it’s part and parcel for the staunchest of neoliberals to earnestly—and unknowingly—engage with anti-imperialist sentiment when it is presented in the form of an allegorical franchise like star wars or harry potter. it is only when they are asked to actually think about the merits of a real life (albeit flawed) revolutionary movement fighting against a corrupt, dictatorial regime that they immediately resort to employing the same rhetoric that the fictional imperialist villain uses against the beloved protagonist(s). the real life freedom fighters are terrorists, and it is the real life state that is infallible, not the other way around (as it is in their favorite franchise). they hop back and forth between this invisible ideological line, oblivious to the fact that they are, at the very least on some subconscious level, partial to the politics they see as a threat to human civilization. this phenomenon is something academics refer to as “recuperation”. the franchise in question takes anticapitalist ideas and repackages them in such a way that it allows the average person with similarly average political beliefs to watch it and have an “outlet” for their dissatisfaction with capitalism—effectively dampening what could’ve been the start of their radicalization.
