You’re ten years old when you see him for the first time.
His small hands grab a piece of freshly baked bread off the kitchen counter. With hurried movements, he scurries away like a squirrel with a handful of fresh nuts. You chase after him, yelling at the gangly boy to stop. When your hand finally grabs onto his tunic, he drops to his knees and begins to beg for his life.
The boy’s eyes widen when you crouch down beside him. You give him a small turkey drumstick, pressing your index to your lips. He snatches it from your grip with a confused awe simmering in his hazel eyes.
You don’t chase after him when he disappears around the corner.
