Phobias for Characters

Giving your characters phobias is a very simple way to humanize your characters in a way that the reader roots for them.

Make the phobia as complex and interesting as possible intertwining with past experiences that might have caused it. This ensures that the reader gets invested and wants to see those characters overcome their fears and win.

Asterea pulled her knees to her chest, staring at the shimmering stars above. “Ever thought maybe the world isn’t real and we are just pawns of a game we don’t understand?”

Mathew took a deep breath before turning towards the crowd of kids in front. “Maybe. What makes you so sure we are real. We aren’t just fragments of this artificially generated world?”

Mathew, a fifteen year old child, hiding in the kitchen cabinet as dozens of mercenaries armed to the teeth are there to kill him Menard, a literal god sent to save and bring back Mathew in one piece: *shows up in underpants, holding a tub of popcorn*

Charlie: The gods are stupid, they are a bunch of faceless people we have submitted our lives to. I would never praise their name! Asterea: You were at the temple yesterday when Mathew took your cookie Charlie:

Asterea and Mathew trapped around a corner, amidst battle

*Mathew pins a map to the wall, tracing his finger along with the map, finding a way out*    “Alright, Specks has found us a way out but they have a big house of firepower so we’ll need to push ‘em hard” Mathew said, stuffing the map back into his pocket.    “I think I want you to kiss me” Asterea said wistfully    “Huh?” Mathew blurted as his heartbeat skyrocketed    “I think you should kiss me” She repeated    “We need to go or they’ll kill us and that does include you too” Mathew mumbled     “Nah just kiss me-”      “Asterea!!”      “KISS MEE!!” She said impatiently, her eyes turning to horror red      “FINE!” Mathew cried grabbed her collar and slipped his lip in between her two while Asterea caressed his neck with her nails, Mathew backed up his eyes still shut tight. “Alright we can’t push and take the firepower so we take the sneaky way out...”        “Oki <3″
