actually idk if ive talked about it but the concept for nightlight nightmare is that it's like a killing game made up of 'reject' characters
i loosely follow the whole team danganronpa thing from v3 specifically with this killing game over the other ones i have
i like to think that the logos shown in v3 were killing games that were significant enough to be remembered and not skipped over, the rest just. didn't get that luxury because they didn't hit with every audience like the others did, up until v3 of course
nightlight nightmare, in my 'im following v3' concept, is a killing game that takes place after v3, in a world where team danganronpa still has some semblance of power on a small audience that didn't go against ending the killing games for good, likely an underground operation functioning on the dark web or something
the killing game itself is made up of characters from killing games team danganrnpa failed to host after v3 ended. they failed either because funding wasn't secured for the location/the broadcasting, they were found by another organization (like the future foundation), or they just couldn't garner enough interest to even begin the game
the issue is that they already began the kidnapping of ultimate students before the games actually started, so they just 'had' these 'actors' already, and needed to use them somehow, whiiiiiiiiich is where nightlight nightmare comes in
some of the character casts were very small because of a lack of resources or interest in the killing game concepts they were attempting to produce, meaning that they could only 'reuse' maybe 2-3 characters
for instance, hikari and yuuya (the ult superhero and ult cake decorator) were both meant to be the protagonists of their own killing games! hikari's used the acronym d.i.c.e. and yuuya's was called over the painbow. both of these names are real fangans that i planned to make on my own, hikari's being the oldest and yuuya's being the newest. i made hikari's original design in 2019 or so, and redesigned her a few years before her current design, and yuuya's design was original made in gl2 last year
i ended up canning both of the killing games because i just didn't have anything interesting to write for them and i didn't like their concepts. for example, yuuya's was named the way it was because every character had a specific colour motif that made up the entire rainbow, with a few outliers. his colour motif was orange
but, i always kept the characters in the hopes that i could use them for another killing game, and after a few other... failed concepts that i made myself, i came up with the team danganronpa idea, and made nightlight nightmare to build off of that
it quite literally encompasses all of the characters from killing games that i've abandoned, minus a few that i removed because i just. didn't like the characters both conceptually and design wise. i could very easily split up the characters into two groups of 16 with the protags i have. actually, if i did that with jun'ichi as the protagonist (like he is now), almost every character in his half of the split came from his original killing game, which nightlight nightmare turned into
but with minimal spoilers, all i can say is that i REALLY built off of the 'fangan consists of characters from failed fangans' concept for the story and the location of this fangan, and i genuinely love it
