Cocaine bust derails fledging GOP congressman
It appears the days of 'flying high' have come to screeching halt for newly appointed congressman from Florida, U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, after pleading guilty to cocaine possession. Well, if hip-hop artist are the new rockstars, then I guess we can consider him one of the first official political rockstars (being that he proclaims himself as the "Hip-Hop Conservative"). After he confessed to purchasing 3.5 grams of cocaine from a undercover cop in Washington's Dupont Circle neighborhood 0ctober 29, 2013, he immediately took a leave of absence from politics, and checked himself into a Naples rehabilitation center. One thing that is funny about this guy, is that he fought to pass a bill that required drug testing for food stamp recipients and championed cuts in sheep-farm subsidies. The same person who fought to bust recipients who used while recieving benefits, is the same person who uses behind closed doors. I thought he displayed a great example of character and helped represent the state of Florida in the most presentable fashion, amongst Florida's tumultuous year of it's many political debacles...said no one EVER. http://www.pulse.me/ap/ae5c6a1886f241adb07426f003f01201?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews
Tongue Pierce Lets The Paralyzed Drive Wheelchairs
An experimental device has been developed to allow the paralyzed to drive their wheelchairs simply from the movement of their tongues. The way that the device works is that the stud (magnetic stud) which resembles like any other tongue jewelry stud is pierced in their tongue. The studs acts as a joystick to allow mobility of the wheelchair. The stud is syncs to an app that is installed on the smartphone whhich the user carries with them at all times. The choice of the ttongue being the source of control is mainly due to most paralzed victims are from spical cord injuries, making the tongue the most mobile and accessible organ. The technology is still in the testing stages, but I feel it is genius, cutting edge, and will allow much needed mobility and independence for the people who need it most. http://www.pulse.me/ap/7d8135a4dab04d21a1abf0bebed5d8b9?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews
Families Dealing With Severe Bullying, Threats
This story has to deal with a parent in the Alvardo ISD, who has a child who is experiencing bullying in school. She is requesting that the school district to punish the boys who were responsible for beating up her son. She further states that her son received a busted lip and is afraid to go outside, in fear that he may experience bullying. I beleive that deciplinary action should be taken up againnst the kids who harmed her child, but i'm afraid the bullying will not stop there and I believe it will not solve the issue fully. Reason being is that it is unrealistic to believe the bullying issue will ever go away. It's apart of life in general. The world is filled with aggressors, whether they're in the school yards or behind desk in corporate offices, they have and will continue exist as long as mankind exist. I'm not an advocoate for bullying, but I believe bullying is a necessary evil in a sense, because it makes the bullied aware about the realities of the world and should prompt action into combating the issue head on. Letting the proper authorities know of the bullying is definetly a step in the right direction, but also signing up the kid in a self-defense class like karate or boxing, participating in exercises to boast confidence, clubs, etc. could also help in defense against bullies. I beleive all parties involved, whether the bullies parents, the bullied parents, or the school district, should all take equal responsibility in rectifying the problem because i'm sure it's not the first, or last encounter that they will experience with an issue of this kind. http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2013/11/26/families-dealing-with-severe-bullying-threats/?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews
Jury Convicts Oklahoma Cop In Death Of Unarmed Teen
On November 26, 2013, an Oklahoma jury convicted a veteran police captain of first-degree manslaughter of an unarmed teen, whom he previously got into a scuffle with and attempted to get away by foot. On March 14, 2012, following a high-speed chase, the victim, Dane Scott Jr. attempted to escape by foot. The victim and Del City Police Capt. Randy Trent Harrison got into a scuffle, where the officer confiscated one gun from the victim, but as the victim tried to get away, the captain assumed the teen was reaching for another weapon (due to his baggy pants) and shot 4 times at Scott, hitting him once in the back, all the while putting innocent bystanders and another officer in harms way. Before the victim was shot, he was putting his hands in the air, because another officer was trailing behind him on foot and was able to tase him. The jury beleived that it was a personal vendeta against the victim for the captain's end, mainly because he previously arrested him in the past. I beleive Harrison exhibited reckless and excessive use of force and believe the correct action was taken with him being convicted, because even though the victim was on the opposite side of the law, doesn't mean death is the resolution, especially at the risk of other's harmed in the process. http://www.pulse.me/ap/c286502f8da5490ba7b34616fc43e9be?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews
Oklahoma's Governor Denies Marriage Benefits To National Guard Members
In an attempt to prevent gay soldierrs from receiving marriage benefits, Oklahoma's Gevernor Mary Fallin ordered state National Guard facilities to stop processing benefits for all service members. The apparent reasoning behind this stance stems from a constitutional provision from back in 2004, accroding to Fallin's communications director, Alex Weintz, “In 2004, there was a constitutional provision on the ballot that defined marriage between a man and a woman and also said that we don’t recognize or confer marriage benefits on any other type of marriages besides that. It passed with 75 percent of the vote. And what the governor has been saying is, regardless of where you stand on gay marriage, she’s Oklahoma’s chief executive, and she can’t ignore Oklahoma law.” Fallin would follow with her statement “The decision reached today allows the National Guard to obey Oklahoma law without violating federal rules or policies. It protects the integrity of our state Constitution and sends a message to the federal government that they cannot simply ignore our laws or the will of the people.” I feel this is wrong on so many levels and that this stance has been implemented to back Oklahoma's "red state" religious views. People like Governor Fallin should not be in office because she is obbviously not in favor for the well being of the people as a whole, by completely withholding benefits to all married couples, just to get a point across. With people in office like her, they tend to slow the progression of society and keep people divided. Maybe she should go work in a church, because a position in government is not for her and people of like-minded stances (Texas Republican Governor, Rick Perry). http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/11/27/oklahoma-s-governor-denies-marriage-benefits-to-national-guard-members.html
Ohio official: Returning adopted child a crime
An Ohio couple has been indicted with misdemeanor charges for nonsupport after giving their 9 year old adopted son over to child services. They raised the boy from infancy and decided to turn him over to child welfare officials after displaying aggressive behavior and threatening the family with a knife. I believe after 9 years of a raising a child, the least law enfocements could do was charge this couple was a misdemeanor, because this is wrong on many levels. When a child is adopted, that is a commitment that one makes in order to ensure that child is loved and taken care of. I would imagine the road getting tougher as a child ages, but that's what it takes in order for a child to grow and understand the world. Now, after 9 years, this boy has once again been abandoned and I can't image how confused, angry, and alone he must feel. Although he we was previously showing troubling behavior, i'm curious as to what steps the parents took prior to returning him to child services? I wonder if they exercised withhin all their power to help this child? All in all, one should never give up on a child who has already been through so much. http://www.pulse.me/ap/7c89eb4c5dfb4b85bba421509fda8751?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews
NSA 'planned to discredit radicals over web-porn use'
The National Security Agency has been collecting up massive amounts of informaton and elicit web activity against individuals, namely six muslim radicalists, in order to discredit their political and religious efforts. An example is evidence of the target "viewing sexually explicit material online or using sexually explicit persuasive language when communicating with inexperienced young girls". Other accusations include: -using donations to pay personal expenses -charging exorbitant speaking fees -using questionable sources and contradictory language in public messages Now, In the wake of NSA expose, brought about by whistleblower Edward Snowden, this news does not come as any suprise. I understand how some may feel 'all is fair in love and war', but for one, it has not been confirmed that the six muslim radicalist are even terrorists or involved in any terrorist organizations in the first place. Secondly, this is a direct violation of our right to privacy as American citizens. I understand if there is nothing to hide then why worry, but even in that right, just because you can watch me, doesn't mean that you should watch me...it's creepy. I beleive it's becoming more evident that we are in a police/surveillance state. This could easily be anyone else and this definelty holds true to the notion that 'they are watching you'. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25118156
Three killed in collapse at venue hosting World Cup opener
Today, part of the stadium that will host the World Cup in Sao Paolo, Brazil in 2014, collapsed causing extensive damage and killing 3 people. This was one of six venues out of the total of 12 that had to be completed by the end of the 2013 year. I beleive the incident will not stop people from going to the World Cup because it is such a beloved event worldwide. I'm not sure how the time constraints are made up, but maybe the board who decides the World Cup locations and how to go about organizing them, may want to consider opening up the time frame of completion of newly built venues, especially when people from all over the world will be in attendance. I can't help but to feel like if more time, detail and attention was put into place in building these venues, that this incident may not have happened. This is sad, but maybe in future planning, they may take these factors into consideration. http://www.pulse.me/ap/f5b3ba30b93746daa1a28c84b2c8ded4?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews
George Zimmerman Banned From The Use Of Guns
After November 19, 2013 arrest for an alleged assault against his girlfriend, George Zimmerman is NOW banned from guns by a Florida judge. My initial thought was maybe his girlfriend must had just put on a hoodie and was heading towards a candy jar or something. Then I thought, maybe he thought she looked suspicious in the area of the room she was located in and felt he had to do his "neighborly duties" and intervene. I'm not sure, but in the judges eyes, this was the straw that broke the camels back. The girlfriend further stated that he was "suicidal" and quoted him stating he had "nothing to lose". This is the same guy who was acquitted of the murder of Trayvon Martin in February 2012, a 17-year old, unarmed black male in a hoodie, with a bag of skittles, and even after that incident, the powers that be still felt it was safe for George Zimmerman to carry weapons. Then I question, why take away his guns now? I mean, how many more incidents are left until he harms or kills someone else? He's a threat not only to society, but himself, so he should not be in public freely. Florida will learn eventually, because as the old quote says, "what goes around, comes around", and I just hope that another innocent victim isn't harmed before they realize it. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/11/19/george-zimmerman-banned-from-using-guns-in-court-hearing.html
Are Holiday Retail Forecast Set Too High For Black Friday This Year?
It's that time of the year again when millions of consumers begin to gear up and plan their Christmas "hitlist" of purchases to make on November 29 2013, also known as Black Friday. Many retail research teams, such as Deliotte and The National Retail Foundation, predict a 3.9-4.5% boast in holiday sales, whereas other groups, suchas the researchers at Barclay predict a decline from previous years. I originally found this odd, but they explained that typically Black Friday sales and back-to-school sales mirror eachother to somewhere around 85%. This year, back-to-sales saw a decline in sales, and they believe the same will happen this year for Black Friday. I believe that Black Friday sales will be equal or better in sales, simply because we are a consumerist society worldwide and people cannot resist themselves, especially during the holidays. With products releases such as the PS4 and XBox One, people will be lined up days before the sales begin. The only way I can envision a decline in sales this year is if an unforeseen catostrophic event occured that was just devasting...but even then, there will still be a couple hundred people fighting for the last 50-inch flatscreen tv at Walmart. http://mobile.businessweek.com/articles/2013-11-26/black-friday-bear-are-holiday-retail-forecasts-way-too-high?
