Pride Month Profiles: Janelle Monáe

Janelle Monáe is a singer-songwriter and actress who has been active in the music industry for over a decade.

As a queer black woman, Monáe’s music is often focused on the perspective of the “other” in society. In a 2011 interview, she stated: “I speak about androids because I think the android represents the new ‘other’. You can compare it to being a lesbian or being a gay man or being a black woman… what I want is for people who feel oppressed or feel like the ‘other’ to connect with the music and to feel like, 'She represents who I am.’”

Though speculations about Monáe’s sexuality had been going around for years, she didn’t publicly label her identity until 2018, where she said that she identifies with both the bisexual and pansexual labels.
