Apologies to my mutuals for more odyssey posting but why the fuck are ppl saying Nolan removed the gods. Like that straight up did not happen?????

Okay let me clarify. obviously we only see one human manifestation of the gods (and we also don't know if she's the actual way athena looks). but you cannot watch that movie and tell me that there are no gods in it. Like repeatedly we are told "hey the gods are saying/doing x" and then X happens. Or how the only way he ends up getting home is by surrendering to the future zeus wants for him. the central concept of the film is "you must treat your guests well bc they might be gods in disguise and you'll be punished" and then that literally happens. they kill a woman who athena took the form of and then he never gets home. and yes that is also a metaphor for PTSD, but the gods are ways of explaining things that could not be explained to begin with.

the odyssey is interesting because it’s such a batshit old text and so foreign to us that we kinda have to build little rafts of meaning to anchor ourselves to it - and so that means we are never fully satisfied with any new iteration of it because it’s not OUR odyssey. classic majors will grumble because the circular narrative isn’t there. epic fans are looking for their anime wifeguy in it and he’s not there so they don’t like it. people who remember mostly the nobody scene as The Thematic Gateway of the text complain online. my girlfriend wanted the parallel between polyphemus and odysseus during the massacre of the suitors to be starker. I wanted to see the slaves hanged because to me, that’s a fascinating and disjointed horrific moment that I keep coming back to when I think of this epic. like we can never be satisfied really because this isn’t a book, this is a story in wet clay, the shape of it is ever changing and our fleeting understanding of it can never be stable or shared. it’s kinda awesome

the question of accuracy when adapting the Homeric epics is fundamentally unanswerable in a way that will satisfy classicists who post about it because the epics themselves are not historically or culturally accurate to the time in which they’re set and this is a relevant factor to consider when discussing adaptation as a process, in this essay I will -

I do find the idea that “there's no hubris in Nolan's Odyssey” laughable. It’s right there! The hubris is the core of the film- that you can break the laws of gods and not be punished. Odysseus commits a heinous act, fundamentally breaks a core concept of their society, and thinks he can be allowed to go home. He thinks he can take what he wants and not be taken from. Like babes you broke something fundamental in a world where gods are real, even if he'd prefer they not be. The same core themes are there, even if they are explored somewhat differently. which is what makes an adaptation.

Like you can say he emphasized specific themes that are relevant to American life more than ancient Greek life, but this is a movie made by a British man living California in 2026. It is an adaptation and necessarily must reflect even by accident some part of the culture it was made in and I think it does it beautifully.
