Protect Dinosaur Valley — Put Guardrails on Massive Data Centers in Texas

I normally don't like to talk about current events here, but I seriously believe that this needs to be addressed! The Dinosaur Valley State Park in Texas is in huge danger of having an AI data center being build near the park. The byproducts of AI facilities that poisons the air, uses up the water, pushes up electricity, and harmfully impacts the animals, plants, and people living nearby. Even worse, the request to postpone the operation has been denied by Texas courthouses. But, it's not too late yet! If you care so much in preserving the paleontological site, its ecosystem, and to help the people of Glen Rose TX, then please sign the petition in the link up above. Dinosaur Valley State Park is one of the few places where you can walk the same path as the prehistoric animals did millions of years before you, and I'll be seriously devastated if the unethical facility gets build there.

And if anyone sees this post, then I highly encourage you to reblog it so that way more people can learn about what's about to happen near Dinosaur Valley State Park. The more awareness about this petition, the better are in chances to save the dinosaur valley before it's too late. Let's protect this amazing park!

UPDATE: Ever since I've created this post, the petition to save Dinosaur Valley State Park has raised up to at least nearly 7,500 signatures! More and more people are voicing their opposition on putting a data center within Glen Rose Texas. The residents there are totally against on establishing an unethical building that'll not only destroy the fossil trackway and the natural environment, but also be very harmful to their health sake too. I'm blazing this post to give the people of Glen Rose the fighting chance in persevering their amazing park. Losing the trackways will be a travesty, and I'm not about to give up in saving a part of Earth's ancient past. Let's keep that momentum growing!

The Ordovician (485 - 444 million years ago) was charactized by the great radiation of lifeforms originated in the previous Cambrian period. Invertebrates dominated the ecosystem, with enourmous cephalopods and arthropods drifting along the oceans while Trilobites and Gastropods covered the sea floor. Life outside the water was yet not possible. Although it was mostly a warm time, the Ordovician ended in the first mass extinction caused by a glaciation.

Save Endangered Sharks and the Endangered Species Act

Sorry to bring up an another current event related post into my blog again, but this is incredibly important that needs to addressed. For over 50 years, The Endangered Species Act (ESA) has saved 99% approximately 291 species listed. The act has helped recover 46 species and currently protects over 1,600 domestic species. But now, thanks to Donald T**** and his administration, the ESA has gotten dangerously weaken.

The current administration rolls back a key protection for imperiled wildlife with a new federal rule change, announced July 10, 2026, They've narrowed the definition of “harm” under the ESA: a change with the potential for wide ranging impacts on habitat and impacts on endangered and threatened wildlife. These changes would green-light oil and gas drilling, logging, mining and other development in critical wildlife habitat listed live in, even if the animals themselves aren’t directly killed or injured. Impacts that would threaten wildlife include ocean noise, pollution or division of habitat required for the species to survive.

As a person who has a great love for wildlife ever since as long as I can remember, this is something that I will not stand! The ESA not only protects wildlife but also aligns with American values of stewardship and responsibility. Altering it now would dismantle decades of progress and put American interests and biodiversity at risk.

EYE BONES

They are called Scleral rings, and can actually be made of cartilage or bone, but bones are more clickbaity. They can be found in many reptiles, fish, and extinct members of those groups like mosasaurs.

The first question one would ask is what the purpose of the eye bone is. It is theorized to be for keeping the eye stable during pressure changes and high speeds. For example fast swimming fish and birds that fly fast have some of the most prominent scleral rings. Land dwelling reptiles are more likely to lose them over evolutionary time.

Additionally, the rings are more common in animals that don't have round eyes, helping to support the structure (I can do another post about all the funky eye shapes that exist, just know sometimes they are flat or tubular and need extra support)

Finally, the eye bones can provide attachment points for muscles that focus the eye, so you can tell a lot about an animal's lifestyle based on the way the eye was optimized to focus.

Scientists theorize that some dinosaurs were nocturnal because of the thickness of their scleral ring, but I fear that also deserves it's own post.

Fossil Friday: Rise of the Chordates

The Cambrian Explosion is best known for its plethora of invertebrate fauna but did you know that the first chordates and stem-vertebrates also evolved then?

There are three very important fossils from this group: Yunnanozoon, Metaspriggina, and Pikaia.

Yunnanozoon lividium is from the early Cambrian Chengjiang Biota of China. It was a small 2-6cm long animal who's placement has long been debated. As of a 2022 study, consensus is that it is a stem-vertebrate.

Metaspriggina walcotti is from the middle Cambrian Burgess Shale. Another animal whose placement has been debated, the two well-developed eyes and nostrils place it as a basal craniate or vertebrate. Looks a bit surprised to be put squarely in vertebrates, don't you buddy? What if I told you some believe you to be the very first fish?

Finally, we have Pikaia gracilens also of the Burgess Shale. Discovered by Charles Walcott himself in 1911, he was unable to place it because there simply wasn't enough info at the time. In fact, it wasn't until 1989 that anyone recognized it as something other than an annelid worm. Today, its placement is still hotly debated. Some believe it is a basal chordate while others think it is a basal vertebrate.
