A genuine smile overtook his face the moment she agreed. He didn’t see this one coming but he does as he promised and follows her lead. the hands of time just aren’t in her favor tonight. it seems as though minutes have taken the role of seconds and they’re rapidly depleting with every syllable exchanged. ❛ OH – come on, marsh. seriously ? what are you – fourteen ? ❜ a slammed door belonging to an overpriced BMW cuts her protesting short. toes arching in a futile attempt to close the gap between their height difference, she hangs an arm around the boy’s neck – a hug that feels much more like a choke hold than anything. tone losing a few octaves, she’ll negotiate with his end of the bargain as her father’s footsteps become more prominent. ❛ fine but only on the cheek. DEAL. ❜

marley is entirely incapable of pinpointing the exact misdemeanor that has landed her in the presence of westfields’s very own drill sergeant but her memory’s not to blame. every visit to principal foster’s office unfolds the same way: she sits in front of his jury desk awaiting her conviction but it always morphs into a spiel about how utterly impressive her grades are and how her ‘rebellious behavior’ just doesn’t reflect them. surely the man means well but his reasoning is faulty. her innards are latticework; intricate and vast but he’ll try to dwindle her down to nothing more than an angst ridden teenager with the insatiable appetite for approval. though his justifications aren’t entirely far fetched, they’re enough to induce a perpetual eye roll. she won’t admit to being a bravado with a pulse just yet. features full of weaponry, her mien takes a scrub brush to the remanence of her defense as the faint vibration of a text message elicits a much softer expression from the girl. dilated spheres flick to the clock on the wall that reads 12:15 – her scheduled and never missed appointment time for her hallway rendezvous with jude. teeth acting as a cage that withholds any sign of compliance, a rehearsed apology manages to seep it’s way out. ❛ i understand. ❜ understand that you’re commander in chief for this town’s army of assholes. ❛ thank you for your time. i’ll head straight to class. ❜ rid her syllables of sincerity and replace them with an extra dose of ridicule, she’ll excuse herself from his office. she’s got an untamed sense of injustice festering within her stomach so it’s no surprise that she has completely disregarded the unread text tucked into her pocket. mumbling a line of unfiltered thoughts, she’ll breeze right passed jude as though he’s nothing more than wall decor.

Jude had been idling in front of the water fountain for what felt like an entire class period before he heard a door swing open. Dropping down, he bent over to look as though he was going to take a sip of water but his peripheral vision caught the sight of the exact person he had been waiting for. Much to his surprise, the girl darted right passed him with no recognition. ❛ Marley, ❜ he calls out in a volume slightly higher than a whisper but it did no good. He raises his voice after looking around for any sign of a teacher. ❛ Marley!! ❜ He tries again but comes up short. Storming after the girl, his converse slap the tile as he catches up to her. His hand loops under her arm and his grip takes ahold of her elbow. ❛ Mar, seriously? What’s the deal? ❜ He pulls her towards his frame, causing her to spin around and face him. It’s not like he hasn’t seen her this way before. He was aware of how the teachers in this school were always on her case but she usually got out of it. Just like the very first time the pair had hung out; if she could get out of trouble with the cops, the administration at their high school was no challenge. But from her fast pace and obvious anger, it didn’t look as though she had gotten away with whatever she had done this time.

The first time that Jude ran into the world wind that was named Marley, they were in these same dull walls. Being high school students they spent most of their weekdays draining their brains for seven hours a day. The two had only two classes together and after becoming closer then they had anticipated, meeting each other in the halls was a hobby that they had been accustomed to. Raising his hand to ask for permission to use the restroom, Jude made his way into the hall only to find that his mid-class break partner was no where to be found. Knowing Marley better than she knew herself, he confidently strolled to the Principals office. That was the key to getting away with things; if you looked like you knew exactly what you were doing, other people would believe you too. It’s when you start looking guilty or on edge that the administration would pull you by the ear. With no questions being asked, Jude was standing in an empty hall. The front desk lady with thick rimmed glasses must’ve been raiding the vending machine in the break room. Walking down the row of doors, he paused before coming to the Principals office. The large wooden door was cracked slightly and by the sounds of the noise coming from inside, he knew Marley was succumbing to defeat. Turning towards the wall, he pulled out his phone and hid it beneath his leather jacket before shooting a text to Marley. Waiting a few seconds, he camouflaged a cough to signal the girl and made his way back towards the water fountaining.
