My musical friend and I had got to enjoy our first Guild Night at the Virginia Opera! Pinot Noir, baklava, and a sneak preview of their Double Bill, opening tomorrow night: Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s “7 Deadly Sins,” and Leoncavalla’s “Pagliacci”

I’ve seen their dress rehearsal and know, for a fact, that this is a show to not be missed. Not to mention that opening night features a Carnivale pre-show party, with acrobats, snake charmers, and more!!!

“Stalks of Steel”

Looking upon a town from my towering perch Streets alive. To and fro - scurrying. Dense crowds, lonesome in their skulls. A furious need to build & achieve. Machine men and their construction thunder. Rare, fleeting serenity drizzled; hoping to wash. The seering sun dries it away. Clarity now simply water marks on dirty windows. Smoke stacks and chimneys climb. Thick smoke billows skyward, tainting fair winds, and blotting skyscapes. Our lives, they leave a mark. But vines of furtive ivy survive; clinging to brick, reaching sunward. Life will leave it’s mark. On a troubled day, all seems composed of soot and grime. All is of which we make it. So now I sow my magic beans. This tower of steel, an inspired stalk. And I check my six for giants!

Soft winds whip around the sleeping trees. The dense clouds drifting behind the rough obelisk, forming a Confederate monument, were suffused with the same greyness as the stone they framed.

The slight scent of manure tinged the fresh air - but it didn’t really bother me. New life grew where new death lies.The skillfully-made wooden bench I’m sitting is still wet from the night’s rain. Assume what meaning you’d like, but it’s peaceful around the dead.

I think I catch a flash of lightning in my peripheral and immediately dismiss thoughts about the consequences.A sliver of emerging sunshine casts a spotlight on the names of the fallen. Above my right shoulder, seven stars are wrapped around a flagpole.

Worn by time and nature, some old stones bare the barely legible temporal boundaries of lives once lived. There families rest in the cold plots beside them; brothers, sisters, children, and grey coats lie in this history-rich earth.

Here it is; the early morning building of brightness & bustle. Wind invisibly tumbles past and, mercifully, it is still almost twenty degrees below today's forecasted high. You've heard it countless times; adoration of the serene beauty of a sunrise. To many, however, it's not actually worth an early rise. Even the roosters are a little tardy to vocalize.

One of those achey, lethargic days, where I can't drag myself from this spot to practice music. So today is a drawing day. Can you guess which type of flower this is, just from my light sketching?

Making myself some soothing night-time herbal tea: lavender, chamomile, rose, skullcap, and lemon balm.

In order to get more practice with my dip pen, I am writinf out some of my favorite short poems. "Poison Tree" by William Blake I was angry with my friend: I told my wrath, my wrath did end. I was angry with my foe: I told it not, my wrath did grow. And I watered it in fears, Night and morning with my tears; And I sunned it with smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles. And it grew both day and night Till it bore an apple bright. And my foe beheld it shine. And he knew that it was mine, And into my garden stole When the night had veiled the pole; In the morning glad I see My foe outstretched beneath the tree.
