Reading is fun
So someone told me I should post about what I like reading, since I keep talking about the library. I actually read anything. There arenāt always good looking books on the shelves, and Iām here a lot so Iāve read the stuff that originally interested me. I donāt tend to bother with family sagas and stuff like that, and crime and mystery novels are just a bit too dark when you know how fragile your existence is ā how quickly police or someone else from the streets can turn out to be one of those killers.
For the last 5 years iām working in a library, but before that I lived 8 years in Helsinki with my grandparents. I helped them a lot with their hostel in Helsinki
Youād think it doesnāt happen in real life, and maybe it doesnāt happen that often, but we never thought weād become homeless, either, right?Ā
So I prefer reading stuff set in other worlds. I read Tolkien for the first time the month I became homeless, and I sometimes get that out again just to revisit it. Sometimes comedies can be good, too: I liked Bridget Jonesā Diary. We like to laugh as much as anyone else! Iāve caught up on some classics, too, while Iāve been using the library. Iām not a big fan of Jane Austen and I really donāt get the buzz about her work, but Alexandre Dumas knew how to write a wicked adventure story.
Sometimes I read non-fiction, especially if the libraryās going to be closed for a few days and I need something to do. Iāve learnt a lot about history this way: Iām reading a book on the Tudors at the moment, and then thereās one Iāve been looking at about the American Civil War.

A community
The homeless, weāre a community, we share the same experiences, so we have the same jokes and the same stupid stories. We know what itās like and we sometimes support each other, sometimes share tips,sometimes just talk about what weād do if things were different. It can be good, shooting the shit with other people in the same situation. In the summer, it can even be nice if you can sleep out in a park or something.
Do I get to have fun?
Oh man, do I ever. I know people think that homelessness is this big pit of hopelessness, and it kind of is. Lifeās hard on the streets, and especially if youāre a woman, you never quite feel safe. Thereās always some kind of threat, whether it be the policeor other homeless people. Thereās always someone mean, someone whoāll harass you or steal your stuff or just make life harder. There are bullies among homeless people, too.
But we can have fun. I read, for example. I can only really get one book out at a time, but I get two on Saturdays in case I finish one and canāt get another till Monday. I take more care of the library books than of my blankets and stuff ā
I can always find or steal new blankets, but I canāt get back my library card once itās gone. You need an address to have access to library services, and itās not just the books: I use the computers too. One thing I used to love doing was online gambling, slot machines and stuff like that. Obviously I donāt have the money for that now, but when thereās offers on I like joining new sites and having a go. Sometimes I win a little, though itās hard to actually collect.
NEW YORK - Kang Chan, who bounced from one friendās house to another after being abandoned by his parents, wasnāt a likely candidate for a top-tier college like Harvard. No one was more surprised than the 20-year-old when he received an admission letter from the Massachusetts-based university earlier this year. His parents got divorced when he was young and he had been raised by his mother until the age of 17. When he turned 17, his father brought him to the United States from South Korea. Soon after, however, his father abandoned him and left him completely alone. Ā āI actually was not very surprised when I found out that he was leaving me behind because my parents got divorced when I was little and the reason was because my father was abusive,ā said Kang in an interview with NBC. The broadcasting company aired Kangās story titled āFrom homeless to Harvardā on June 6. Along with NBC, other major media outlets have covered Kangās success story and praised his perseverance. Kang, currently a senior at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington Station, Long Island, New York, went to live with relatives in the United States but they soon moved away, leaving him to fend for himself. For a teenager, the circumstance is sure to be daunting. But Kang tried to come to terms with it and kept seeking to make things better. āI might be scared, but Iāll do it if I need to do it, if I think that it is something that I need to do,ā Kang said on the NBC program. After being abandoned by his relatives, he had no choice but to move from one friendās house to another. Fortunately, his school friendās family took him in. The neighbors as well as his school friends helped him get through the challenging time in his life. Friends helped him get new glasses and repair his bike, his only means of transportation. He was selected a member of the National Honor Society, He also displayed an exceptional talent in music and took an active part in piano and school band. āI want to major in music and math in college,ā he said. Weāre just automatically suspected of something because weāre poor and homeless.
Police Problems
Last night, one of those problems I mentioned cropped up. There were a few of us camped out near an old statue, because itās a corner out of the wind. One guy even had a tent for shelter, one of those ones with a frame that doesnāt need to be staked into the ground, and weād managed to beg enough change that we had two cups of coffee between the six of us. It was pretty heavenly.
And then the police came. Because Iām a woman, usually theyāre not too rough with me, but they always want to move you on and because I was hanging out with the guys, they thought I might be soliciting or something. Which Iām not, because a) they wouldnāt be able to pay anyway, and b) you never know what youāll catch when you do that, and I canāt afford condoms.
They were pretty rough with the guys, and not much nicer to me. I have fingerprint marks on my wrist where one of them grabbed me, just because I was trying to gather my stuff together before they dragged us away. Youād think theyād be glad we were cleaning up the mess, but they just wanted us out of there right away.
That happens a couple of times a week at the best of times.Ā
Between 529,000 and 840,000 veterans are homeless at some time during the year.2
On any given night, more than 300,000 veterans are living on the streets or in shelters in the U.S.

U.S. photographer spent 10 years photographing the homeless ā then she discovered her dad was among them
Diana Kim, 30, first learnt about photography through her father, who at one time owned a photography studio on the island of Maui where she grew up.
But when her parents split up, she says her dad became āabsentā. She lost touch with him as she spent years living with in different places, with friends, relatives, occasionally in cars ā āroughing itā she says.
In 2003, now a photography student, Diana began a long-term photo project about the homeless people living around her.
All she knew at the time about her dad was the little her grandmother could tell her ā that his mental health had deteriorated and no one knew where he was living.
Ten years later, Diana was in Honolulu, continuing to document Hawaiiās forgotten homeless, when she made the heartbreaking discovery her dad was among them. She told NBC News the moment of realisation was ādevastatingā.

Right kind of homeless
Like, if youāre lazy, donāt let yourself become homeless. You need to keep moving, find yourself somewhere safe, and all the time thereās a chance youāre going to have to move on. In the winter, itās too cold to stay still anyway; you have to keep on going, no matter what, or youāll just freeze to death on the street. You have to find somewhere during the day to sleep, and even then, they might just kick you out.
I get online from the library, and I shower in the gym. I still have cards left over from when I had a home, and for some reason they still let me into the gym even with an expired card. So thatās how come Iām writing this, and thatās how come I look the right kind of homeless.
Anne The Homeless Woman
My nameās Anne, and Iām homeless. It sounds like one of those Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, right? Like a disease. āIām homeless.ā Iāve come down with a severe case of not having anywhere to go! Why am I homeless? Well, honestly, itās none of your business. People ask me that sometimes and sometimes Iāll give them a sob story, just hoping that theyāll feel sorry enough to give me some money or something, some kind of help.
But sometimes Iāll just be honest and tell them itās none of their business, and usually they donāt like that. But I hate the way we get judged, as if we could help that we have problems, the way people dismiss us as stupid or addicted or just ignorant or incapable in some way, or even as being lazy.
