Hahaha. I forgot to post this. MY FIRST BURN. Such a big deal. Lol.
Far from done.
It's been awhile since I've gone full retard for an original character. Despite being a WIP, I'm pretty proud of how this turned out already. However, I can't help but feel worry when it's time to finally clean up and ink this.
SO MUCH DIAPER FOLD IN THIS ENSEMBLE HA HA HA.

Taking a break from Mahou Shoujo Sakura because it turned for the worse for the moment.
Working on another OC, one I actually HAVE emotional attachment to.
Saw some old art and thought why the hell don't I redraw this? So I did. This time I had reference. DESIGNDOLL ILY. -endorses with intensity-
I...looked at the old references that went with the outfit and realized I had no direction whatsoever with the overall look. Damn. I'm going to have to redesign from scratch then. (So I did!)
Also, I found out recently owing to readings on demonology that Oria/Orias/Oriax is a name of a demon from the Lesser Key of Solomon. :| Coincidence much this demon's jurisdiction is a bit similar to the attributes and capabilities that this muse of mine has. Creepy. I may have to rename him I suppose. I feel uncomfortable with this fact. D:
It's really weird how I use the same female body template even for male character designs. -cackles- But I can't be assed to make a new one so whatever. xD
Some really old art I managed to unearth from the pile of stuff I have hidden away. I was literally on a feels train thanks to these. I still remember I had wanted to make bookmarks from these but it never happened because of my mindset back then. I was... unconfident and easily swayed by the opinions of others.
Looking back, I daresay I had 'something' but never realized it.
I will definitely redraw if not get back on these.
These vocaloid song refs are SO old. lol.
Been meaning to do a redesign of this particular OC who was created for the sake of being entered into a contest very many years ago. However, I never managed to make it in time and thus this design was shelved indefinitely. The contest had sole ownership of the entries, whether or not they placed or not so I made sure I didn't get too attached to the design because rightfully so, I wouldn't be able to use them for personal purposes anymore if ever.
To this day, I still am not that that attached to this design either but for sake of completion and practice, here I am.
If I remember right, this was supposed to be a magical girl type character with a sakura flower motif. I never quite liked the original look I came up with honestly. Things started off as somewhat sakizou inspired, eventually simplified to it's more current look.
I kinda like it, but I also don't at the same time.
But this looks functional enough. Will do the inking and character details later on.
MORE PROGRESS PICS.
The flowers look like candy c; Or chocolate. I’m hungry.Â
Posting photos because eh, I burned my finger and cracked my skin so bad. I’ll puase and rest from it to help let my skin rest for a while.Â
I’ve had 2 glue guns explode in my face while working on this. lol. omg.
Some more progress shots. Can't decide if i like darker outer bud quarters or not. They both look great to me somehow. Maybe I should make both and mix&match when need be. Not sure if ill include the green outer guards for all the flowers for this project, but i like the contrast and color it adds when theyre all together! So shiny under yellow lighting! @_@ Cant help but worry theyre gonna look awful in natural lighting ;; Nonetheless, I have a huge mission accomplished feeling right now.
Took a break to do more research since while I felt I had captured the look ad feel I was after, there was still something 'mising'.
I realized that the roses I was emulating the entire time was wrong.
At first sight, I was like oh, so it's a pale pink rose that melts into white against a soft green dress. I didn't see or understand this logic but well, that's the ref. I did wonder why that was so... Later research would soon reveal that there are real flowers that DO have that same palette and that the design Sakizou drew Princess White Rose in emulates that.
Armed with that knowledge, I had to change the colors I had (though really... why did I pick up coral anw? :V) and the mindset for this project.
I cannot express in words how giddy I am right now with what I've come up with. I feel so CLOSE to what I'm aiming for! I'll have to do some adjustment here and there but I AM SO CLOSE.
omg. omg. omg.
PS: those real life rose photos ain’t mine :V those were taken from google that I saved on a spree and I forgot to note their sources. NOT MINE!!!
Does someone know the source for this?
As in where was this published on.
._.
So in my boredom, I hotglued all my roses so far, both the uglies and not to see how it would look.
If I can get it all done, not bad.Â
Problem is, I've already managed to cover like 1/3 of the trial base (Coz I only had enough for 1/3...) and it's already DAMN heavy. I laid it upon my head and whimpered at the weight already.
OH BOY. This will be not fun.
Bright side is, I sorta estimated the right amount of large blooms for the head right. BOOYAH.
Tried out doing thins ombre. It's not exactly what I was aiming for but I feel pretty close. xD
I may have to try out handpainting. I still find the transition from pink/corals to ivory/off white not very smooth just yet.
That aside, I'm loving how my assembly skills have gotten really nice. 8)
I have officially gone full retardo for this project.
Gonna attempt to make an ombre rose. Hopefully this will be closer to what I want to achieve. Also, I am sad that all the petals I prepared in stark white will be of no use anymore since I think I will shift to off-white instead. Or I don't know. We shall see how this experiment will turn out.
That aside, I found the most gorgeous lace.
WITH ROSE MOTIFS.
It totally called out to me.
Not sure where I chanced upon this but ah, new reference pic.
I feel so utterly frustrated. XD
Like super.
So far every cosplay I want to do involves flowers.
The worse part is that these flowers don't come in the colors or sizes that I want them to be so I have to handmake them. Nah, actually the worse part is I don't wanna suck it up and compromise on the accuracy of the colors, shapes and sizes.
Let's say roses for example. Breeds matter. Breeds dictate the fullness, shape and colors possible. It may seem like they all look the same but they do not. Nope. NOOOPE. Also, there's the art style you have to consider. Artists draw their roses a certain way: realistic or cartoony, so you also need to take that into consideration. So there's really no one size fits all. You may have to engineer/reference procedures to create the flowers that you feel will work the best.
...so far, I've found that the flowers I've managed to work out for White rose won't work for Caroline and that saddens me because that means I will forever be on the trial stage it seems. 8')
Then when you’re there...Â
1. Candles matter. THEY FUCKING DO. The best candles for doing singed edge flowers is a low but steady flame. The slow burning and shorter your wick, the better to keep the flame constant. If you’re using cheap candles that burn quickly or have long wicks, you’ll have to keep cutting the wick short every now and then.Â
2. The kinds of fabric to work with matters much as well. THE THICKER THE BETTER. ALWAYS THE THICKER THE BETTER. The best fabric are those satin ribbons by the meter but meh, that’s expensive in the long run when you need to make like... 40-60pcs (THE MASOCHISM IT REEKS) and it’ll actually be cheaper if you buy them by the meter. Find satin that’s closest in texture and thickness with those satin ribbons. I’ve found that expensive satin =/= good satin. :/ The one I am most fond of using is the cheapest shit possible around here and it’s the satin I keep going back to for my projects.Â
3. TEMPLATE SHAPE MATTERS. Slight change in size can really make a diff. I’m still here, exploring the horrors of it all.Â
4. FULLNESS...is dependent on how many petals you use OR how you assemble your flowers. You’d be surprise one tute asks you to use 7-15 petals to achieve the same fullness as another that will require 30. 8D Sometimes both?
5. The core of your rose is very important. It dictates the final shape/fullness of your project. some roll/fold their center. Some use foam, styrofoam or aluminum eggs. (I use felt eggs personally...)
6. If you're anal retentive or with some OCD tendencies, bear in mind if you're aiming for a natural looking flower, there is no such thing as 'balanced' or 'even' looking. Only fake flowers are balanced looking because their petals are counted off.
In reality, most flowers operate like a spiral with weird petal counts so it can't be avoided that there will be a 'heavier' side'. The heavier side is where most of the petals are concentrated. If you want to 'balance' it out, you set it beside another flower with their lighter sides facing each other so the heavier side is facing out. In some tutes, you'll notice that there are smaller flowers or buds that compliment the largest flower. This is to 'compliment that heavier side. = w =
So if you ARE anal retentive and can't stand the natural/imbalanced look, go for those tutes that have fixed petals per layer (usually they're star shaped types) than a petal by petal style UNLESS you can keep each layer of petals consistent. (GL WITH THAT)
EDIT: The tutes I’ve found online in whatever language never tell you these. Maybe because it’s pretty obvious but yes these things do matter (at least what I’ve found out so far...) and really make a difference to the end product. While I suppose they’re like ‘duh’ facts, sometimes there’s a need to emphasize/show that this is the real case/deal.Â
-cry-
On the bright side, I can brag about how I made them when asked by judges or onlookers rather than say I BOUGHT EVERYTHING.
Gods, cosplayers are giant masochists. HUGE BULBOUS AND PUTRID MASOCHISTS.
(Oddly enough, this 'masochistic tendency' doesn't extend to other parts of my life... Just cosplay. 8V)
As I suspected...
My work would really be all in vain in the end. HA HA HA.Â
I have prepared enough petals for 15-19 flowers only to decide after 75% have been made ready that I will not push through using pure white flowers.
HA HA HA.
Hit me.
I realized that the flowers that Sakizo has been inking on her drawings are NOT ordinary white roses but HYBRID tea roses. They have ivory/white outer petals with soft pink centers.Â
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.Â
That and I really have no idea how real roses are supposed to look like. Roses grow here in my country yes but, they don’t grow commonly and have to be bred in special places.Â
Goddamn it. This feels like one step forward, two steps backward. Seriously.
