My stepbrother Rashad got on my last nerve. He was only a few months older than me, yet he treated me like I was some pesky annoying little stepbrother. Our parents—my mom and his dad—got married in 2003 and for a little while, Rashad put on an act like he was happy to have me as a stepbrother. By 2008, he was treating me like shit and picking on me all the time because I was small and skinny and didn’t play football for our high school like him. Since he was popular and had friends, he was rarely home which was fine with me. However, when he was home, he made sure to mess with me.
“Where’s my camera?” I asked him as I stood in his doorway.
“Boy, you know not to come into my room,” he said with an attitude. “Especially when I have company over.”
“Man, chill,” said his friend Damien. “Why you gotta talk to your lil’ bro like that.”
“Step-bro,” Rashad corrected him. He then looked back at me and asked, “What the fuck do you want, Micah?”
“I want my camera. Where is it?”
He did that stupid laugh of his and lied, “I don’t know. Check your gay ass room again.”
“Rashad, don’t make me go get your dad. He’ll ground you and I know you plan on leaving to go hang out with your braindead friends, no offense Damien.”
“None taken,” Damien said while looking at his phone.
“I don’t have your camera, Micah,” Rashad lied. “Sorry. You can go get my dad all you want, but I don’t have your camera.”
“I don’t have your fuckin’ camera! Now get the fuck out of my room, man! Shit!”
“Alright, fine. Just know that I’m done with your shit.”
I left his room but stayed out in the hallway because I heard Damien ask him, “What did you do with his camera for real?”
After a moment of silence, Rashad laughed and told him, “I got it hidden in my closet. I’m gonna use it to tape me and Tamika fuckin’ this weekend while my parents are out of town.”
When I heard him say that, it was like a fuse went off inside me. I was already coming up with a plan as I headed back to my room. My digital camera was a gift from my real dad that past Christmas and Rashad had no right taking it without my permission. I was fed up with his bullshit after that and I had to get him back. He always called me a nerd and a loner, but he had no idea what I was capable of. I was into things neither he nor our parents knew about.
