Imagine being severely depressed for literally years. You finally get a little bit of energy and motivation to go out and do something, and someone sees your blank expression and says "smile". Suddenly, all the reasons you don't have to smile, and all the struggles you've been dealing with come flooding back in, and you're back to the grasp of the abyss you've been trying to escape.

Or, you are feeling a little bit better and have finally managed some self care, so you decide to post a photo online. Someone comments "smile," and the same thing happens. You're reminded of all the reasons you haven't been able to smile all because a complete stranger would prefer you smiling.

Telling someone to smile simply because that's what YOU want is like telling someone with cancer to "just get better".

Please stop. You don't know what people are going through behind their online posts, and these are REAL PEOPLE you are talking to.
