I spent the (hospitality) weekend working at a restaurant in which I was formerly the sous chef, refining all my old recipes to be both more cost-effective and more delicious, & caught up with one of my favourite waiters from a restaurant across the square. went to a really beautiful local market on Sunday & had a lovely conversation with some former coworkers & reconnected with the owner of an incredibly expensive wine bar & found a new potential supper club avenue. I really really would like to find a career beyond hospitality but it’s good to remember that there is scope for development & fun there

I do feel like my dignity is violated whenever I work on an income-based funding application because every time it boils down to saying “I think my work is great but more importantly I have developed three different respiratory problems in my mid-twenties from working in kitchens and only you 🫵🏽 can stop them worsening”. like I’m very resistant to articulate the disabling nature of restaurant work to myself, let alone people whose only jobs for their entire lives have been desk-based research

and I'm sorry to say this but it's the last year it'll be true so I'm going to anyway: it is so ego-boosting when people ask me whether I've defended yet & I get to say that I've not yet graduated from my undergraduate degree

having an unexpectedly nice conference considering the game of chicken I was playing with my paper-writing. I was walking to a session thinking how nice it would be to catch up with my first ever medieval history professor, who is now a very distinguished and busy person, and not even a full minute later I bumped into him and he invited me for coffee. I've met so many people whose work I've been circling for the past year & had really generative conversations already & we're not even two days in yet. & you would not believe the lore I've learned...
