[10:46:10] -- lackadaisyLogic [LL] began pestering dichotomousCreator [DC] at 10:46 -- [10:46:15] LL: Hey there! [10:46:47] DC: Ah, good afternoon. How are you today? [10:47:09] LL: I've been doing fairly well, though I've been more excited recently than not! [10:47:35] DC: Oh, really? Please, explain this excitement discrepancy! [10:48:23] LL: You mean you're not excited?! [10:48:33] LL: For the game, silly! [10:49:21] DC: I participate in far too many games for that to narrow it down, I'm afraid. To which game do you refer? [10:49:42] LL: Boo. I can't believe you really don't remember. [10:50:12] DC: On the contrary, I remember several things to which you could be referring. [10:50:32] LL: I'll just be blunt, then. [10:50:43] DC: ...oh, wait. Is this that Sburb thing? [10:50:51] LL: YES. [10:50:52] LL: FINALLY HE REMEMBERS. [10:51:07] LL: We've all been talking about this for like the longest time! [10:51:22] LL: And I'M the one with memory trouble. [10:51:29] DC: Well you COULD have been talking about that MMOFPSRPG thing that's coming out next month, OR the tabletop roleplaying affair that's scheduled for two weeks for now, or... [10:51:45] LL: Okay okay, I get it. [10:51:48] DC: I didn't wish to appear presumptuous with regards to your subject matter. Nevertheless, continue. [10:52:02] LL: And...sorry for freaking out there. [10:52:18] LL: But yes, I'm quite excited for Sburb! [10:52:26] DC: Quite alright. I would classify that as a "minor flip-out" at worst. [10:52:58] DC: I'll admit, Sburb has me incredibly curious. I've been through all my usual sources and then some, and information on it is ridiculously scarce. [10:53:43] LL: Really? That's something interesting. [10:53:50] LL: And kinda weird, too. [10:54:19] DC: Yeah...usually they run pre-release promotions, or someone leaks something, or they field interviews... [10:54:27] DC: The lack of hype building is...suspicious, almost. [10:54:54] LL: Think it could just be one of those promo games for a show or something? [10:55:03] LL: I've heard of that crap being pulled before. [10:56:06] DC: What, you mean it's purely to promote some show they're going to release down the track? I guess that's possible. [10:56:24] -- lackadaisyLogic [LL] changed their mood to CHUMMY -- [10:56:39] LL: I guess it doesn't matter much, but [10:56:55] LL: those games that act as teasers, or something akin to demo version of a game. [10:57:06] LL: Whatever. New game! [10:57:32] DC: Yes, I can definitely agree with you there. Hopefully it will bring something new to...whatever genre it's being released in. [10:57:41] DC: Seriously. I haven't even been able to figure THAT out. It's eerie. [10:57:47] LL: Really? [10:57:57] LL: I thought it was just an MMORPG. [10:58:23] DC: People are suggesting that, but no-one can actually provide any evidence and the developers haven't made an official statement. Whoever they are... [10:58:51] DC: (I mean, it's being developed by those "Skaianet" guys I'm pretty sure, but they're equally secretive.) [10:59:32] LL: Jeez. Barely any information on the game itself, and no promoting it or anything. [10:59:40] LL: I think you're right. [11:00:31] DC: I'd break in to the Skaianet offices for answers, but I don't even know where they are! Also the whole legality thing. [11:01:18] LL: Yes, breaking and entering is still very much illegal. [11:01:54] DC: But the point is that I can't even figure out where the development is happening! I might actually consider going down there and knocking on their proverbial door if I did. [11:03:05] DC: So if I may ask, given the total lack of hype and information, why exactly are you so excited about Sburb? [11:03:32] LL: Well, we'll be able to play this huge co-op game with each other! [11:03:34] LL: You, me, LP and VV.. [11:03:38] LL: What's not to be excited about? [11:04:18] LL: Plus, I'm really hoping Sburb's plot is pretty good. [11:04:28] DC: I suppose I'm just jaded. A lot of these co-op affairs either turn out to be beneath my attention or devolve into meaningless squabbling. Finding out that pretty much the only thing anyone knows about Sburb is that it's co-op was somewhat disappointing. [11:05:14] DC: I will endeavour to share your boundless optimism on this one, though. Hopefully we can experience the defining gaming moment of our generation together! [11:05:15] LL: Ah. Hopefully it won't be that way with this game. [11:05:26] LL: Exactly! [11:06:53] DC: Although... [11:07:02] DC: The whole timezone discrepancy could prove to be an issue. [11:07:27] LL: That... [11:07:33] LL: Actually hadn't crossed my mind. [11:09:06] DC: I'm sure it'll be fine. I'll just have to drop out of university and leech wi-fi off anywhere I can find, like some sort of Internet hobo. [11:09:14] LL: I guess we'll have to coordinate our game according to everyone's time zones. [11:09:22] LL: We won't let it come to that. [11:09:27] DC: Actually, that sounds like a better plan. Let's go with that. [11:10:26] LL: Yes, that WOULD be a better plan, as opposed to being a Wi-fi leech. [11:10:48] DC: Oh, so that concerns you more than the hobo part? I am touched by your concern for my well-being. [11:12:13] LL: Well, not havign to leech wi-fi = not having to drop out of uni, does it not? [11:12:18] LL: *having [11:13:00] DC: I suppose that's true enough. [11:13:44] DC: In unrelated news, I believe I've come up with the worst possible combat system, so naturally I'm planning to develop a game system around it. [11:14:19] LL: Are you sure it's the worst? [11:15:11] DC: Well, no. You could devise some metric to measure combat system terribleness and I'm sure this would rate above things such as "player is required to ingest their own excrement to perform attacks" and other hypothetically terrible constructs. [11:15:23] DC: But I believe it's the worst, or close to, that anyone would actually be willing to use. [11:15:49] LL: I'm certain it's not that bad. [11:15:56] LL: Have you had anyone test it? [11:16:31] DC: Let me put it this way: In order to "attack", you roll a set of dice. Your action is chosen at random by the result. There is literally no player input besides the dice roll. [11:16:41] LL: Oh. [11:16:46] LL: Okay that's kind of... [11:17:03] DC: Bad? [11:17:13] LL: I won't say bad. [11:17:21] DC: That's okay, just think it. I'll know. [11:17:30] LL: But it sounds essentially like a RNG in use. [11:18:12] DC: Well, the possible results will presumably depend on other factors like character type, environment, etc [11:18:56] LL: Doesn't really sound like combat, though. [11:19:33] DC: Well, strictly speaking, "combat" is just two or more people attacking each other. [11:19:46] LL: Oh, you know what I mean! [11:19:54] LL: Player input, I guess I should have said. [11:20:40] DC: Well, the player input comes from character setup. [11:20:48] DC: Since that determines what's available on the randomizer. [11:21:45] DC: Nevertheless, the point is to take a system that sounds or is inherently bad (despite your misgivings about the term) [11:21:59] DC: And actually construct a decently fun game around it. Restrictions breed creativity, you know? [11:22:09] LL: Ah. [11:22:19] LL: NOW I see why you're making a game out of it. [11:23:07] DC: Nevertheless, I mentioned this for a specific reason. I'm trying to construct the base system to get a feel for it, but doing it without context means I need a whole lot of completely randomized attacks (since there's no character context yet) [11:23:57] DC: I decided, in my infinite wisdom, to do randomization using a quartet of four-sided dice. "I won't need that many options, I'll be done in a jiffy!" I said, only with something more sophisticated than "jiffy". [11:24:42] DC: So now I find myself in the position of requiring 256 reasonably distinct events that could in some way be construed as an attack. Got any suggestions for "2 4 4 1"? [11:25:31] LL: Smacking someone with an object not suited for combat? [11:25:43] LL: Perhaps a book, or a...hm... [11:26:05] LL: Actually, this just came into my mind now. [11:26:10] LL: Paper shuriken. [11:26:23] DC: Hmm. "Librarian's Revenge: The first combatant to make a sound following this roll is struck by a supernaturally heavy tome." [11:26:56] LL: That's perfect! [11:27:33] DC: I might use paper shuriken for a lower roll too. I am leaning towards making those weaker attacks, it seems like the intuitive thing to do. [11:28:24] LL: Right. If we continue the trend of weapons in what can be perceived as an academic setting... [11:28:30] LL: Rulers. [11:28:38] LL: Rulers and calculators. [11:28:44] DC: Well, there isn't a specified setting. For instance, "3 1 4 1" is "Pie Barrage" [11:29:04] DC: Wait, that probably DOES count as academic. [11:29:37] DC: Nevertheless, I already have "Number Crunch" and "Purple Meters" for those two. [11:30:16] LL: Curses, foiled again. [11:30:18] DC: Perhaps some sort of overly soporific lecture? I have experienced my share of those... [11:30:58] DC: Yes, "1 4 4 2" shall be "Calculus Lecture". [11:31:43] DC: In any case, thank you for your assistance. [11:32:13] LL: Not a problem. [11:32:20] LL: Glad I could actually BE of assistance. [11:33:14] DC: Don't sound so surprised! You often have excellent ideas and new perspectives for my various game-related projects. [11:34:18] DC: If I ever complete one, I'll be sure to credit you. [11:35:56] DC: Besides, everyone understands their own unique taste in gaming. [11:36:19] DC: Even without any particular expertise, your perspective and opinions are always going to be valuable. [11:37:01] LL: Well... [11:37:02] LL: ...Thank you. [11:37:10] DC: It's one of many reasons I'm grateful for having met the three of you. Well, not "met" met, but you get the idea. [11:38:24] DC: In any case! I fear I've been monopolizing this conversation. Was there anything else you specifically wished to say? [11:38:55] LL: If anything, I'll take the time to mention that we all ought to meet one day. [11:39:27] DC: I wholeheartedly agree. I shall try to restrain myself from immediately starting up a roleplaying campaign when this happens. [11:42:47] DC: Well, I had best be off. My time isn't going to waste itself, you know! [11:43:18] LL: My apologies if it appears I wasn't entirely there, during the course of our conversation. [11:43:34] LL: And good luck with that game of yours! [11:43:37] DC: Oh, were you otherwise preoccupied? [11:43:45] LL: Indeed. [11:44:03] DC: I didn't even notice! With what, may I ask? [11:44:10] LL: That, and suddenly I've lost my excitement. [11:44:21] LL: I've been trying to clean my room. [11:44:32] DC: Lost your excitement? How so? [11:44:42] LL: You'd be amazed by what you find. [11:44:57] DC: This sounds intriguing. Do continue. [11:45:00] LL: I suppose I can liken it to coming off of a sugar rush. [11:45:24] LL: I found this old box full of books in my closet, [11:45:43] LL: I had completely forgotten some of them had even existed! [11:46:06] LL: We had Goosebumps books, The Omen, Black Beauty... [11:46:12] LL: All kinds of them. [11:46:18] DC: Anything...unusual? [11:46:39] LL: Nothing PARTICULARLY out of the blue. [11:46:55] LL: You? [11:47:54] DC: Life remains entirely ordinary, I regret to report. Although my computer has taken to producing some bizarre glitchy behaviour as of late... [11:48:08] LL: Such as? [11:48:30] DC: Well, I'll be browsing around the net (something you may be surprised to hear I do quite a lot) [11:48:50] DC: And the screen will start flashing this weird magenta colour with glitched out squares all over it. [11:49:09] DC: Usually this just locks out all my input methods and the computer crashes or requires a restart. [11:49:32] LL: That's really weird. [11:49:45] LL: The only thing that sounds similar to that, that I've experienced [11:49:47] DC: However, on the occasions I can get the web browser minimized, a couple of "phantom shortcut" things appear on the desktop. [11:49:59] LL: was when my whole screen was messed up and had a whole cluster of stuck pixels. [11:50:14] LL: Phantom shortcuts? [11:50:41] DC: They're like shortcut arrows with no icons that don't do anything when clicked. Oh, and if the screen flashes while the desktop is visible, I'd swear some sort of face appears on it. That's probably just me being weird though. [11:51:10] LL: Face, you say? [11:51:21] LL: What do you think it looked like? [11:51:47] DC: Yes. Well, more like a face-shaped blob. I couldn't really tell particularly well... [11:52:00] LL: That's really creepy. [11:52:04] LL: Think it might be a virus? [11:52:07] DC: For some reason I want to say "amphibious", but that doesn't seem right when I think about it. [11:52:23] DC: I doubt it's a virus. I scanned the living daylights out of everything I could find after the first time and nothing came up. [11:52:46] DC: If it is, whoever put it there went to a lot of effort to be mildly annoying. [11:57:09] DC: I just opened my browser again, incidentally, so if I disappear, you'll know "Mystery Face" got me. [12:01:45] LL: Got it. [12:03:17] LL: Well, I suppose I'll talk to you later about all of this? [12:03:49] DC: Yes, that sounds like a plan. My time has miraculously gone unwasted long enough, I suspect. Farewell!
