“Oh mine too. They didn’t used to be but I’m so obsessed with them at this point I don’ know what it is about this year but I just love them.” Isabelle nodded, “There wasn’t a kennel or something you could drop them at for the weekend?”

"I watch those constantly in December—that and Nightmare Before Christmas. I used to be totally obsessed as a kid,” Dinah confessed with a laugh that faded into a more content hum. “No, no. They all need extra care for one reason or another and I’d feel bad dropping that many on a kennel that probably aren’t equipped to handle them, y’know? My parents understand.”

“I’m almost excited to go home for Christmas. Even if it’s just a few miles away sometimes that seems like a whole other town and all of those Hallmark movies that I’ve been watching lately say that’s where and when I’ll finally meet my true love.” Isabelle looked over at the toddler playing with his truck, “That also means he’s supposed to teach the guy the spirit of Christmas, but I’m not entirely sure how he’ll pull that off when all his sentences sound like pig latin.”

A laugh was startled out of Dinah, oddly endeared. “God, those Hallmark movies are such a guilty pleasure of mine,” she muttered, not quite embarrassed even if she thought she probably should be. “I’ve got too many dogs to take care of to go home for Christmas, but that’s ‘cause my parents live on the other side of the country. We’ll probably, like... skype or something though.”

“If it wasn’t my mother I was talking about, I’d probably say no,” Asher admitted with a bit of a shrug. “It just baffles me that she even had children to begin with. You’d think that after almost three decades of being aware that our relationship was different from other parent-to-kids, I’d be used to it. It’s so back and forth with her moods, a never-fucking-ending ping pong match.” He scoffed, and shook his head at himself. “Some of it I can’t blame her for, but some of it I definitely can.”

Dinah scrunched her nose up with a sympathetic wince. She was lucky in that regard—her parents did nothing but shower her with all the love they could give. She decided that asking why their relationship was so out of the norm would be pushing it a little. “I can’t imagine,” she admitted. “You sound pretty patient, if you’re putting yourself through this over and over again. I would’ve quit by now.”

Asher had both arms resting on the table he was sat at, fingers tapping against his glass. He glanced over at the person next to him, about to speak before he stopped and took another slow sip. Finally, he shoved it away and sighed. “Have you ever had a conversation with someone and wondered why they make it absolutely impossible to connect with them?” he mused out loud, still staring down at his hands. “Then they go ahead and make you feel like a shitty son for trying to reach out to them. Sometimes I wonder why I waste my energy, you know?”

Dinah offered up a bit of a sympathetic grin—sympathy was about all she could offer up, since she figured she was typically the one making it impossible to connect with. “Is it worth it?” She paused, then decided maybe she should say a little more than that. “Trying and being made to feel like that, I mean. There’s no shame in not putting yourself through something shitty like that over and over again.”

"Sure, go ahead,” Dinah answered without hesitation, looking up when it really settled in what had been asked of her. That combined with the obvious anxiety written all over his face was concerning enough for her to figure out how to ask if anything shady was going on without outright saying those words. “Is everything okay?”
