Meet Diego Boneta, Your Brand-New Scream King
The actor and singer talked to Teen Vogue about what it's like being a part of Ryan Murphy's universe.
Diego Boneta is used to playing the straight man. In Rock of Ages, he plays wide-eyed Drew, who’s just trying to make it as a musician amidst the craziness of the ‘80s rock world. (Tom Cruise insisted upon having a monkey as a costar in that movie, lest you forget). And hardworking Alex, his character on Pretty Little Liars, rolled with the punches A kept sending his girlfriend Spencer and her friends. But while he’s playing yet another normal character on Scream Queens, out tomorrow, he doesn’t mind it.
“I feel like my character is more grounded character. All these characters are heightened and over-the-top and, and Grace, (played by Skyler Samuels) and I... we kind of ground the storyline. Our characters are there to push the storyline along and to reveal more clues about who's involved and all these murders and who the murderer is,” he says, though he admits that just because he might play an integral role in the storyline, that doesn’t mean he’s so certain about his future — and this is before the show’s even aired. “I don't think I've ever enjoyed shooting so much in my life, because no one knows if we're going to get killed or not, so literally we're treating every scene like it's our last scene,” he added, of shooting the new project in New Orleans.
Yet not even the humidity of a Louisiana summer can get Diego down about working with Ryan Murphy, the mastermind behind the show. “You have to be careful what you say around him because then he'll somehow magically make it to the script,” Diego says of Ryan. “It’s just awesome to work with him because you kind of get a sense of how his brain works. He has all these great ideas that are just at first kind of weird and out there, but he turns them into trends.”
And though he couldn’t give any spoilers of the show away, he had nothing but praise to say of his costars. “Emma, she's great. She's so amazing on the show, and the scenes that we've had together — it's been a lot of fun. Lea as well. She's hilarious on it.” The two actresses are Ryan Murphy veterans — Emma Roberts has a few seasons of American Horror Story under her belt, and Lea Michele became a household name thanks, in large part, to Glee, so they must be able to roll with the boss’s punches, and give Diego some pointers along the way.
“Right now I just want to learn as much as possible and be surrounded by the best people I can be surrounded with so I can just learn from them, whether it's a TV show, or a movie, or theater, or singing,” he says, referring not just to the Rock of Ages soundtrack, but also to his first career as a singer in his native Mexico. And if you thought that a thrilling new TV show was enough to keep anyone busy, Diego will be releasing his first single on October 16 — something he’s really excited about.
He's looking at it as “kind of like my return to singing. I know a lot of general market audience members, they have no idea I'm a singer, they just saw me sing in Rock of Ages. That's kind of cool to be introduced and also reminded to Latin audience as a singer but acting is also something that's very present in my life. Doing both is hard because they're completely different careers and they operate in a different way.” It seems like Ryan Murphy isn’t the only person who’s five steps ahead. And Ryan, if you’re reading this — please don’t kill Diego off quite yet.
