ID Verification has given rise to a plague of scams that ask you to verify because, you see, your account is compromised, please, we need your ID to make sure it's you... or whatever.

I've been @'ed in one myself, and while spamming their replies to call them out as the fucking scam they are, I saw one person reply to me saying "Thanks, I was..." - presumably about to give the scammer their government ID. We were subsequently blocked by the scam account in question, of course.

Meaning, it isn't just old fucks who fall for it, people in their late teens and 20 somethings do too. A lot of people probably don't even think twice about it until they see someone reblog a warning post about this brand new scam...

...and that's just on tumblr. That's just one format of this scam taking advantage of this wave of "give us your ID to use socmed!" I'm sure there are more, and way more insidious, versions floating around out there or being devised as I type this. Like, it'd work so well as a form of redirect malware that hijacks your browser and brings you to a form. If you want to proceed... Please give us your ID...

"If you have nothing to hide..." Hey, snap back to reality for a sec. The powers one party gives themselves gets transferred to the next. You can very easily end up with something to hide when the opposing party gets in.

Take for example what is occurring in the USA and the UK with trans people.

... Also it's still illegal to be gay in a vast number of countries. I dare say gay people in those countries have something to hide...

"Well, it's no different from the liquor store!" The liquor store doesn't store a copy of your ID in their back room that thieves can break in and steal.

Unlike verification services that may or may not retain a copy of your ID. You don't know until it's too late. Even if they say "we delete it uwu" - there have been companies that say that, but have been found to have kept the information on file.

And when that data gets stolen? Well... Data can be copied and sold multiple times. Who knows how many people end up with a copy of your ID, passport, or whatever? You don't know... Until it's too late :)

I'll never understand people who think mixed age friendships are "creepy".

When I was ~25 I met some guy in a TF2 game and we made a good pybro team. We became friends. He was 15. We played the video game together, we talked about the video game, and continued to pybro for random Engineers. Then he stopped talking to me for almost three years and got real chatty around his almost-18th birthday and now it's 11 years later and we're still friends. He even came over physically to visit back in like 2023.

Unfortunately he could only stand to stay over for one night because he hated my dog and spent the rest of his week in town in a motel but anyway, "they have nothing in common why would they want to be friends" is a dumb statement given the existence of video games and fandom and just, like, hobbies, in general.

So what, pray tell, is wrong with literally any of the above? If both parties know how to act appropriately with regards to ages and boundaries, where is the issue?

A particularly coercive (boy/girl)friend can talk another kid into sending nudes or film them without their knowing during intimate moments. In addition to that, teachers, parents, youth pastors, family friends... Should we keep developing humans from forming acquaintanceships or friendships until they turn 18 for their own safety?

That isn't to say I'm advocating for adults or minors to actively seek out friendships with people wildly out of their age group (personally I slap MDNI (with the note of 'over private DMs/etc,' idc if some kid chats at me in replies where everyone can see lul) on literally every aspect of my online existence) but if it happens organically like the TF2 pybro shit and everything is kept above board literally whaaaat is the issue 🤨

Especially in mixed communities like an art community or a coding community where people are there to learn and never really mention how old or young they are 'cause it's irrelevant. Friendships happen.

See, the solution here is simple.

Legalize. Regulate. If people can get their poison of choice from a place that isn't going to lace it or cut it with anything nefarious, a place where the quality is assured and therefore they can be more confident in the dose they're taking, then there's less risk of OD or dying by something you didn't plan on taking in the first place.

I will never understand why recreational drugs are seen as "bad." In an increasingly shitty world, who cares if someone else wants to indulge in a little escapism? They're gonna do it anyway.

Plus one of the most popular and widely used and highly addictive substances in the world is a mind-altering psychoactive drug that your body can and will develop a dependence on. However, people forget that it's a drug.

Caffeine. It's caffeine. The funny little thing you can easily overdose on but can buy at any age even if Redbull or whatever is regulated because it's also in coffee. Anyone and their child can buy coffee. I drank two very strong cups once and my heart stopped briefly. I'm only still here because I got lucky.

But I digress. The "war on drugs" harms more people than it helps. Several illicit substances (like shrooms) have legitimate medicinal uses but the red tape keeps things more difficult than need be.
