Grimes, who at some point will have to be referred to as “c” if she follows through with her plans to kill off that chapter of her career, has been in the news a whole lot this past year. There’s a lot that can be digested and discussed, but let’s not get into all that now. Suffice to say, artists are humans who evolve, change, and go through different phases in life, just like us. And they just might look back at some of their work and realize they are in a very different place now. Whatever happens, we will love her prior work forevermore, even if she decides to close the door behind her. Instead, let’s listen to another surprise one-off from the Canadian musician, a secret song of sorts that she quietly hid on Soundcloud before someone was able to sleuth their way through and find it. принцесса, Russian for princess, is an ethereal swirling, nebulous whorling ambient electronic song that harkens back to some of Grimes’ earlier work. Since she has new official music in the works, I’m guessing the secret route was so that people wouldn’t jump the gun and make a huge big deal out of принцесса as a new Grimes song. She uploaded the track under the name Dark. Perhaps the name is somehow related to her last demo, Pretty Dark, or perhaps they aren’t related at all. Regardless, we’re glad someone found the song, because it’s such a soothing treat, and we love hearing her celestial voice winding through its surreal and misty production.
