It's memories of that emotional and curious man that keep Jayce here, he's certain of it at this point. For all his talk of the future, the defender lost himself in the past more often than not. It was easier most days, when there was nothing to tether him to it, and difficult whenever he thought of Viktor in any regard. His eyes linger as the other man's head turns, where scarflesh and porting is usually hidden behind Viktor's wild hair.
Distaste lingers in his throat. But, Jayce swallows it back. Now isn't the place to raise a fuss about possible augmentation, how the idea of it is still insane (and frightful) to him. He wonders what Viktor's done to himself now, wonders what other pieces he's stripped away in pursuit of an ideology.
It puts the most gentle of cracks in it all, to hear Viktor's recollection of events. His jaw draws too taut, teeth pressed together so tightly that Jayce considers for a moment that the bone might crack. It's true, that he dislikes crowds, even now, especially now, considering the reaction his being spurns from most average folk. And it's true, that the truth hurts, but the way Viktor tells it reminds him of a lingering bitterness.
(I'm happy to see you because I miss you. You're not really the you I knew before, though, are you?)
"Sorry. Again." Jayce smiles, he was never good at smiling and even now it doesn't really reach his eyes. It's more like a show of teeth, saccharine and done on command to flatter people who point him out, Jayce never liked smiling. He had little reason to for others, "Was the explanation going to come after I died?" It's callous, the words are harsher than he'd like them to be, a faltering moment of relapse, "Or were you going to pitifully confess what you were doing while I was in the process of it? You had plenty of time to do that."
Then, like he never spared that moment of weakness at all, Jayce straightened up, hands resting atop his hips, "I said that, didn't I? I wouldn't have asked if you needed help if I wasn't offering it."
