“Insta jail? Is that a thing people get done to them?” he mused, raising a curious eyebrow. “I mean… Daphne basically rules my house, I don’t think she’s going anywhere any time soon and she isn’t even fully grown yet. How did I let myself fall in love with such a demanding little demon puppy?”

“Absolutely. People are idiots on all platforms.” He rolled his eyes. “She’s fucking adorable, that’s how. That’s how animals work, my friend. Just be glad she loves you enough to not eat and piss on all your belongings.”

“Chef,” he answered with a smile. Asher, he noted, and then it clicked. “Oh fuck me, you’re Isabelle’s brother, aren’t you? No fuckin’ wonder you looked so familiar. Now I look like a proper idiot for not being able to tell right away.” He did feel a bit embarrassed at that, but there wasn’t much else to say. He groaned, so much for a good first impression. “Sounds like a good plan, mate. She’s so tightly wound, I’d love a chance to go home an’ rest too.”

Asher just grinned, rolling his eyes. “We look basically identical, man. Other than our eyes, of course.” He couldn’t help but laugh at the other man’s distress, pressing a hand to his shoulder to placate him. “Relax, dude. I’m not judging you. It’s nice to meet you. My sister never shuts up about you.” It wasn’t really true, but who was he as the older brother to not tease when the opportunity arose? “She’d love that, I’m sure. Send her off in a hot air balloon never to return.”

“I literally can live on three hours of sleep, which is probably extremely unhealthy, but midnight shift and kids don’t always blend together. When they come home from school and daycare, I want my time with them before I go to work. It’s rough, but hopefully I can be back on day shift soon. Just waiting for the request to be approved takes so long.”

“I know that feeling all too well. I felt like I was losing my mind constantly on night shift, it was miserable but fun. Sleeping during the day is such an unpleasant dichotomy, I don’t know how people can do it consistently. I don’t know how I did it without feeling like I was losing my shit.” He shook his head and chuckled. “Kids make it worth it, though. I’d give up sleep for a week if it meant my daughter was happy.”

“But she’s okay.” Isabelle reminded Asher for probably the hundredth time. Isabelle was very glad that Sophia’s mother wasn’t around. She had never been a fan and Isabelle could be a better mother figure to her niece than anyone else. “If you do that I’m going to end up telling her because I can’t handle that.”

“I know. Heads would roll if she was.” He rolled his eyes, and nodded. Her mother was immature, Asher stood by that and probably would forever. His kid was happy; had an amazing aunt and a cousin to spoil, all was well. “And I thought I was the impatient one of the two of us here.”

“You can keep your organs,” Molly mused with a chuckle. “I have as many as I want at my disposal, perks of working in a hospital,” she teased with a grin. “Just get a bunch of raid and diatomaceous earth. It should solve all your bug problems in no time.”

“You had me worried for a second,” Asher confessed and chuckled. “Is that something you can actually see, though? Like donated organs and shit? I don’t know how medicine or hospitals work at all, clearly. The last time I was in one was when I was born.” He made a face. “Thanks for the tips. I was leaning more toward burning my neighbor’s place down, but I suppose that’s less damaging.”

“If she’s the only one I think that’s a pretty huge accomplishment on your part. But I’m sure there are more that you’re just not thinking of.” Noelle nodded in agreement. This felt good and right and like exactly what she had been looking for. “Nah.. I’ve dated the people the media wanted me to and it has never ended well. I’d much rather be with a good person that I like.” She laughed a little. “You can, I’ve seen it.”

“I had a number one radio show for a while, people seem to have followed me from there to Youtube, I’m not involved in any scandals that involve people spilling tea about me, I’d say I’m doing pretty well.” He wrinkled his nose and laughed. “Good, because I was about to say I’m not afraid of punching another person in the face if I have to. I fight dirty, I’m huge, and I will win.” He smirked, this time finally leaning in to kiss her properly. Once he was finished, he pulled back with another, more self-satisfied smirk. “And there’s that.”

“You would think after working the midnight shift at the hospital, I would be exhausted and want to sleep. Instead, I’m in the mood to go grocery shopping and get all my things done before the kids get home from school.”

“Isn’t that the best time to do anything and everything? Even if you are exhausted, it’s always fun to use that second wind to actually be productive about something. I used to work the midnight shift every night, and I’d never be tired when I got home. I honestly pretty much hulked out and was only productive when I should have passed out on my kitchen floor. Energy works in mysterious ways.”

“I definitely don’t meet many now a day. They’re few and far between. I’m sure you’re doing a wonderful job I can’t wait to meet her.” Finally this is what they had been needing to talk about but neither of them were going to bring it up. Thank God Asher had because she as driving herself a little bit mental. “I mean.. I would say we’re dating, yeah. You’re who I like to talk to and spend time with.. I just didnt’ want to push anything and freak you out because I can be the queen of that.” Noelle settled into his side and rested her chin on Asher’s shoulder. “Plus I think I kind of like you.”

“She’s probably the only decent accomplishment I can say I’m actually proud of,” Asher mused with a shrug. “I felt kind of the same way, but it’s been long enough that I think we can safely say that,” he said, smiling wryly. “I may not be movie star material Chris Pratt like who your adoring media stalkers want you to be with, but I like to think I could take them if they came at me. I’m tall, I’m gangly, I could put up a fight.”

“Make friends with them?” Molly offered unhelpfully, chuckling at Asher’s comments. “They’re just roaches, as gross as they are. I’ve found effective methods of getting rid of them even though I’m fairly sure my neighbor is a hoarder. I’ll share, for a price.”

“That’s charming,” Asher deadpanned, rolling his eyes at Molly. His friend certainly knew how to get under his skin, after all. “What price are we talking here? My kidney and a lobe of liver? These are prime organs and I don’t have many to spare.”

“She seems like the type that can hold her own though. I don’t think anyone goes through what she has and can’t. Especially against a little kid.” Isabelle laughed. “Just have it. You’re ready, you need to see if she is and then go from there. You aren’t doing any favors by keeping quiet and honestly it’s driving me crazy.”

“Being ditched by your mother will make you into a tough cookie,” Asher said, his eyes narrowing a little. It was a touchy subject still, even six years later. He was glad the other woman was out of their lives, she’d never been a pleasant person anyway, let alone mother. “I’m going,” he said, childishly sticking his tongue out at her. “You don’t think I should let it simmer on the metaphorical crock pot for six more months?” At that point he was teasing just to driver her a little crazy.

“A wee bit of wine and some melatonin ought to be enough to curb her insanity,” Ares said with a chuckle. “Sorry ‘m a fucking arsehole, I’m Ares,” he said with a sheepish smile, and stuck his hand out for the other to shake. He couldn’t quite place why the other man looked so familiar, but he did. “What’s yours again? Have I been rude all this time and forgot to ask, or am I just fuckin’ forgetful?”

Ares? Asher raised a curious eyebrow, but didn’t point anything out just yet. He wondered if this was the guy Isabelle had been talking about. “It’s all good man,” he answered with a smile, and shook his hand. “I’m Asher. That’s a good suggestion, can you send her a gift basket with both or maybe just hit her on the head with a giant inflatable mallet? You know, not enough to do damage, but enough to knock her out for a couple hours. Maybe you could get some work done, then.” He grinned. “What exactly is your job?”

“I wouldn’t go that far,” he mused, rolling his eyes as his friend’s comments. “Seriously, you know me better than that. I can’t really help what people have latched onto.” It was true his feed had morphed from pictures of himself looking dorky and his dog to more professional shots, but he wasn’t sorry about showing off his work. “I got advised to try to be more alluring or some bullshit. Sometimes all of this is exhausting.”

“I would.” He grinned, rolling his eyes. “What does that even mean? Are you supposed to post more pictures of your junk or sexy modeling shots or nip slips that’ll get you put in insta-jail?” he wondered out loud, snorting. “I say stick with the dogs. It’s more true to who you are.”

“I love that.. really I wish more people thought like that.” Noelle nudged Asher before setting into his side and letting the closeness bring her comfort. “Mine weren’t either I think that’s why I love seeing good ones. It means they’re a good person at their core and that’s all I look for in a person.. well mostly.” She looked up at Asher with a grin. “Fine but no that you don’t have to.”

He nodded. “It would be easier if the world was on the same page, but alas, most of us are idiots.” He smiled. “I feel the same way. Good people seem hard to come by these days now, and it’s my one goal. To raise another good one.” He bit his lip and shrugged a bit. “I know it’s not always easy, dating someone with a kid. I’ve kind of been skirting around it because I didn’t want to pressure you but I realize if we don’t, we might be stuck in this stupid limbo forever.” He grinned sheepishly. “I mean that is what we’re doing, isn’t it? Unless you count our numerous dates as ‘just hanging out’.” He did the air quotes, draping an arm around her so she’d know he was mostly poking fun.

Noelle was hoping for a kiss she wouldn’t lie, but if Asher wasn’t there she was never the type to be forward. Not anymore, that part of her had long gone. “Well  she’s a girl who isn’t down for any bullshit you have to kind of admire that. She’s not going to take any shit from anyone in her life.” Noelle chuckled, “Well I love kids and people who are good parents.. it’s something that I really, really like and find attractive too so.” Noelle shrugged, “You don’t need to worry about that.”

“Honestly, I’m a fan. Strong women are basically what made me the way I am, so I’m here to empower them, even if it involves cleaning up barbies all the time.” He made a face and chuckled. “All I can ask for is being a good parent. Mine weren’t the best, so if I can do it over in my own life, I’m happy.” He smiled at her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “Say that all you want, but I’ll probably do it anyway.”

“Well that’s good then! And Noelle is so sweet with kids, Soph will love her.” Isabelle sighed. “It’s all about communication. You just need to be honest with her about where you’re at and where you want to go at some point and figure out where she is too. That’s all you can do.”

“As long as Soph keeps her newfound sass to herself, that is,” he said, and raised a pointed eyebrow at his sister. “I do wonder where she got that from.” He rolled his eyes, nodding. “We should probably have that talk. I’ve been dancing around it for a while because I didn’t want to push her, but I ended up being the one who needed it instead. Go figure.”

Noelle grinned and leaned over to give Asher a little kiss, a thank you for the conversation and a good promise for the future. She chuckled, “Well pink is one of my favorites so at lest we won’t be starting out that relationship on a lie.” At his proposal, Noelle raised an eyebrow. She didn’t expect Asher to offer up a meeting with his daughter on top of this whole conversation, but Noelle nodded quickly. “Yeah! Yeah, I’d love that. I’d love to meet her.”

Asher smiled, leaning over to plant a kiss on Noelle’s cheek. A part of him was a little irritated he hadn’t actually just kissed her yet, but he was doing his best to be respectful and take things slow. “Thank god for that. Trust me, she’s a human lie detector. Just recently she yelled at me for telling her that Santa was a real. She figured it out a lot earlier than I was hoping,” he said with a weak chuckle. “Good. I’m glad you do, because I was worried this would be awkward otherwise.”

“She’s a right fuckin’ nightmare,” he groused, scowling as he threw one hand up in the air. “She can’t seem to get it through her thick skull that no one even likes jellied eel, ‘specially in America, and that don’t fucking need a remoulade on everything.” He angrily tossed his coffee cup into the nearby trash can, offering him a sheepish smile. “Sorry, it’s been a bit of a day. Nearly had a row so loud we threw each other through the wall. Got a bit of a temper, that one.”

He made a face of sympathy and leaned back against the bench, nodding his understanding. “I dealt with a boss like that, she was absolutely horrible. I don’t know how  I managed to survive so long without killing her. Do you have a normal method of dealing with her? Any way to like.. curb her temper? Wine? A trip to a spa?”
