Visual Fiction
For this project I am going to produce a photographic tableu. Tableau refers to a “living picture.” It was hard for me to come up with ideas for this project since I have not done anything similar to this before. To begin my project, I started to look at work of some of my favourite photographers to see if I could relate to any ideas and seek for inspiration. I did some research on surrealist photographers. After I did some research I came up with an idea of dreams. I want to try to make photographs feel as if they are dreams to make a story.
Conceptual Research
Gregory Crewdson (born 1962)
-Tableaux, realis landscape photographer -Photographed American homes and neighbourhoods
Crewdson was the first photographer I took a look at who did tableau photography. His photographs feel like a movie scene. You may not even think that everything in the picture has been planned. What really caught my attention in his pictures was the feeling of loneliness.
In this picture there is only one car in the whole street, maybe this shot was taken during night when nobody was around.
In his pictures Crewdson does not photograph people that much. Although that is what I wanted to focus on in my project.
This is one of his photographs that I really enjoy. The creepy mood that is felt when looking at a picture makes it feel like this is a scene from a film or a dream. Creating a feeling like it’s a scene from a film or a dream is what I would like to focus on in my projects.
Sandy Skoglund (born 1946)
-American photographer -Creates surrealist images adding furniture and other objects to them
In her photographs, Skoglund uses a few objects to help her accomplish what she wants to show. Nowadays, it is easier to plan such photograph with the help of Photoshop.
In the photograph it feels like the boy just woke up but is still dreaming or he may have woken up in his dream.
Her photographs look surreal and do not look like reality. They do make you feel like it’s a dream or a scene from a fiction film.
This is another picture of Skoglund that has caught my eye. The three ladies in the photograph are the same person which makes it look unrealistic. Maybe these are the actions of a woman waiting for someone to come home.
Kyle Thompson (born 1992)
-American photographer -Mostly known for his surreal self-portraiture. He is a young photographer. The first time I discovered his photographs was on Facebook.
In his photos like Skoglund, Thompson uses the same objects in different places to make his photographs look more surreal.
This is one of his more famous work produced. I like the way he planned this image. It gives the viewer wonder what has happened in this area and why there are only two people left in this place. This photograph also makes it feel as if this is happening in a dream.
I want my project to make the viewers think and question about what has happened.
Another photograph by Thomson has attracted my attention. In this image, there is a person laying down on the grass between all the plants while all of this is between the walls. It makes it look unrealistic. It is not usual for the plants to grow on the floor in a house.
The person is sleeping which made me thing about dreams again. This may be happening in a person’s dream, as if he fell asleep and is going to wake up in a surreal place.
Tommy Ingberg (born 1980)
-Swedish photographer and visual artist -Creates minimalistic and self-reflecting surreal photo montages.
When I was looking for artists for my project. The first time I discovered this artist was online when I searched for photographers who do surreal photography. When I took a look at his works I could relate to them with the topic of my project being dreams.
Laura Williamson (born 1996)
-English surrealist photographer -I discovered her on Flickr and her work has inspired me, I always wanted to try to play around with Photoshop and produce surreal works.
These photographs made it feel like the person is in a dream. The fact that the girl in the photos is sleeping in a forest creates a surreal view.
