orbofsight:
I stifle a small chuckle and scratch the back of my head with my free hand, forcing a pained smile as I follow after the young doctor around the hallway corner.
âRight, introductions, sorry.  Itâs Seta, Souji Seta.â  In my defense, itâs a tense situation, but maybe letting him know Iâm not just some random guy with magic powers carrying around a samurai sword would have put him better at ease initially.  âIâm a private eye whenever Iâm not dealing with this nonsense.  Supernatural threat aside, itâs a pleasure to meet you, Keisuke.â
The longer we stay in contact the more sure of it I feel.  Just as I draw on the strength of my friends, I can sense the same type of unbreakable connection between Keisuke and someone else.  Thereâs no doubt heâs close to a Persona user, but whoever that could be is something I donât have the time deduce at present.
On the last leg of our journey, the far end of the passage ahead of us is especially dark compared to what weâve been through so far.  It seems like it just ends in pitch blackness.  I would owe that to the lack of windows, but seeing one caked over in black slime on my immediate right eliminates that possibility.  Straining my eyes, I finally see whatâs in our way.
Itâs worse than a lack of light.  Thereâs a horde of Shadows completely packing this hallway, forming a physical wall of darkness.  I was right.  Theyâve been drawn to the psych ward en masse.  As if sensing my focused sight, hundreds of pairs of red eyes blink into existence, all of them staring at the two of us.  This many Shadows⊠ Itâs just absurd.  As weak as they are, I donât have time to fight them all by virtue of their sheer numbers. Â
Withdrawing my sword once more, I step several paces in front of the other man and beckon another card into existence.  âIâm going to make a hole.  Follow me through it and donât stop running until youâre on the other side of the door.â
Trying to hit them all at once wonât work.  Even with a mass spell, I doubt my range would be wide enough to target them all.  Iâll have to focus everything Iâve got into one strike and clear a path.  If we can reach the one causing this, we wonât have to worry about the small fry.
Electricity crackles at my fingertips as I summon my arcane power into physical form.   âStrike true,â commanding my other self, I crush the construct in my hand.  âZiodyne!â
The thunder god takes form once more, unleashing a pillar of lightning from his core.  The searing light cuts through the viscous creatures, forcing open a divide in their barricade.  Darting forward, I sprint through the shattered legion and drive my forearm into the wardâs door, slamming it shut behind me as soon as I see my companion join me.
With nervous laughter cutting in between my heaving breaths, I lean against the door, thankful for the barrier it presents between us and them.  âHeh⊠ Funny thing about Shadows⊠ They canât figure out how to open doors⊠ Isnât that the weirdest thing?â
I turn my hung head to the good doctor, only to see more than one of him in the room.  Haunting yellow eyes gaze down at his own face through the same pair of spectacles.  At once, it clicks in my mind.  Of course, Keisuke would have the strongest Shadow here.
The prospect of my ordinary friends ever facing their other selves has always been a fear of mine.  Even with the support Iâve offered to help them accept themselves, I canât begin to imagine what effect being linked to my power might have on them.  For the friend of another Wild Card, how much worse might that be?
âOh shit.â  As the expletive leaves me, I brace myself to learn the answer.
I return the smile with one of my own - itâs slightly strained, but given the situation I hope I can be forgiven for being on edge. Seta seems like a nice enough person that he would understand, given the supernatural monsters and the time constraints weâre under. Neither of us really have the time to stand and get to know one another, so for the moment a name will have to do. I stick close to him as we sweep through the remaining corridors; if all I can do is navigate, Iâll at least have to be efficient with it. We turn the final corner... and see nothing.
I quickly realise that Iâm not staring into an abyss, and by the time Iâve glanced at Seta for an explanation Iâm met with far too many pairs of glowing red eyes for comfort. Shadows...? And so many of them? Surely we have no chance of breaking through every single one of them! Instinctively I retract a step, mind racing to try and configure an alternative way through to the ward - but as I step backward, the other advances. Clearly he intends to find a way through one way or another. Iâm hesitant, to say the least, but he is the one who best knows how to deal with the mess weâre in. Protesting will do nothing but waste time.
I swallow hard but manage to nod in response to his instructions, tensing my muscles in order to break into a sprint as soon as the opening presented itself. A bolt of lightning shoots from a type of creature that appeared to be under Setaâs command - too many things happen at once for me to really process any of it. All I really comprehend is that I need to be on the other side of that barricade by the time the monsters recover themselves. I dart forward before the lightning has even dissipated, moving for the door as if my life depended on it.
The door slams behind me and I dare to take a breath, but I donât get time to take a break. A glance upward, and what I see freezes me to the spot in an instant. Souji speaks, but I donât hear what heâs saying - Iâve felt weighed down this entire time, but the sight before me now almost causes me to pass out right there and then. Itâs... me. Iâm looking at myself, but.. something is desperately wrong. Malice rolls off of the other figure in waves, and it stares straight at me with toxic yellow eyes that seem almost luminescent in the dimness of our surroundings.
âBeing led here by someone else. How predictable.â
I--no, it-- spits out a scathing laugh, the voice distorted and unnatural. A chill slips up my spine in an instant, and though I try to speak nothing seems to come out aside from a splutter. If I had any colour left in my face before itâs surely all drained out now. Why..? I donât understand. Why am I looking at myself? I tear my eyes from the unnerving doppelgĂ€nger just long enough to glance at Souji, distantly aware that Iâm bound to look every bit as shocked as I feel. I shape my mouth around a question -- am I doing this? -- but before I can speak the other figure interrupts.
âAll these years and you still canât do anything yourself. Have you ever made a decision without someone else holding your hand the whole time?â
âI - of course I have!â The retort rises in my throat before I can repress it. It just sneers in response. I donât feel Seta at my side preparing any sort of attack, which concerns me somewhere beneath all this bewilderment. If my instinct was right... this was what was causing all the issues. As long as it remained, the patients... everyone here was in danger, and there wasnât a single thing I could do about it.
âLiar.â Itâs odd to hear my own voice with so much venom. âYou and I both know the truth. Without someone else telling you how to live, youâre lost. Hasnât it always been the same? Even your friends couldnât stop you from pussyfooting around, umming and ahh-ing and whining about how unfair it was that you couldnât step up and make your own decisions! And now...â
A predatory smile contorts the familiar features.
âWell. The only one who got close to changing that isnât around any more, is he?â
I recoil instantly, as if the creature had reached out and slapped me across the face.
âD-donât.â If it hears me, it doesnât pay much attention - but Iâm so caught up in what itâs saying that I donât even consider how it knows so much about me. Instead, it only laughs, the sound chillingly hollow.
âHa! Some doctor. One of our closest friends drops dead of a mystery illness and we never noticed a single symptom? For shame.â The voice oozes with feigned sincerity. âHe must have suffered horribly. Maybe if we werenât so incompetent, heâd still be--â
âStop! Stop.â I canât hear any more. Itâs as if it knows exactly what to say to get a response - as if it can see my deepest, darkest thoughts through those glowing eyes that so resemble my own. Iâve never told a soul about this; the doubt, the guilt.Â
âAm I wrong?â Itâs mocking me. âTell me Iâm wrong. Go on. Say thatâs not how you feel. Take control for once in your life.â
Somewhere inside, I know that Iâm being goaded, but the words resonate too deeply to just ignore. I canât help but react.
âThatâs.. you, youâre--â
