I think Gabrielle/a's overperforming femininity on purpose. The bond and push up bra is a choice, she was extremely distant in her texts and asked Lestat what his expectations are.

Lestat disrespecting Rus's pronouns in the same episode Gabrielle seemingly reluctantly shows up is noteworthy. I was actually giving up on gender nonconformity being explored with Gabrielle/a but this episode actually made me wonder it might be happening. She says "expectations?"

Their kiss mirrors loustat's kiss in S1E1. A kiss based on a series of miscommunication and misunderstandings which culminated in their conflict. Lestat didn't understand Louis's actual problems. Lestat doesn't understand Gabrielle, and vice versa.

Honestly? Lestat misgendering the nonbinary vampire makes me more hopeful that we may get some transmasc Gabrielle/a.

I’ve been a little bummed with her styling + a lot of ppl reviewing the show calling her femme, but I’m now wondering if we’re going to get it revealed down the line that a lot of that is Lestat’s narration, and also of course, driven by her relationship with him.

We’ve already got an inversion of the marketing’s expectations with “how great the music is going to be” vs characters in the show acknowledging that the music sucks.

I can’t imagine that that part of her character is going to get completely erased, and the inclusion of that choice for Lestat to misgender an AFAB transmasculine character seems really intentional in that relationship to me.

Another Disclaimer: I do not blame Goose herself for this at all. We have no idea what writing decisions were allowed for theatre viewing, how heavily Glitch or other entities were involved in the writing room. This isn’t a condemnation of the amazing writers who was able to make an indie animation in theatres possible.

That being said….

During a time where American transgender rights are being gutted. During PRIDE MONTH-

IMPLICATION IS NOT REPRESENTATION.

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts stating that Jax is now canonically transfem. This is just simply not true. If Goose was a cis author, we would not be hesitating to call this queerbait. But I’ll call it more subtextual than bait.

See, the implication was so strong that if you knew what you’re looking for, you definitely could read into it as transfemme coding. But here’s the thing: If you ARENT looking for that, you can easily disregard it.

Jax is not trans in canon if you don’t headcanon him as such. Hes not even an egg in canon if you don’t read into it. And I think the lack of explicitly is a major problem with the lack of trans characters in media.

As a trans person myself, I’m very disappointed that we didn’t get the chance to have a canonical trans character. It was almost like they were too scared to fully commit to it and it just speaks to our lack of representation all around. It would have been nice to have canonical rep for an asshole egg because that just isn’t a character often depicted.

And it just speaks to how “unmarketable” our existence really is. Which I thought maybe we could have avoided from an indie production but I guess not…

One of the reasons why I love Re-Animator so much (and why it’s so queer) is because of how genre-bending it is!

We get introduced to our protagonist, Daniel, who is your pretty typical heroic figure. He’s extremely smart (in med school), conventionally attractive, heterosexual & traditionally masculine, and his main character flaw is that he cares TOO MUCH about his patients to the point where having them die on him is challenging for him.

Then, we enter Herbert. He’s got all the markings of a queer-coded villain. Not traditionally masculine, anti-social from the jump, with extremely suspicious circumstances of why he’s in Arkham in the first place. He inserts himself into the narrative & Dan’s life by becoming his roommate when Dan doesn’t know about his experiments.

In a lot of media, this would be the setup— Dan would find out about Herbert’s experiments, find them morally wrong/maybe listen to his girlfriend, and work to stop Herbert. But Nope!! We come to find out Dan caring too much abt his patients runs far deeper than we previously thought- to the point where he’s willing to join in on Herbert’s reanimation experiments and commit like 15 felonies with him.
