This page is to help students and teachers explore the topic of endangered and extinct species.

Are you looking to do a project on a specific endangered animal? Scroll through to begin to spark some ideas and get some basic information about various animals.

In this page, we introduced several endangered/extinct animals including giant panda, sharks, elephant & etc. In the following page, you will get to know these animals from aspects of their significance to the ecosystem, what factors caused the decrease in their population and what actions we have taken to prevent them from extinction.

There is also a wide range of videos, books, website links, information posters, images, and other sources presented. We have included a few interviews of our students from different grades to give you an idea of how much information is known.

You are welcome to send us a recording of what you’ve enjoyed from this page and feel free to send us links to add more! The more information, the better it is for raising awareness on this global issue. It is important to protect biodiversity for many reasons.

Rhinos?

Rhinoceros, or rhinos, are part of the “odd-toed ungulates” family. There are five types of rhinos: White rhinoceros, Black rhinoceros, Indian rhinoceros, Javan rhinoceros, and Sumatran rhinoceros. Two species of rhinos live in Africa (White rhinoceros and Black rhinoceros) and three in Southern Asia (Indian rhinoceros, Javan rhinoceros, and Sumatran rhinoceros).

Endangered?

The Javan and Sumatran rhinos are critically endangered. The African Black and White rhinos are now extinct in the wild. They are both now thriving in protected sanctuaries.

Why?

Rhinos are endangered for two reasons: they are being hunted for their horn(s), and for the destruction of their natural habitat. Rhinoceros horns are used in traditional medicines in parts of Asia, and for dagger handles in Yemen and Oman.

What can we do to help?

Raising awareness is always helpful. Discouraging the production of rhino based objects by not purchasing any.

A Siberian Tiger is a critically endangered animal which means that they are in danger of becoming extinct in the immediate future. -Avnika Adlakha

Tigers are ferocious, elegant and beautiful creatures. Can you imagine a world with out some of your favourite animals? We truly do not want to. It is our duty as creatures on this planet to try to protect all living things. We must protect species as if they were our own. We need to collaborate with other living beings to have a harmonious life shared on Earth. To have peace with nature would be amazing. We believe that children and adults both have equal power in making a difference.

Children sometimes see the world differently than how adults see it. We want to capture their thoughts on extinct animals and see where they have acquired their knowledge. This interview shows that there could be more discussion in schools about this topic (endangered species).

Although not listed as endangered by any Australian state, the koala population has been devastated over the last century. They are currently under great threat due to urbanization and massive, uncontrolled habitat destruction.
