it's so fucking offensive that people consider western queer media somehow above asian queer media, but it's also so annoying that the argument is often that asian queer media is not realistic because it does not depict "the struggle". first of all, because that is not even true - a sizeable percentage of asian queer media does depict plenty of different struggles relevant to the particular country's culture and issues. but, second of all, because both the struggle that is being referred to by the "critics" and the way it is typically depicted in western queer media is often just completely irrelevant and unrelatable outside of the west.

and then, beyond all of that, why do people even demand for all queer content to depict struggle in the first place? why must queer content always be realistic to be good? do you people watch straight romcoms and go "oh, well this meet cute is unrealistic"? do you watch a straight romantic drama and go "oh, well that's not how relationships work"? no? of course not. many straight relationships on screen are unrealistic and, depending on the genre, even idealistic, and no one bats an eye. but queer characters must suffer or it's "not real" and therefore "shallow and bad". like, fuck you, actually.
