“I see.” Kinsey looked down at her hands, frowning with thought. “That must make things terribly complicated sometimes.”

“Yeah, but it’s okay,” he said. “It’s been a long time since I struggled to find things to eat. My grandparents had a rough time figuring it out after my mother left, but that was like fifteen years ago.”

“Well, if there’s anything you need that we don’t have, do let us know,” Kinsey told him. “I’m more than happy to take a trip down to the shops if need be.”

"Sure,” Tseth said. “I drive, though, so I probably can get around okay with the car.” He finished up rolling the dough and set them to rise once more under a towel. “That needs another thirty or so minutes before going in the oven, and then we can start on the soup. You wanna try some other Wii Sports?”

Tseth didn’t let go, not quite yet. The prince would let him know when enough was enough, but he wanted to be there as long as Corraidhín needed. He wanted to say something more meaningful than any of the phrases he knew, but in the end all he could do was nod, tears pricking his own eyes.

Corraidhín let Tseth know when enough was enough by nearly falling asleep on him. All if his grief had exhausted him, and here he was, safe and warm with another person to comfort him and look out for him. 

But he caught himself nodding off, and carefully disengaged from the other boy. Tseth probably had other things to do; he couldn’t stay here all day just because Corraidhín was tired and hurting. 

Still, he wanted to tell Tseth how much it meant to him, that Tseth had stayed. So he took Tseth’s hand, and said the first word that came to mind to describe the way Tseth’s company had made him feel, one he hoped Tseth would understand: “Friends?”

After a moment to figure out the word, it clicked and Tseth squeezed the prince’s hand with a watery and hopeful smile. “Friends.”

“Bully,” he laughed as he leaned down to give her the kiss, then scooted out to scout out the kitchen.

The kitchen was empty, but Millie and Iliana were sitting together in the living room. They both looked up when Tseth came out of Delia’s room, and Iliana asked, “How is she?”

“Okay for now,” Tseth said. “We’re gonna occupy the kitchen for a little bit if that’s okay?”

“You really should be eating more if you’re doing regular donating,” Tseth said, shaking his head. “I’m good for the night, though.”

“I donate sporadically at best,” Delia assured him. “Which is a damn shame, but what can you do.” She shook her head, smiling, and sighed. “Get some rest. I’ll catch you later and we’ll work out our plan.”

Sleep had been hard before and almost impossible now that he didn’t need it. “Okay,” he said. “Hey, how far away is the nearest library?”

“You didn’t before?” Delia asked. “What a boring world you must have come from.”

“I mean, it should tell you something that vampires and humans are genetically compatible where I’m from. Unless humans here have freakish healing too, but it seems like not.”

“God, I wish.” Delia twisted the lid back onto the peanut butter jar and tucked it back into the fridge. “Do you need anything before I go find El? I owe her a meal.” 

“You really should be eating more if you’re doing regular donating,” Tseth said, shaking his head. “I’m good for the night, though.”

“Trust me when I say I learned my lesson the first time,” Tseth replied wryly, raising his previously-burned hand. “Although, it’s healing up pretty quick.” He paused as he looked at it, finding it almost completely healed. He flexed his fingers. “Hey, wait a minute. When did that happen? Do I have super healing now?”

“You didn’t before?” Delia asked. “What a boring world you must have come from.”

“I mean, it should tell you something that vampires and humans are genetically compatible where I’m from. Unless humans here have freakish healing too, but it seems like not.”

“Yeah,” he said, finishing off the blood and then moving to the sink to rinse it out. “I guess I’ll test in the morning whether I’ve got that sunlight immunity or not.”

“Just be careful about that,” Delia warned. “Like, stick a hand in the sun, don’t just step into it, yeah?”

“Trust me when I say I learned my lesson the first time,” Tseth replied wryly, raising his previously-burned hand. “Although, it’s healing up pretty quick.” He paused as he looked at it, finding it almost completely healed. Tseth gave a groaning sigh, setting the box on the counter and opening it up to get to the container inside. “Eugh,” he said as he opened it up. “I’m going to have to eat this with a spoon.”

He caught a whiff of it and immediately felt the characteristic responses of hunger. Despite his statement, he had to restrain himself from throwing it back right then and there; it would be a mess and he would waste part of Eliya’s generous donation. A little shaky, he went over to where he’d seen Delia grab a spoon for her peanutbutter, checking one drawer and then the next before succeeding in his quest. Then he leaned against the counter as he half-spooned half-drank the somewhat coagulated liquid into his mouth. He felt instantly improved.

“Sorry,” he said after a few moments, wiping his mouth with the side of his hand. “I usually do this in private.” And … he didn’t mind the taste? It was even good? For once in his life, he’d enjoyed blood.

“Not sure what you’re apologizing for,” Delia remarked. She had continued to eat the peanut butter while Tseth tended to his own hunger. “Feeling better?”

“Yeah,” he said, finishing off the blood and then moving to the sink to rinse it out. “I guess I’ll test in the morning whether I’ve got that sunlight immunity or not.”

“I mean, true. But more likely is that I just won’t like it,” Tseth said. “I’ve never liked blood and I can’t imagine undead blood being much tastier.”

“So hold your nose and chug it,” Delia suggested. “Don’t worry, you’ve got this.”

“Being allergic to my alleged single source of food sounds like it would be a really big problem,” he laughed. “Unless I can be allergic to particular donors, which would also be weird but less weird.” Gingerly, he pulled out the lunch bag with the blood in it, staring down at as he used a foot to shut the fridge door.

“Like weirder hasn’t happened to you this week,” Delia said around another mouthful of peanut butter.

“I mean, true. But more likely is that I just won’t like it,” Tseth said. “I’ve never liked blood and I can’t imagine undead blood being much tastier.”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. I uh… I guess I’m just… a little nervous.” He snorted softly. “That sounds stupid, sorry.”

“Not really.” She scooped up another spoonful of peanut butter. “Worst case, you turn out to be allergic for some reason, and I jab you with the epipen Frank makes me carry. Best case, you stop being hungry.”

“I can hear you trying to swallow,” he said with his head in the fridge. “Protein doesn’t have to be–” His eyes fell on the container of Eliya’s blood, and his breath hitched a moment, knuckles white on the door frame. “Doesn’t have to be boring,” he finished, taking in a deep breath to relax. He hadn’t realized he was that hungry.

“Anything I have to fight this much isn’t boring.” Delia had been watching him carefully, despite the casual way she leaned back against the counter. “If you’re hungry, you should eat, too, you know. It’s not going to do anyone any favors if you get all cranky because you waited too long.”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. I uh... I guess I’m just... a little nervous.” He snorted softly. “That sounds stupid, sorry.”

“It looks really sad,” Tseth said, coming in to check what was in the fridge. “Wasteful, even, given all the things you could be eating. You’re not even putting it on bread.”

“It’s protein,” Delia objected. With some difficulty of the kind typically associated with peanut butter, she swallowed what she was eating and went on, more clearly, “I like it.” 

“I can hear you trying to swallow,” he said with his head in the fridge. “Protein doesn’t have to be--” His eyes fell on the container of Eliya’s blood, and his breath hitched a moment, knuckles white on the door frame. “Doesn’t have to be boring,” he finished, taking in a deep breath to relax. He hadn’t realized he was that hungry.

The question caught Delia a little off guard, but the consideration he had in just asking filled her with a quiet warmth. She laughed silently and mouthed the word, ‘Nerd,’ before nodding. 

“Bully,” he laughed as he leaned down to give her the kiss, then scooted out to scout out the kitchen.

“You’re telling me,” Delia remarked. Spoon acquired, she unscrewed the lid from the peanut butter and dug in. “Now, I don’t have anything by way of cash, but I have friends here and there. I’ll make some calls, see if anyone’s willing to put you up for a while.”

“I used to busk for cash so I guess I don’t have a lot in the way of marketable skills if I end up frying in the sun after all,” he said, eyeing the peanut butter. “Do you–do you want help like, making something to eat?”

“What for?” Delia asked, blinking at him in confusion. She considered her spoonful of peanut butter before shoving it in her mouth and saying around it, words sticky and muffled, “This is fine.”

“It looks really sad,” Tseth said, coming in to check what was in the fridge. “Wasteful, even, given all the things you could be eating. You’re not even putting it on bread.”

“Oh yeah, I brought some stuff over to make bread and soup,” he said. “Wanna do that?”

Delia nodded. Cooking always helped to lift her spirits. It wasn’t as therapeutic as hammering out a melody on a steelpan, but it was better than nothing by a long shot. Can you just make sure Millie’s not in the kitchen?

“Sure,” he said, scooting off the bed. “I’ll be right back. Forehead kiss?”

“That’s fair,” Tseth mumbled, still embarrassed over what he’d dragged Delia into with the werewolf family. “Oh, um… I think I’d rather settle somewhere, really. I’m… travel’s hard.”
