the realization strike the brunette.

“I don’t think I will.” she said with a smile, nothing like booze to pass the time.

Had she been like half the women in here, Devyn would have marched over to Josh and whined about the fact that this bitch had stolen their alcohol. The bottle he had given her upon his return. No matter what, she wouldn’t have let Lexa get away with taking what was hers, but this just so happened to be something that meant a lot to her. 

“Did that sound like an option to you?.” The brunette asked through gritted teeth as she entered once more.

Lara shook her head with a chuckle and a smile, taking a hand and patting the head of her friend in a motherly kind of way. “You are so cute. And so funny!” She giggled. “What the fuck is donatella– Oh you crack me up.”  

She blocked her ears like a child and sang loudly for a moment, before pulling them out and looking at the woman with almost sheer horror. “Can we not talk about child birth? I mean I had a C-section with Colt so I’ve never experienced that pushing a giant child out of your vagina thing, and I really don’t want to start now. Giving birth in this day and age would be pretty fucking shit.” 

Devyn narrowed her eyes for a moment when Lara patted the top of her head like a dog. Lifting her hands to swatch the others away, she simply shook her head. “Well, excuse me that I had to wear a uniform everyday.” The girl laughed, barely remembering what their topic of conversation was on anymore. 

“But you did give birth! I heard that when they give you a c-section, they have to like pull out your orgasm and put them in bowls to get to... like the baby!” Her nose scrunched up in disgust as she shuddered at the thought of both being in labor and giving birth naturally. “It would be horrible. That’s probably my worst fear. Plus having a small child, you’d have no choice but to breast feed. And no alcohol. Yeah, no. I couldn’t do it.

Ruby couldn’t imagine finding anywhere in the forest that was dry enough or safe enough for the woman to feel secure trying to sleep. Watches could be taken, if there was a spot where they could shelter themselves from the wind and the rain. Giving a nod she tried to get as close as possible to the trees. The cover of the forest helping slightly to slow the rain. Now she could wipe away the water that had collected on her face and not immediately be blinded with more. Though it still wasn’t enough visibility to feel safe. The total darkness around them had somehow gotten even darker. Tree trunks obscuring their view every few feet. Watching out for any source of danger coming towards them had become increasingly more difficult. Something Ruby was all too aware of, the hair standing up on the back of her neck.

“Easier said the done.” The words were mumbled under her breath, not meant for Devyn to hear. Devyn would know how difficult the task was that she suggested it. There was no need for Ruby to remind her. Both of them would likely spend the entire night fighting against the walkers and the elements for their lives. “Maybe we can find a fallen tree, something that has some overhead cover.” The gigantic trees in Washington State did come in handy when it came to shelter. If only Ruby knew where they were in relation to which part of town. Then she might have been able to actually lead them somewhere she remembered a fallen tree.

Devyn was already exhausted from their battle against the wind and rain. Her entire person was soaked and the wind was not doing anything from stopping her clattering teeth. Her eyes kept flicking before her, hoping to catch something move in the distance but it was futile as she couldn’t see her hand in front of her face. Her teeth kept tangling up in underbrush and weeds, threatening to make her trip with every step that she took. The last thing they needed was an injury on their hands. Diesel’s ears kept perking up with every step that they took, but she simply shrugged it away with the assumption that it was a small animal in the distance. Had it been another human, or walker, she knew that he would have stopped dead in his tracks. Bitting her lower lip, she allowed herself enough courage to unclip Diesel’s leash as the pull of her dog kept making her stumble. Thankfully, he was well trained and wouldn’t go far. 

Turning her attention towards where Ruby’s voice had drifted, she let out a small breath of air before nodding. “That sounds like a good idea --- if we can find one.” She spoke calmly, her attention focused on the frame that was moving by her side. Barely able to distinguish the outline of the petite girl as the trees obscured the moon. However, her attention snapped back when she stumbled flush into Diesel that had stopped. His entire form was tensed as a low growl escaped the animal. “Sh,” she whispered to both Ruby and Diesel -- shutting the dog up instantly. Her hand reached for her knife as she let her eyes move over the direction the animal had focused on.

“I’m not saying they don’t deserve punishment. Believe me, I saw what they did. I just don’t think that you should force our people, innocent people, to watch them get killed. I’m guessing it’s a tactic to show everyone what happens if they step out of line. But the knowledge is enough.”
