happy thanksgiving 2016

it seems to me that thankfulness always has a retrospective element. even if you say you're thankful for the present moment, it still presupposes a past, a getting-here. in turn, retrospection is possible because of time, causation, and the awareness of the two. so, then, an essential part of thanksgiving is following the path of time and causation in the reverse direction, recognizing what or who played a part in bringing about a particular state. what if we followed that reverse direction all the way in time to the very beginning? did it start somewhere? did it start with someone? (a smart guy named thomas aquinas had a few things to say about that.)

... of course, this exercise isn't enough. because you could easily replace the word "thanksgiving" with "blaming," no?  :)
