Women with No Women’s Rights in Turkey

Turkish women have faced many difficulties throughout history. Even though some progress has been made, they still encounter challenges today. Here are some of the main struggles they have experienced, according to the author Eli Shafak:

Gender Inequality: Turkish women are not treated equally to men in many areas of life, like work, school, and politics. They often get paid less than men for the same job.

Violence Against Women: Some women in Turkey face violence, especially at home. Even though there are laws against it, it still happens. Sometimes, women are killed by their family in the name of "honor."

Limited Access to Education: In the past, girls were not allowed to go to school, but it has improved. However, in some places, girls still have a hard time going to school because of their family or community beliefs.

Not Enough Women in Power: There aren't many women in important government positions. More women need to be involved in making decisions for the country.

Child Marriage and Forced Marriages: In some parts of Turkey, girls are forced to marry at a young age. This can limit their future opportunities and choices.

Reproductive Rights: Women's rights to control their own bodies and family planning are sometimes restricted.

Cultural Expectations: In some places, traditional roles for women are strictly followed, which can limit their opportunities and choices.

Turkish women have been working hard to fight for their rights and equality. Women's groups and activists are trying to make things better and create a fairer society for everyone in Turkey.

Dalia Mogahed

Dalia Mogahed spoke about what it was like to be Muslim in America post 9/11 terrorist attacks. She shed light on both sides of the polarized reaction. She spoke about people attacking Muslims for no reason at all, and she also spoke about people showing up to her mosque in support of her religion. She is a powerful speaker who makes us all think about our reactions to those who practice different beliefs than we do. It is important, not to listen to a “single story” but to get to know people for who they truly are.

Another Islamic feminist  takes a deep dive in her article “Veiled Resistance” where she discusses women’s dress in the Middle East. I admit, before I read this article, I thought that women wearing veils was because they were subjugated. It never occurred to me that women would want to dress like this. I used to think that when Middle Eastern women immigrated to America, they would quickly choose to NOT wear their BIRKA because it was not mandated in America. Through her writings, I have learned both sides of the story. Some women embrace the traditional dress and some women wish to eschew it.
