can we as a society just generally move away from the idea that it is better to bear with an illness than to take medicine that could help?
We all just have to DO IT, you know? Live. So please hang on, I don’t want to do this alone.
#AmbulatoryWheelchairUsersExist I have heard various ways that people use to determine if someone is faking using a wheelchair; from"if a person using [a mob...
I think this video by @annieelainey is so important. There is so much fear around using mobility aids, especially as someone who is young, ambulatory, and has a larger range of mobility. It is time we change the narrative around what a wheelchair user looks like/is able to do. It has been crafted by ignorance for far too long.
we need to be taught disability history in school because it is 2019, i am 20 years old, and i am only now learning that the National Association of the Deaf had to take Netflix to court in 2012 in order for closed captioning to be required on streaming sites (source). any amount of accessibility in our lives has been fought for, and those stories need to be told.
Person: I don’t really think your symptoms/illness/condition is actually as bad as you say it is…
Me:
Brooklyn nine nine is a great show with great representation but this definitely needed to be said. even the “woke” shows can be offensive and harmful. Everyone needs to keep learning and do better.
anyway with regards to the opioid addiction crisis y'all really need to learn the difference between reliance and addiction, because they’re not the same.
I am reliant on opiate painkillers the same way I am reliant on my epilepsy medication: I take a set amount twice a day in order to function normally. my condition is not curable. physio will not fix it. I do not experience any highs from my painkillers, but I do experience less pain.
this differs vastly to addiction, where the amount you take is not set, may be beyond the safe dose. It will likely cause withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly, as well as harming your body due to the large doses ingested.
this is why it’s terrifying to hear that restrictions are going to be tightened to the extent that it will be almost impossible to get.
that kind of “reform” will only push people -reliant and addicted alike - to get it from non - official sources, where you don’t know what the fuck is in there. it will make actual addicts less safe and reliant people forced to live in agony.
the way to treat this “epidemic” is to invest in addict help schemes, rehab centres, and offer a variety of pain management systems, not this stupid blanket ban style thing that politicians are saying for brownie points.
guess that isn’t as profitable though hm.
“The most important sentence you’ll read in your life: “Not all disabilities are visible.” Repeat that. Say it to someone else. Have them repeat it & pass it on. Awareness is essential.”

When the doctor says all your symptoms are caused by anxiety

Spoonie tip
Before doing anything, ask yourself “ is there an easier way to do this?” ( Or even better delegate it)
Small adjustments like sitting instead of standing whilst doing something make a big difference
You don’t have to do things the way you used to
Don’t let your pride and ego get in the way
It’s time to think differently

Friendly reminder that ableism is something we all have to unlearn. Even if you’re disabled you can still be ableist. Ableism is something that is drilled into us from a young age. It deeply embedded into our culture and we all need to be aware of it and try harder to avoid it.
Just because you’re young doesn’t mean you can’t have physical problems.
Just because you’re young doesn’t mean you can’t be disabled.
Just because you’re young doesn’t mean you can’t be chronically ill.
It’s not your fault that some people don’t understand, even if these people are close to you, like family or friends.
Start answering people’s invasive questions with “does it matter?”
Watch them explode lmao
🤔:“Is that your hair?”
😏:”Does it matter?”
Okay but true facts, this can make a profound impact. When I was younger, I had a friend who is trans and my mom once asked what his birth name was, and I asked, “Why does it matter?” She paused and answered something to the effect of, “You’re right, it doesn’t.”
Been doing this for a few years now. Have often been labeled as “rude” because of it, but we don’t owe anyone more information than we want to give them. Ever.
