How old is Jean Morin? Dorothee refers to him as a little kid in her diary, but talks about wanting to have employed him in that same diary. Was she seriously about to use child labour?! (TT__TT)
Jean Morin is Dorothee's younger brother, hence why she treats him like a little kid despite literally going on a "world tour for academic research".
At the time Dorothee's Diary was written, he was meant to finish his studies and come to Whale Island with Dorothee, which means he would have been around 17~18 years old. And since Dorothee only just recently moved and opened up her store (as written in her diary on the first few pages), it can be assumed he is still 18 (or around 21 if we're counting the chinese release date instead of the global version)
Also this 100% means Dorothee is above the age of 18. If anyone wanted to know.

Realm
The term āRealmā refers to all existence within a certain scope of the universe ā organic or inorganic, living or non-living. Because there is a beginning and change, there is time; because there are coordinates, there is space. When describing an existence that lies beyond known definitions of time or coordinate ranges, it is considered not part of āthis Realm.ā Besides all known ānatives,ā there also exist beings from the āouter Realmā. It is unknown how higher-dimensional āRealmsā might name our own, the phrases āwithin our worldā below will be referred to simply as āOurworldā or āthis realm.ā The oceans, the land, the sky, inside and outside the Spirit Realm, and all geographies and cultures mentioned in the eras of Solar, Eclipse, and Star ā all belong to Ourworld. The Chaos Cosmos is the highest known existence, encompassing Ourworld. The Galaxy, Beyond the Galaxy, and the Origin also reside within the Chaos Cosmos, yet their coordinates remain undefined. Naturally, they do not belong to Ourworld ā they are existances of a higher order. Between Realms stand firm barriers. To open and sustain a passage connecting two Realms requires immensely powerful Psionic Power ā a feat beyond the reach of ordinary beings in Ourworld.
Chaos, Galaxy, Origin, and āSpiritā
A first glance into Chaos ā the world originated from it. In the beginning, heaven and earth were joined, that is, in a chaotic state, until a ādeityā parted them. Chaos is the nebulous state before the cosmos took form, when qi, form, and substance were fused and undivided. Yet within the world-concept, Chaos exists from the very beginning. Ourworld took shape within the Chaos Cosmos as energies gathered. And before Ourworld formed, a vague āGalaxyā already existed within Chaos. Simply put, the Galaxy can also be understood as a Realm ā an elder Realm, the central Realm of the Chaos Cosmos. The energy scattered throughout the Chaos Cosmos originally emanated from the Galaxy, and the source of the Galaxyās energy lies in the āOriginā located on Beyond the Galaxy ā the place where all things began. The Galaxy, Beyond the Galaxy, and the Origin do not exist within concepts known to people and cannot be found. The power of the Origin is beyond comprehension. Energy can give rise to spirit bodies. These spirits bodies maintain a connection to their source ā the Galaxy ā though it is not a strong one, somewhat like the bond between ancestors and their distant descendants. When a spirit body returns to the Galaxy, it becomes a āDistant Starā capable of drawing upon the energy of the Origin. After Ourworld formed, the energy within it ā through its own action or interaction ā generated spirit bodies akin to starlight, as well as matter. Over time, the spirit bodies in Ourworld developed consciousness and, driven by an instinct for existence and growth, became deeply intertwined with matter. Thus, the sky and earth took shape.
Spirit and Psionic Power
Spirit, or āSpirit Bodyā refers to a conscious, autonomous ābeingā formed through the convergence of energy. Spirit bodies sustain their existence through their source energy. As long as this energy remains undispersed, they do not fade away. When the energy diminishes or is excessively depleted, a spirit body falls into slumber. A slumbering spirit requires replenishment; without sufficient energy, it cannot awaken. Simply put, itās akin to a vegetative state. Spirit bodies can channel their own energy and manifest it through changes in the material world. Thus, powerful spirit bodies can achieve feats beyond the reach of ordinary beings ā including those of high intelligence. Whether matter exists does not directly determine a spirit bodyās life or death. However, within the same Realm, the state of matter usually affects the potency of a spirit bodyās energy ā perhaps because the genesis of matter and a spiritās origin are inseparably linked. Due to their mutual dependence with matter, spirit bodies, as ābeingsā, gradually developed āpersonalities.ā Even if they initially lacked āemotions,ā prolonged influence from matter (and the beings that rely on matter to live) led spiritbodies to manifest distinct traits. Psionic Power refers to the energy of a spirit body, often called āSpirit Bodyās Power.ā It is energy that a spirit body emits, whether actively or passively, and to some extent, can be utilised by other intelligent beings. However, the range of a spirit bodyās influence is limited ā even as one as powerful as the Origin. The study and application of Psionic Power to solve practical problems, leading to solve practical problems leading to the development of functional technologies powered by it, is known as āPsionic Power tech.ā Additionally, the often-mentioned āAstralisā in legends seems to blend the concepts of āDistant Starā and āSpiritā ā a popular but imprecise term. More likely, āAstralisā is merely one type of spirit bodies in Ourworld, or one of the Guardian Spirits of the entire Realm.
Life
Life is sustained by energy. The essence of life lies in metabolism. Simply put: heredity and variation. Anything that exhibits even one of these traits is regarded as life. Some beings exist whole āimmortalityā is sustained by energy surplus or cyclical regeneration. Because they are āimmortalā, they have no need for āheredity.ā Yet since energy is in constant flow, even these āimmortalā beings undergo āvariation.ā There also exist beings that ādieā when their energy is depleted. As for whether āSpiritsā and āDistant Starsā count as living beings, theoretically, by definition, they do. For an independent āSpirit,ā its energy is in a constant state of active change. The same applies to Distant Stars. However, the āOriginā within the Galaxy does not count, as its energy appears unchanging ā any altercation is merely passive, such as being ātaken awayā or āportioned outā. Yet even this view remains debated within the Psionic Academy.
Just how old is Marin? She says she's way older than she looks and she already looks like an elderly person, so it makes one wonder.
Okay heads up I'm still like, half asleep so this answer might be really badly worded but like,
For one, she's literally immortal, but she got gifted / blessed with it during her travels so it's not like she was born immortal. Secondly, I forgot where but she once said that she's old enough to be Annie's grandma, so uh. If I had to guess? Probably like, 80~120 but it's not confirmed or anything. She's just really old but can live forever
Where does it say that the current year is Star 120? I checked the user-published books at the bookstall and it showed a regular MM/DD/YYYY publish date.

When considering the theory that Vanya cannot fish, I found myself wondering how he obtains his achievements that require fishing.
Is there a reasonable explanation for this?

Well, some people, such as I, have theorised that Vanya gained his fishing achievements before getting cursed. Considering some of his titles and badges on his ID card (or whatever it's called) such as "World's Best Angler" and "Angling Prodigy", he might have gotten those titles from before he was unable to fish. Moreover, he has the "Never Empty-Handed" badge that requires one to fish until Fishing Level 10, so uh. He probably fished a lot before being literally unable to.
Others speculate that his title was given to him from his contributions in the study of angling! Vanya wrote a paper titled "Theoretical Studies in Angling" and invented the mermaid lures, which could probably lead him to becoming a fishing mentor through his merit and studies, rather than actually having done it. I... personally do not subscribe to this theory, but I think it does contribute to some of his other badges, such as "Shoal's Blessing" (He could have gone to many shoals long after his curse for research) and "Mystic Fisher" (More research -> More fishing event hidden phases)
What if the hypothetical sun god cursed Alu to not speak at all, but a moon god weakened the curse, letting Alu speak when struck by moonlight?
Interesting theory! There's not really anything to back it up right now, though, so if I find anything that proves or refutes this I'll make a follow-up to this post~
Also, do note, Li Zhen theorised about the whole Sun God thing, so it's not confirmed at all. Heck, it might not even be the actual situation at all, so um, grain of salt here.
What are the Grimkin and what is the the Grimkin Realm? They were mentioned in the winter fashionwave mail and quests, but I haven't seen them mentioned much beyond that.
Okay SO!!! I went down a rabbithole about this before the actual Fashionwave event even STARTED mentioning about it. TDLR: It's some sort of halloween monster thing. More info below, but in dot points because why not:
Grimkin- wait. Hold the breaks for just a second. I just did some googling for this ask, and WHY is there an OST track for Heartopia titled "Decent of the Grimkin Night"???? Okay just listened to it, it's actually pretty decent, I'd prefer it if it were more halloween-ish tho. It's too piano-whimsical for the genre.
In the description of pansies, Annie comments that they're "known as 'Johnny-Jump-Up's, due to their colorful bloom that looks like a funny little face", before remarking "Wait... who's 'Johnny'? Is that a Grimkin name?". So like, they're probably funny little elves
Bill, a notorious (to me) exaggerated storyteller and lier, says you shouldn't be scared of the 'snow grimkins' (before they're revealed to be penguins) as he's "[sent] [his] regards to [his] Grimkin buddies". This is most likely as real as your parents telling you they just called Santa, of which I mean it's obviously a lie. I don't like Bill if you couldn't tell.
Captian (the pink one) says that if you get infected with Frostspore, you "turn as pale as petrified Grimkins, with their tongues hanging like a Long-Tongue Grimkin". So um. Like worse elves, I guess. Imagine a small white elf with a long tongue, probably.
Ka Ching states the 'Snow Grimkin' event was "just like a Grimkin night, going door to door, playing harmless pranks, and boldly demanding some candy". This is corroborated with the Fashion Reporter's comments on "Trick-or-treating during Grimkin Night". So um. That's just halloween. White halloween elves with long tongues so far.
Andrew (Leader of the Beard club) says they come "creeping in from the Grimkin Realm". White halloween elves with long tongues from, idk, halloween town.
Massimo claims Captian told him Long Tongue Grimkin can possess people to search for food. This means nothing to me.
In Mrs Joan's tale about The Collector in Town Chronicles 1, eugh i hate his long name, Epaphroditos knows he's dreaming because he's found "floating like a Grimkin over his exhibition hall".
And that's every instance of the Grimkin! They're ultimately just white halloween elves with long tongues from halloween town that can float??? And they're most likely just a myth during the Halloween season to scare kids, if you ask me. Which you have.

thank you for existing. as someone who has decided to write fanfics for the book stall, yours and everyone elseās efforts are lifesaversāi almost wrote vanya catching fish! as an aside: ive been wondering if/headcanoning vanya is a polar bear. im a newer player who has only ever seen him in his winter outfit/ushanka, which i thought was his only fit, and i was basing the idea off of the motifsā¦ so when i saw a pic with his visor and saw he really does have bear ears, my mind was kind of blown!
OMG THANK YOU????? No yeah, the game loves to poke fun at Vanya's inability to fish all the time lol. Back to the rest of your ask:
I would think Vanya has lots of connections to that of a polar bear, even besides the ears. For instance, he prefers the cold of the winter season (his title on his card can read "Winter Lover" sometimes), even claiming that "18Ā°C [is] too hot to sleep" (That's 64Ā°F for you Americans). I don't know about you, but I'd rather sleep in 30Ā°C than in anything colder than 18Ā°C, so uh yeah. My guy likes the cold.
But even more than that... during the winter event, Vanya can talk about how animals stay warm during the cold back in his homeland. Importantly, he states the following: "Some grow thicker, waterproof fur, and others dig homes underground. Oh, and packing on some extra fat ahead of time works wonders too" - All of which polar bears use to stay warm in the artic.
Funnily enough, when getting to the topic of penguins, "What about penguins? Uh, penguins... we're not really that close." which would make sense because polar bears eat penguins. Of course they wouldn't be close!
If the Astralis wants the residents of Whale Island to remain in blissful ignorance, than why do meteor showers only happen on Onsen Mountain and in the Fishing Village, both are places where deep lore info can be found. Would it be possible that it isn't the Astralis, who punishes people for seeking knowledge, but someone else is?
I uh. Forgot to answer this, but: yeah I don't think it's Astralis either. Astralis seems more committed to helping people and moving them to Whale Island, Whaltune seems to be kinda dormant with few recent mentions, so I have no idea who either. Li Zhen comments on Silesia's curse, theorising that perhaps some sort of "sun god" cursed him, but little else is mentioned on who can ACTUALLY curse people. Speaking of: I'm gonna make a quick list on all curses I can think off in Heartopia:
Silesia von Jasper Friedrich: Unable to speak during the day (Hence the Alu Alu talk). Possibly cursed by a sun god
Ivan "Vanya" Ivanoic Lure + Lure Family: Unable to fish, or more accurately, unable to REEL in fish. Likely cursed from his family being the top anglers and boasting about it
Marin: Immortality. Gained "this face time can no longer touch" during her travels on The Wind Piercer as a blessing, though time has still taken a toll on her soul. Technically classified as life "sustained by energy surplus or cyclical regeneration"
Not a curse but Atara jokes that he'll cast a curse on us for an hour (corrected to half an hour) if we're being a meanie (I don't remember the wording)
Not exactly a curse but nobody has any desire to leave Whale Island for some reason
Also, I dunno if the metor showers being in lore related locations work as strong evidence, because it's plausable it could change locations for gameplay reasons.

Hello! i'm here to share you another lore piece that I find interesting~
Right now, i'm trying to make sense of what Alu/Silesia meant when he called Vanya as "A willing bite hooks itself", which is a bit funny because there was a chance where that title was put into Vanya's ID card:
Compared to the one in the dialogue:
It seems that they changed the title into "Only The Willing Take The Bait"
It's interesting if you connect it with what we had found so far, which is the fishing line snapping and the "curse" thing...
This might sound very very far-fetched and stupid(?), but what I could get from that is: no fish are willing to bite his hooks that he needed to create tools to "force" them to bite the hooks
BUT, like what we knew, he said that he didn't want to use the tools himself which was why he asked us to try them ourselves... perhaps he was quite aware of what the title meant so he hesitated(?) and decided to not rely on the tools to prove himself of his own skills
I think the reason why the fish aren't "willing" to bite his hooks has something to do with the "curse", which is ironic because either way he wouldn't even be able to get one with how he always seem to break his fishing lines/rods
It's hard for me to explain it but I suppose that's what I could summarize from what I could get. I'm also aware that the title might refer to Vanya instead (him being the "willing") but it's still difficult to make a connection with that perspective for now
Oh also, that could also mean that Vanya had met Alu/Silesia at night for him to be told about the title... perhaps they even had exchanged stories of their own "curses" at that time

Ok so, firstly, i couldnāt find that exact Vanya ID card when i checked him, so I have no idea how that gets āunlockedā or if itās photoshopped (Not doubting you, just donāt know how to verify it for theory purposes).
However, i do find that piece of dialogue interesting! While i donāt personally agree with your theory being in a literal sense, itād be rather intriguing to have Vanya force the fish to come toward him despite his curse. Iām more in favor of Vanya being the willing one here, as you mentioned.
Ok so, out of the way, this is entirely theory work, but hereās what i think: The āperson from the southā is most likely Li Zhen, since the phrase used matches other more philosophical quotes sheās said from others. Li Zhen has also seen Alu, who used to be a close friend, become cursed from his thirst of knowledge he was never meant to know. This is why i speculate Li Zhen was simply warning Vanya not to get too into research about either his curse or going around his curse the same way Alu turned to discovering about the world, since sheās seen what could happen and how easy it is to fall into. But itās kind of a far stretch so likeeeeee donāt quote me on this lol
I would love to see Alu interacting with other characters though, feels weird for only Li Zhen (and Naughty in Aluās Treasure gossip i havenāt unlocked yet) to know and talk about him.
Okay, so, followup, between this post and now, I realised that the NPC's cards can change, and can confirm, it does say this. I do not know if the corrosponding dialogue is avaiable outside when the card says this, but like, I think that may be the case.
