Okay i'm making another Backrooms post because I literally CANNOT stop thinking about this movie and all the symbolism it has. I was especially thinking about Clark's costume choice. In the theater, my best friend and I were making the joke that if they chose any shirt color for Clark other than purple that it would be a real eyesore, but that really got me thinking.
Feel free to correct or add anything!! I'm like 95% sure i'm being delusional and i've only seen the movie once so i'm sure there's something I'm missing lol.
At the very beginning when we first see Clark phase through and go into the backrooms, he's wearing his normal purple button down shirt. I believe purple was chosen because it's the opposite of the backrooms' yellow and helps him stand out, along with symbolizing his old life/ reality.
But there's also a little bit of white sticking out under his shirt collar, which I think could symbolize the sterile, empty nature of the backrooms. Although he's still focused on his life in the real world, a little bit of that curiosity is peeking through. The "tip of the iceberg", if it were.
Then in this scene when he tells Mary he's been exploring and mapping out the backrooms for a few days, he's wearing an open purple jacket and (i think) a light blue shirt underneath.
Blue's still a cool color and oriented toward purple, but it's a light blue, which is leaning toward white. His jacket is completely open, exposing most of his light colored shirt. At this point, he's getting deep into his research and wants to understand what the backrooms is, even if he sounds crazy and verbally lashes out at his therapist. He's getting deep into it but there's still time to button up his purple jacket and return to the real world.
Finally, in the dinner scene, he's wearing an open purple flannel, a fully white tank top, and (again, I believe lol) jeans.
He has completely assimilated into the backrooms and wants to stay there, believing it's where he belongs. His flannel jacket isn't solid purple like the other two, it's mottled with different colors, representing his skewed perception of reality. His solid white tank top represents his new reality's hold on him. It's also interesting to note that up until this point (except for his pajamas) he's always been dressed semi-professionally, with button downs and slacks. In this scene, he's wearing much more relaxed attire, almost like an outfit you would wear around the house. I think this is trying to symbolize that Clark doesn't see the backrooms as a place to escape, but as a new *home*. Even in the role play at dinner with Mary, he's protective of his new "home" and even refers to it as "the house he pays for" and resents his wife (or Mary) for kicking him out (trying to get him to leave the backrooms with her). He's acting like the man of the house with his own perfect family he couldn't have with Barbara.
But that's just my theorist brain going crazy and connecting a bunch of random stuff lol. I'm a sucker for good costume design. I might be delusional but hey it's Kane Pixels so who knows. As I said feel free to tell me anything I missed!! It's good kindling for fan theories lol
