Asking for a Letter of Recommendation
I’ve seen some people post about being nervous/scared of rejection/etc so here is my strategy for requesting a letter of rec:
1. Title the email clearly, so recommender can access later: “Recommendation Request for NAME LASTNAME”
2. Greet them formally: “Dear Dr. X,” (I tend to do this no matter how close the relationship is)
3. Make the request: “I am writing to ask if you would be willing to write a letter of recommendation to support my application to WHATEVER THING.”
4. Tell them the deadline: “I would need the letter by MONTH/DAY/YEAR.” (If you want to give a reason, you can also say that the application is due, or that you are hoping to submit your application by that date.)
5. Why Them?: Share 1-2 sentences about why you think they are the right person to recommend you, or what they might add to your application. “Given your role as my advisor/mentor/colleague/etc, I believe you could offer a clear picture of my interpersonal skills/research abilities/developing strengths/academic abilities/etc.”
6. Offer to Help: Let them know that if they accept the offer, you will provide guidance and support in letter-writing. “If you are willing to write the letter, I would be happy to share more information about myself and my experiences, as well as information about where to send the letter.”
7. Help them decide if they are the right fit: Attach your CV, so they can take a look and make a more informed decision about whether they can confidently recommend you. “I have attached my CV in case you would like to review it.”
8. Thank them for their consideration and/or time
9. Sign off: Make sure your contact information is included in your email signature.

Seven Sisters nitpick: as others in the notes have said, Vassar was founded as a women’s college in 1861. It was not a men’s college that had recently become coed (though it did become coed rather than a women’s college in 1969). Sutematsu is one of its earliest alums, period!

It must have started snowing a lot last night (still does), which was a very nice surprise to wake up to! This day is going to be busy, first five hours of lectures and then a zoom meeting for a presentation in a class next week. That’s going to be fun… Something to look forward to however is that a friend and I planned to go on a walk this evening, so we’ll see all the city lights again while walking through freshly fallen snow.

as much as i love the sunshine, the focus i get from listening to the rain with a lit candle is unreal. i think i’m finally making a dent with physics, and not a moment too soon because i could feel myself falling behind on my exam schedule.
Finally about to submit the final assignment for my human behaviour and crim justice class. By far this has been the ugliest assignment I’ve ever had to do and I did not love it. Anyways, campus is open! Once I’m out of quarantine that’s where I’ll be headed. 113 days until thesis is due
31.10.2020 // i just celebrated my 18th birthday, my first semester of uni has ended, and i have a week off before exams start to work on my essays. life is good :)

*pretends to be shocked but also maybe this will make people realize that Indigenous People Know What The Hell They’re Doing and Deserve Respect*
3 other fun/cool facts about the Inuit:
1. They also invented kayaks and dog booties.
Dog booties are actually really important for working sled dogs in winter to protect their paw pads from iceburn and keep ice from getting in between their toes and burning them that way.
2. The traditional Inuit diet is one of the healthiest in the world, and the most balanced for the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 consumption
Most modern diets consume way too much Omega 6 and not enough Omega 3.
3. Inuit is a plural noun. When speaking about a single person the correct word is Inuk (always capitalized)
For example, “This Inuk woman is wearing traditional Inuit tattoos”.
And she is wonderful
