I remember when I first found out the truth about āSomali piratesā I got chills because of how horrific the truth was and how insanely creepily well the media had twisted the situation. Every single fucking article making it seem like these āpiratesā were justā¦

A group of courageous Colombian women from the rights group, Red Mariposas de Alas Nuevas Construyendo Futuro (known in English as Butterflies for short), are the winners of the prestigious annual Nansen Refugee Award for their selfless work in helping more than 1,000 survivors of forced displacement and sexual abuse. Drawing on modest resources, the women move cautiously on foot, bus or bicycle through the most dangerous neighborhoods, often putting themselves at risk, to help women access medical care and report crimes. The Butterflies provide life skills training and workshops to assist the women in regaining their self-esteem and strength. "Each day they seek to heal the wounds of the women and children of Buenaventura and in doing so put their own lives at risk. Their bravery goes beyond words," said UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres. Read more via UNHCR.
Qian HongyanĀ was just four when she lost both her legs. A speeding trucker left her for dead as she crossed the main road in her village of Zhuangshang in southern China.Ā
For nearly two years Qian was immobile as she didnāt even have enough of her body left to sit up in a wheelchair.Ā Doctors said her only hope of being able to move by herself again would be extensive surgery to allow her to be fitted with prosthetic limbs. Her parents couldnāt afford this treatment.Ā
Qianās granddad Yuan came up with a simple but effective treatment to get her moving again.Ā He took a basketball the village boys had discarded and cut a hole just big enough for tiny Qian to fit into, padded the inside with stiff floor mats from his car, then propped her up inside.Ā All of a sudden Qian was able to stabilize herself and was able to by move herself by rolling the ball in any direction she wanted. She supported herself using wooden handles.Ā
From that day on Qian would not be stopped by any obstacle. She went back to school, started to play with her friends again, and started to get back the life of any girl her age.Ā She began professional swimming training in 2007 and defied the odds of her double amputation to become one of the first members of the Yunnan Youth Swimming Club.
She won three gold medals in last yearās Yunnan Para Games and took a gold and two silver medals at the National Swimming Championship for the Disabled (Under 18) in 2009 before continuing impressively at this yearās Para Games.

I should have added this in the original post butĀ after attention in the Chinese press, Qian traveled to Beijing to receive free artificial limbs at the China Rehabilitation Research Center, a center that has been providing help to the disabled in China for over 20 years. At 18 years old she is ready for her full adult prosthetics.Ā
Inspirational Smart Girl!
here is an image of you perched picturesque upon the back of a dead horse, crying and whipping and pulling the reins; here you are praying for necromancy, well, we are only mortal living things and there is no returning what has been lost but don't you dare think, not for a moment that everything lately has not smelled and seemed and sounded just like you, for the past two weeks, for the next - don't you dare think that I haven't been dreaming of your hands gripped firmly on my wrists and your lips, your lips, your taste, your neck - but there is no making love to corpses, holding on to these fraying ties will soon form our timely nooses, love, there are reasons for my wicked actions and not one of them is near sadistic; have faith in the fact that all this ache was caused by a necessary self preservation, whatever selfish intent that you've seen in my sadness was not malicious, not angry, not senseless, but love can't mend all, it can't mend all hearts, we'll get nowhere on the backs of dead horses.

"There is an old poem by Neruda that Iāve always beenĀ captivated by, and one of the first lines in it has stuck with me ever since the first time i read it. It says "love is so short, forgetting is so long". Itās a line Iāve related to in my saddest moments, when i needed to know someone else had felt the exact same way.ā (RED prologue)
These are some of them, most were golden retrivers and labradors, but also included german shepherds and other breeds. Sadly most are dead now, while many people forget them and donāt spare them a thought.Ā
As people lay dying, trapped and hurt, a team of nearly 100 loyal and courageous search dogs put their lives on the line to help humans. Without them, many more would not have survived, yet few people consider them.Ā
In such a chaotic, terrifying, hot, acrid-smelling, smokey and loud environment, countless human lives depended on their ability to focus, listen, respond to their handlers, and work tirelessly. Stepping over cracked glass, hot tarmac, through flames and thick smoke, being winched over deep ravines, they battled on to seek out survivors and bring them aid.Ā
They worked around the clock, day and night, searching, sniffing, over and over. Not only did they search, but they comforted - many eyewitnesses speak of how the dogs would stop and sit by newly-recovered victims, giving them a sense of hope and relief, before moving on to look for the next. As the situation became desperate, and the rescue workers and fire teams became utterly distraught at the amount of people who were recovered dead, these dogs brought them comfort, sitting with them on breaks, letting them grieve.
Many of these dogs are old, and have passed away. Let us remember the courage and loyalty they showed at such a horrendous event. They didnāt have a choice, but nonetheless they did what was asked of them and helped save countless lives. Donāt let their bravery be forgotten today either, or their determination to be a āgood dogā despite the scary and dangerous environment around them.
FUCKING SOBBING
I love you and you know that but I no longer know what that's worth
āThere are moments which are made up of too much stuff for them to be lived at the time they occur.ā

well. it's hard to accept, it's hard to deal with. everything is overwhelming, and oh so fucking tragic, isn't it? but I guess it's important to remember that I'm allowed to do what's best for me, despite the fact that it may be difficult for someone else. I'm allowed to remove myself from situations that are harmful to me. I'm allowed to do whatever the fuck it is I need to do, to better my own life, because my well being ought to be important to me. it hasn't been, but it should be. I'm important, my needs are important. I don't deserve to be hurt or damaged. I deserve to be happy and safe and appreciated. (wow, that all sounds so clear and simple when written out. but damn, it really isn't)
