Itâs almost as if you did not read the piece at all.  Did you read beyond the title?  If you did, and this is all you derived from it, thatâs just⊠sad.  I honestly donât mean that in an insulting way.  I mean thatâs the word and feeling I arrive at.  I donât think I see a passage where the author states that widespread harassment and sexual assault are not a problem..?  Iâm so confused. Â
The fact that the author notes that the #MeToo movement has morphed into a conversation about the unscripted sexual advance, or spontaneous displays of desire doesnât make the fact that it has also been used to hold men of power accountable for their behavior suddenly untrue..? Â These two assertions can exist simultaneously. Â You said reckonings are messy (no-one would dispute that) and the author seems to be addressing that exactly..? Â By âaddressing thatâ I mean addressing the fact that this conversation continues to evolve, and it brings up questions that are worth seriously thinking about. Â
Not to get completely off-topic but I wonder if this type of reaction is you rejecting an interpretation that does not fit the âbrandâ you have in mind.   What I mean by that is #MeToo is visually easily recognizable (like a logo) and people want it to evoke a specific feeling and they want its meaning to be streamlined (this is an understandable want); theyâve even developed an aesthetic/dresscode for it.  Perhaps all this makes it difficult to engage with it as a concept that is malleable and not easily digestible.  Iâm just âthinking aloudâ here trying to understand how you could have such a different reading of the piece. Â
For those of you who view desire as something endlessly (& excitingly!) tricky, and sometimes uncomfortable to think about, but absolutely worth thinking about, considering closely (going beyond 280 characters and hashtags), I would still recommend the article.
Towards the end of the article, the author uses a Wolfgang Tillmans image of folks at a nightclub to bring us as readers to a difficult question:  How do we transcend our separateness as human beings in a way that does not reduce our interactions to transactions?  Â
If the only appropriate place for this sort of discussion to happen is on Fox News⊠well, I honestly donât know what to say to that.  Again, I arrive at a feeling of sadness.  To think that such questions are ânot worth consideringâ (and I didnât even suggest agreement, only mere consideration!)⊠ sigh⊠it feels anti-art, maybe even anti-human.  Â
I wish there was a space where these difficult questions could be grappled with in a way that is thorough and nuanced.  This is one of the many reasons why I minimize my time on the internet these days.  There are too many people engorged by their own outrage and offense (and maybe by the prospect of being able to corner someone with a point-of-view that does not exactly mirror their own..?), and the discussion gets reduced to a tremendously unsatisfying ejaculation (in this case âyouâre either with us or youâre against usâ).  I remember it being a little different, even just a few years ago.  Am I mistaken? Â
Iâm sorry to user âinfluxsnuxâ for focusing on our interaction specifically to speak of a more broad phenomena. Â I actually donât have much of a desire to antagonize. Â Iâm just confused, but ultimately fine with acknowledging we are on very different wavelengths and leaving it at that. Anyways, Duchamp suggested that the great artist of tomorrow will go underground.  Iâm still digging to find these artists and thinkers who are operating outside of the mainstream, outside of the monoculture (is this possibility viable?  Perhaps only outside of this virtual space?  Where is the alternative?), who are eager to engage with âdangerousâ ideas, to take them apart, to be truly critical.  In the meantime, I am watching, and quiet.  Offline. Â
